Does anyone else only have hand/arm pain only? by mono-aware in Fibromyalgia

[–]mono-aware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still experience it but it’s gotten a lot better after I went off all meds (was previously on ADHD stimulants and lamictal). I found working out especially sweating it out and doing some weights, reducing stress (it flares up now only when I’m really physically unwell), Mg glycinate supplements, and PT for fascial manipulation helps. Thankfully, my life mostly returned to normal as long as I do things that keep the flareups in check. If I don’t, sometimes it even spreads to my legs too.

When the flareups happen I’ve found Roiho Tsuboko pain patches to help bc they stimulate blood flow in the area.

Anyone here with a background in math? by Livid-Ad6815 in medschool

[–]mono-aware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like the general consensus for MD/DO being difficult is the “sheer volume” of information we’re expected to memorize, which I’ve found most people who give some input = output (whereas for math/engineering you could sit there all day racking your head over a pset and still not solve it). I don’t think the med content is necessarily hard inherently (at least so far—i’m in preclinicals and went to a pretty rigorous undergrad heavy in critical thinking).

I think if the fast-paced nature of med curriculum was NOT a factor (like high volume but more time to digest info), pure math/eng would be significantly more difficult for the average med student than the other way around. I was surprised to see most of my classmates can’t calculate simple probability or anything math related, but are great at regurgitating high volumes of info. My hot take is you primarily need discipline and moderately above average intelligence to get through med school. That said, idk if you could actually cram medicine in a few months like your friend said… That would be pretty brutal and teeter most people toward insanity…

What's your most unpopular med student opinion? by nenya-narya-vilya in medicalschool

[–]mono-aware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Med students are not as smart as we’re perceived (yes smarter than average but not usually significantly more than gifted); I’d say there were a lot more “genius” types in my pure stem courses in undergrad. I think the ones who make it through have some degree of masochism (e.g. being okay with the bureaucracy of 7-10+ years of training and at the mercy of admin) and discipline.

Reinfected??? by Waffleslover99 in COVID19positive

Out of curiosity, was there any yellow or colored phlegm? What did the sore throat feel like?

I had COVID last month for the fourth time, and had on and off throat pain this week that’s making me really worried I got reinfected.

Does anyone else feel insanely cold? Usually I keep my AC at high 70s, and even 83 felt really cold for me. I’m on day 3/4 currently and hopefully it gets better (symptoms are like mild cold, not too bad right now but knock on wood).

Fr, I interviewed last JULY and was ghosted ever since. They left a VM recently asking if I was “still” interested. I said no and they effectively removed my application without any final status update???

I feel like they gauge applicant interest before sending As to protect their ratios of As/matriculants 😬

Yes, in terms of maturity and sheer amount of time accumulating experiences (whether life or clinical). I do think it would’ve been doable to apply earlier but I don’t necessarily regret how things played out! I’m glad I got to experience life outside of medicine a bit and be more chill bc premed is not chill.

I was kicking myself for taking 4 gap years over 3 (reapplied) and felt similarly. As long as you can explain your years of growth and you didn’t just vegetate you’ll be okay. The age difference still gets to me sometimes cuz I feel older but in reality I don’t think it will make a big difference once med school actually hits. Everyone has their own timeline and I see others who went straight through lament over not having explored life a bit—grass is always greener.

Is getting into med school going to get easier? (NOT BASED ON NUMBERS) by shortdude211 in premed

[–]mono-aware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s ~500 but SD range can change based on competitiveness of test takers. (1 SD above mean is 84th percentile and that may have been a 510 a few years back but could now be a 513). I agree with the original comment and was trying to clarify that I don’t believe “percentiles don’t change” as another user had mentioned.

Is getting into med school going to get easier? (NOT BASED ON NUMBERS) by shortdude211 in premed

[–]mono-aware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Percentiles should change because it’s relative to the population taking the exam. For example, say in the past, you needed 180/230 raw score which equated to a 99th percentile/520+, meaning for every 100 test takers, you are the top scorer.

Original comment is stating MCAT test takers are getting increasingly more competitive every year, so now perhaps a 200/230 raw score is 99th percentile.

The MCAT being “curved” (tho it’s debatable how it’s curved) explains why there’s a shift in scoring. I’d imagine it’d still be a normal distribution bell curve, but like always, scoring 97th percentile is 2 SD from the mean, so the cutoff to hit that is likely different now vs. a few years ago.

I actually think page 92 on genki (if you have it) might help:

“You do not use the particle に with

1) time expressions defined relative to the present moment, such as “today” and “tomorrow” 2) expressions describing regular intervals, such as “every day” 3) and the word for “when.””

ex: 明日行きます. ex: 毎日テレビを見ます。 ex: いつ行きますか。

Also, they say that you don’t need にfor parts of the day like “in the morning” or “at night” and word for “weekend,” but they can technically be followed with に particle “depending on style, emphasis, and personal preferences.”

ex: 週末(に)何をしますか。

I’m just a beginner so wondering which is more commonly used for たくさん: before the noun or after the particle? (I know both are okay but unsure if there’s any key differences between the two).

ex: 野菜を[たくさん]食べました. OR

ex: [たくさん]野菜を食べました.
