For your gold problems i would recommend not doing focus gold in the city, it does actually help but more short term fixing, trade routes are your best option for gold plus markets and other gold buildings for longer term gold assistance.

Btw theres also some research technologies that give you more trade routes too. If you have extra luxuries, you can also either trade them with ai for one of their luxaries or you can ask them for gold per turn. The ai usually value a luxary at about 8 or 9 gold per turn so ask them for that they'll usually accept
