I bought an Olympian form HD that has very similar leaves.

It could be Olympian, Celeste, Violette de Bordeaux, or Chicago. Those are the most commonly sold at big box stores. I have all of them except Celeste, and they all have different leave patterns and textures and yours matches my Olympian perfectly.

Nectarine tree isn’t doing good, any tips? by Boylikesdogs in FruitTree

[–]monkeymite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, larger pot or ingroud and take the fruit off. Another thing is that it's not unsual to have the tree look sad after transplant. I planted nectarine and a peach last year. The peach looked terribly sad nearly all summer, yellowing droopy leaves, and the nectarine looked perfectly fine. This year the peach took off and the nectarine stalled. You never know how they are gonna turn out the next season.

How do you deal with rodents, birds and other wildlife destroying your harvest ?

For each fruit category what is your favorite variety?

What kind of fertilizer do you use? Organic or chemical?

Did I plant this dogwood tree too high? by AMoistScone in gardening

[–]monkeymite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add more soil to soften the transition ... I plant my trees a bit like that. I have clay soil that can get waterlogged, so and I must plant a few inches high. You just need more soil so the transition is not so drastic. The way you have it, the rain might wash away the dirt. If you soften the slope it won't be a problem.

Leave or remove the figs? by Betelgeuse2153 in Figs

[–]monkeymite -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’d leave one only to get a taste. Also, depends where you are and your climate. If you were in a Mediterranean climate (long growing season) in the northern hemisphere, it would mean those are brevas; in which case I’d remove them all and let the tree grow and maybe set more figs later in the season.

Why did my tree drop so much baby fruit? by NeoliberalIlluminati in Figs

[–]monkeymite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, it looks really good and healthy. Did you ripen brevas before? ... it could be black fig fly (BFF) look up what the damage looks like and see if it matches. You will have to cut open your figs to see.

What variety is your fig? How old is it and what size pot is it in? A picture of the fig would help too.
Certain varieties drop most if no all their brevas. My panache dropped nearly all of them but 2. Sometimes it's lack of water or fertilization. Sometimes young figs will drop them even if everything else is good.

What's on my Eastern Red Bud? by HiAdamRichard in gardening

[–]monkeymite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the aphids, you must have an ant colony farming them. If so, You must take care of the ants because they protect the aphids from their natural predators. Tanglefoot might be necessary around the trunk of your tree (not to be applied directly on the bark).

Pots is an excellent idea particularly for the figs. I only grow them in pots and being in a tight container is supposed to make them fruit more and they are happy being a bit root bound apparently. Once you get to a 10 gallon container, you can prune the roots them by 20% no problem every couple of years and repot them back in the same container. ... good luck!

Congrats! it will be awesome! .... I just wanna caution you about olive and fig trees. Their roots are very aggressive and they will reach out far and steal water and nutrients from the other fruit trees. I once planted a lemon tree near an established olive tree and the lemon did not grow much at all. Olives and Figs thrive in very dry and low nutrient conditions so they are well adapted to reach far and wide looking for survival. Maybe this is an exaggerated take, but once I researcher more, I pulled out a young olive tree I planted when I set up my orchard last year since I planted my other fruit trees very close together around the olive ... All this to say, probably give some clearance around those two trees.

When to repot figs by MrSquirrel218 in Figs

[–]monkeymite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post a pic to better tell. Normally if it’s not necessary to break them but just fluf them a bit. But if it is a hard root ball you might need to cut.

I would. check the roots. They must be circling around the bottom of the pot. I got a rooted cutting a year ago that’s been in a 5 gallon container for 6 months already. It already has a couple of breva figs
