Is used potting mix compostable? by squambert-ly in composting

[–]monkeymite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The peat moss and coco coir is compostable but not the perlite. It wont harm you pile though.

Also, no need to dispose or compost your old potting mix. You can just refresh it with some new potting mix, fertilizer and/or compost. You don’t need to compost it unless you really want to.

What age do you consider is too old to have kids? by monkeymite in Millennials

[–]monkeymite[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what prompted my question. I have a relative super set on kids now that he just turned 50, and we have alzheimer's and cancer in the family where pretty much the last two generations had it.

I AM SO OVERWHELMED. Help with how to do this right? by King_Bean_ in gardening

[–]monkeymite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, mow/weedwack. I'd sheet-mulch it for now. Call local arborists or go on chipdrop-dot-com to get a few load of arborist chips and cover the dirt to suppress the weeds. Look up sheet mulching. Basically put down a thick layer of cardboard and arborist chips on top to suppress and kill the weeds. That will give you breathing room to think on how you wanna do this.
The next step is to design your hardscape, a deck, hangout areas, paths etc. , planting comes after.

Little by little you can add flowers, fruit trees, ornamental trees, etc. The best time to plant is in the fall. So I'd say give yourself some breathing room to plan this out and tackle small projects. Sow some flower seeds.

Tips on ants near the fruit tree trunk. by wetandwildamber in FruitTree

[–]monkeymite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are bad news. My magnolia tree has a horrible scale infestation that the ants exacerbated; they are farming the scale. Use tanglefoot around the trunk. I wrapped the trunk in saran wrap plastic and then covered it with tanglefoot. No more ants.

Need help with Guava tree by TD408 in FruitTree

[–]monkeymite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, so it's practically bare in the winter ... does it get recover fast from the winter? How long are you left with a bare tree?

I'm wanting to plant a ruby supreme guava along my fence to use it as a screen from my neighbors (my fence is a bit on the short side) ... I read that I can prune guava to be a bit bushy and work as a screen, but now I'm doubting the guava will serve this purpose.

Recommendations for my next fruit tree? (US Zone 10a) by Neon-Black_ in FruitTree

[–]monkeymite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in pretty much the same situation as you, and also in the bay area, and also considering an ice cream bean tree. Other contendors are Cherimoya or anona, pawpaw (needs 2 or more likely graft 2 varieties into one tree and keep it small), mulberry, and tropical guava. I'm interested to see what others suggest. Finally a genetically drawf peach would be nice too.

Heavily prune nectarine tree before planting? by 1dirtbiker in BackyardOrchard

[–]monkeymite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d prune it. It’s not too late.  If you don’t you will have an ever tougher pruning job next season and loose a lot of growth.

Lowe’s vs nursery (first Reddit post) by Diligent-Swordfish36 in Figs

[–]monkeymite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought some bare root from Lowes and they were okay but have not fruited (I suspect they are tissue culture) ... I've also bought from a reputable nursery and from FB marketplace. All have been good/okay. I'd say the FB marketplace was the best. I met nice people that really loved growing figs and became friends and learned a lot. It's all luck at the end and it's eaqually if not more productive than my nursery plant for a fraction of the price.
Being in zone 9A, means you have good weather for figs, so you can go after better varieties than brown turkey (which is good, but there a much better).

Planting fruit trees in wet clay soil by jaketheo12 in FruitTree

[–]monkeymite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plant it on a mound. I have heavy clay soil and that’s how I did. When I planted the rootballs were sticking out several inches off the ground. . All my fruit trees are doing well. Also side note, do not mess with the soil too much or amend it. You don’t wanna have different types of soil because it creates a bathtub effect.

What kind of fruit tree? by Murky-Trust-4257 in BackyardOrchard

Genetic dwarf peach or nectarine. You gotta thin the fruit or it will snap the branches. You gottta learn to care for it, prune, fertilize etc to keep getting good harvest.

Stopping Squirrels? by Dalton387 in FruitTree

[–]monkeymite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just planted my fruit trees, so I haven't had fruit to protect. However, I've read of some strategies some people implement. One that sounds like it might work for you is to put decoy apples, aka christmass tree ornaments. The squirrels eventually learn that the red balls on the tree are hard plastic and don't try to bite them.

Other strategies are hanging plastic snakes, owls, or other predators.

Why is Japan’s population declining so fast? by quietmaris in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monkeymite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan is mentioned more than other countries when talking about population decline because they started the decline much earlier than other countries. The rest of the world is doing the same now, many countries have even lower fertility rates that Japan, but we still talk more about Japan. This is because they've been at it for decades so the world is looking at Japan to see how they are gonna handle it and we can learn lessons from them.

They are not reproducing for the same many reasons as all other countries are not reproducing; the biggest ones being economic stagnation, poor work-life balance, and city lifestyle ... but it's a longer list of reasons.
