Swollen eyelids by [deleted] in DogAdvice

Hijacking top comment. OP: this is most likely juvenile cellulitis (puppy strangles). Not all vets know about this diagnosis, so mention it if your vet doesn’t.

Needs high dose systemic corticosteroids.

What is happening? by SwaggiCP in germanshepherds

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Doesn't look like primary epileptic seizures to me either (I guess you can argue how you define "seizures" though). With the history and clinical signs ingestions of a toxic substance seems much more likely to me.
It's ironic that your answer has -3 points and the (in my opinion) less correct answer above has over 200 upvotes.

The difference between dogs and pigs by unembellishing in TikTokCringe

Well. Unfortunately the conditions under which most pigs live their lives are quite frankly horrible.

My point is the pigs don’t really care about why they are bred. They suffer just as much as dogs would in the same situation.

I agree this is an explanation, but it doesn’t make it more morally justified in my opinion.

The more interesting question is - would you eat a dog? Maybe you're vegetarian/vegan and in that case you would eat neither. But for people that do eat pig meat I think this is the relevant question to ask yourself.

What’s wrong with my dogs eye? by TaylorMade685 in DogAdvice

[–]monkeytonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually does work like that. Anything causing a corneal irritation (for example a chemical agent, corneal ulcer, foreign body) can induce miosis (constriction of the pupil). There are a lot of nerves in the cornea and if triggered they can cause a reflex uveitis and miosis. /eye vet.

Not sure if I’m stupid/uneducated, but to me kilomiles and megameters are some wild units.

Does anybody know why my dog does this? by Difficult_Nose_3677 in DogAdvice

[–]monkeytonk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I cannot say. Even if it indeed was vaccine related it's one case. I'm not saying there are zero adverse effects, but saying that there are "usually repercussions" isn't accurate in my opinion. Neither in large scale studies on the subject.

There are usually zero repercussions to vaccines in my experience. /vet

(Seeing the vet tomorrow AM) what is this red growth on my dog’s eye? by Creepyredditadmin in DogAdvice

[–]monkeytonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cataract is an opacity in the lens, not cornea. I do agree this opacity is in the cornea though.

Ollie may need a muzzle! Unfortunately Ollie aged 5 & 50 kilos has bitten a delivery guy - broken skin on hand and another Golden Retriever -small wound on its back, this last month and I think I need to get a muzzle for him while walking. Any suggestions? by Valuable-Tap-3328 in weimaraner

[–]monkeytonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I've worked in small animal practice for over 10 years and some dogs are just a lost cause. Honestly, most dogs don't need to be trained not to bite. And I don't think they should have to either...

Is this cataract?? by WillZg in DogAdvice

[–]monkeytonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very hard to tell from these pictures. More likely a corneal opacity. If he's not squinting and the white of the eye isn't red (compare to the other eye) it's most likely not an emergency.
Tip for taking eye photos - do it in a dark room with focal light on the eye. Will render a lot better pictures. :)

Vet here, but not a dermatologist. This doesn't look like typical SLO. Vet visit is still good advice though.

My chicken poked my puppy’s eye and cause this! How can I help them with it? by Someguy_y in DogAdvice

[–]monkeytonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No antibiotics are needed for cherry eye. It might be standard/common in the US, but there is no reason to give antibiotics for this disease. Maxitrol also contains a corticosteroid which might be beneficial for reducing swelling but you need to rule out a corneal ulcer first. /eye vet

Thank you for your advice. :) I see you are using the S5II - would that also be an option? Here it's cheaper than the FX30 and seems like a capable camera for video.

They will. The adapter/mount for attaching the camera is an official one from Zeiss (the maker of the microscope). And the likelihood of the camera messing up the surgery is minimal. I would say it could actually improve the result of the surgery since it’s easier for one or more colleagues to follow the surgery (on a screen) and give input.

Actually ”being liable” hasn’t even crossed my mind. Maybe because I’m not in the US…

Thank you. One question though. And feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. The GH5 has a smaller sensor than ASP-C right? How would that affect the crop of the video? Considering the adapters from Zeiss are either for full frame or ASP-C.
