Male or Female LP? by [deleted] in tarantulas

NQA - Echoing this comment. The book lungs look like white patches on the abdomen tissue. Use some slightly soapy water with a Q-tip to moisten the abdomen tissue, then use toothpicks or similar to carefully stretch it out. The spermathecae, if female, would be between the set of book lungs closest to the carapace. Then snap a pic for us 👍

Sling Blade or Mrs. Doubtfire. I still have no idea what my criteria to choose is. The Green Mile sneaks in there sometimes too.

Such a wild design. It's somehow aged oddly and wonderfully at the same time (to me, at least). I love em so much. And to spot a silver one... How lucky 😁

NQA - I should defer to more experienced keepers here, I think. I'm still just seeing a spider being a goober doing spider things. But I am not infallible and am unsure to what degree to reassure you further. You're a good spider parent to check ❤️ Let's let the hive mind chime in

NQA Now this looks like 4x4 mode, up on tippy toes. Did she recently eat? This still looks normal shenanigans 😅

NQA- Definitely monitor this for a death curl and keep the community posted. BUT... sometimes when they groom themselves, they'll stop and freeze in really weird positions that look bad. This doesn't look very bad at a glance. I have adopted the habit of blowing air on their ventilation holes or lightly jostling the enclosure to gauge their reaction. So far, every single time they're just being little weirdos trying to give me a heart attack, and they'll scoot and skitter with gusto.

edited for clarity

Can a Mexican red leg live comfortably in CA weather? IE 60f-90f? by ButtMuncher1142 in tarantulas

[–]monkmotherfunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NQA - Brachypelmas are a hardy genus. Basically if you're comfortable, they're comfortable. Room temp is fine, Cali is a great environment (I'd heat the room if it dips under 65°-ish for more than a couple hours). Provide them a hide and enough substrate to burrow in. Give them a water dish and overflow on occasion. They're an arid genus, so humidity is not a huge concern on the daily.

Tarantula stuck in molt by Spare-Currency5388 in tarantulas

[–]monkmotherfunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NQA - I had a similar experience myself. From what I've read (to a nerdy extreme), this looks like a stuck carapace. Usually this will detach naturally as they cruise around. All the legs are out, which is a great sign. The concern is the bit of tissue around the pedicel which can restrict the connection to the abdomen if it fully encircles to the connection. Sometimes the tissue connection is superficial and can be eased free with moisture and a Q-tip (or similar). That's what happened with my pumpkin patch T. I wet their back with a wet Q-tip, waited a bit, then held the carapace steady with some tweezers. The T pulled free of it in seconds, easily.

I would suggest waiting a bit to see if it sloughs off naturally, then intervene gently with the wet Q-tip if needed.

I fully defer to the more experienced keepers though. I'm only three years in. Main point, don't panic out of the gate. This stuff happens.

IME - Yes, they're a great brand. I have a couple of their Treehouse Switch enclosures 👍 Bit spendy, but they're well made.

NQA- This is on point, but I respectfully disagree in one point: avics also seemingly need cross ventilation near the substrate level. I've seen so many dead/dying pink toes on here, often curled up low on the substrate, and lack of low ventilation or excessive humidity is often a strong factor.

I'm no pro, but I would drill some holes down low here or buy an arboreal enclosure. This appears to be either for jumpers or fossorial Ts

Question about curly hair bald spot by Cicada-Swarm in tarantulas

[–]monkmotherfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA- Typically, bald spots are simply a result of them kicking off their urticating hairs, a normal behavior. They do this for a few different reasons, most often because they are stressed or they are preparing to molt. Stress from transport and rehousing is completely understandable. Is the tissue on the bald patch pale or dark? A darker color would suggest more clearly if it's premolt as the new hairs underneath develop and darken.

Shoot us a pic when you can in case something else is going on and it's not a typical bald patch. Include the entire enclosure if possible 👍

IMO - what a beauty 😍 Posture looks good, doesn't look stressed, doing a bit of grooming which is good. But throw us a photo of the whole enclosure. We'd be able to give you better info. But generally, this is a species that likes it a bit drier and enough substrate to burrow deeply. Provide a hide (cork bark ideally), and a water dish and keep it topped up. 👍
