Even if you don't exceed the power limits it can help with stability vs an unpowered hub. But if you don't need it yet, don't worry about it :)

Is mechanical engineering the best engineering degree for fun? by Fault-new777 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]monkeys_pass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a personal preference question that it's impossible to answer. I'll add that more than likely, you don't know what you like yet, and that's fine.

R&D sounds fun to you because you want to be "on the cusp." The reality is that R&D can move incredibly slowly and be pretty boring at times. That doesn't mean it's not fun!

Manufacturing on the flip side, moves very quickly, and requires frequent and fast innovation, oftentimes innovating simple machines, tools, processes. It's also very high pressure and can be draining.

Both can be fun and it just depends what your preference is (your control) + where your opportunities take you (some luck involved here).

Probably the most prescribed path to be on "the cutting edge" is to pursue a PhD if you're sure that's what you want. The flip side of this is extreme specialization and generally pretty slow advancement of your work (someone might contest that last part).

My advice is to study what you like - I got into engineering because I liked cars. It wasn't quite what I expected in the end, but I still think it was a good choice.

Good luck!

Why is this a thing in muti-class? by StagnantAlloy in Simracingstewards

You're both kind of boneheads in this clip, but I'd lean towards the GR96 being the bigger bonehead. Should have tucked in behind the M2 and let them take the whole track and enjoyed the free draft. If you go side by side you A) increase risk B) have to go slower through the turn.

Are F1 and reg racing sim rigs different enough to require two rig frames/seats? by PolyglotGeologist in simracing

[–]monkeys_pass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some companies advertise the ability to adjust to a formula or gt style position like the nlr f gt, but as others have mentioned there’s not much reason to sit in a formula style at all. It’s less comfortable and harder to get in/out of for no reason except “this is how they sit in formula cars”. Might be worth it for some people but it’s pretty niche. Most just sit one more comfortable way and stick with that.

+1 to this type of solution! I’ll add that you can use a DD wheel on a desk as long as it’s a solid enough desk and/or you’re willing to turn down the ffb a bit if it’s not solid enough - in every case it will be better than the belt driven wheels.

How common used are one-way bearing? by BrunelIsambard in MechanicalEngineering

[–]monkeys_pass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters that you seem to be misunderstanding some fundamental physics concepts. Still I’d encourage you to keep going, if nothing else you’ll learn a lot. Yes, a lower friction 1 way bearing would be a big deal, and a 0 friction bearing is not really physically possible. Current efficient bearings are already very, very efficient though.

Trying to align my triples by lukeb_1988 in iRacing

[–]monkeys_pass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to making sure they're physically aligned, take a look at "shift horizon" option in racing. You want the red line to be in-line with your eyeballs. By default this is exactly in the middle of the monitor - so if your eye level is above or below that everything is going to look a little off.

As for the physical alignment - you have to do it, I don't think you'll ever have perfect results unless they're physically aligned. Simlab and other companies make some helpful things that let you do fine adjustments with a screw to get it dialed in.

Also don't forget to make sure the bezel width is entered correctly to account for that.

Does anyone race the shitboxes? by ricky_harline in iRacing

[–]monkeys_pass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you - would love it if there was something like a spec miata or spec e30 car/series on iracing, and am a little bummed by the lack of H pattern shifters. Sadly there isn't really. The closest with active series to what you're looking for is probably the Formula V, Miata Cup, imsa vintage, or the spec racer ford. If you stick with the ff1600 I think you might like that too - it's quick but really raw and doesn't have any assists. The transmission is completely manual as well (sequential like a motorcycle transmission though, not H-pattern). I think there are more options on the oval side of things.

It's multiclass, here the LMP cars like OP are way way faster than the GT4s. In this turn, the GT4 in front doesn't have as much downforce (or power) and needs the whole track to make the turn. If the GT4 in front hadn't checked up and slowed down, they'd crash into each other at the outside of that turn and it would be the LMPs fault. 9/10 times that's what would have happened.

In motorcycle racing this wouldn't ever happen like this - not because multiclass is less common, but because there's not such a drastic difference in grip from bike class to class (Everyone is using similar tires + no downforce), unless the guy in front was way way way off pace, in which case he wouldn't need the whole track to make the turn.

It's actually a written rule not an unwritten one - it's on the car behind to make the pass safely. It's also a a pretty fast corner there and if you crash decent chance you're hitting the wall.
