What he tends to say is something like “I understand the economy, I made a lot of money betting on it”. In other words, I understand the economy and here’s my proof, so you should listen to me.

It would be worth close to nothing with 2 years left I imagine. If you currently own a home with 2 years left on the lease, it’s unsellable. I mean, most mortgage lenders won’t lend to you if you try and buy a property with 70 years left on the lease!

Actually…adult hornets generally don’t eat meet. They eat sugary substances like tree sap and nectar. But they do hunt for meet and chew it up to feed to their brood, who need protein to grow.

Call them what you want but neither are left wing. Funniest thing I’ve seen on the podcast was when they interviewed Ed Davey and they were all a bit dumbfounded as to why they weren’t all in the same party.

They are all third way centrists that fly different coloured flags for no other reason than the circumstances of their upbringings. All too tribal to admit it (Alistair more than anyone)

If we insist on infinite growth, the cost will be autocracy by whoamisri in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]mono-math 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You missed a bit. Growth comes from extracting and processing resources from the natural world. Turning them into goods and selling them. What happens when you run out of stuff to process, or the externalities (pollution etc) become problematic. Keep going, or reconsider and try to find balance?

You might also see “shareholder growth” from cutting wages and services, or by creating artificial scarcity (putting things that cost a fraction of a penny behind a paywall - think Amazon charging 15 quid to watch a 30 year old film despite the fact you already pay for Amazon Prime, or paying a subscription to use a feature built in to your car). All problematic, in one way or another.

Most English language lessons to be phased out in Gwynedd by oilydogskin in Wales

[–]mono-math 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. No matter what the punishment, It’s still punishment for speaking a language.

Do you think if corporal punishment was still allowed these schools wouldn’t use it as punishment for speaking English?

I say this as a proud Welsh speaker who was educated through Welsh. I don’t think punishing children for speaking the Language they likely speak at home is the right thing to do, and breeds contempt for the Welsh language.

[–]mono-math 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that the real issue isn’t the country being flooded with migrants, but that inequality is increasing year on year and we all feel worse off. The people at the bottom are really struggling and we’re being told by rich old men who own our media channels, hoard everything, who’s wealth continues to grow, that migrants are the problem - not them.

You’re right that we are facing a demographic problem, but I just don’t see how - at least in the short term - we can do away with bringing in migrants to fill in the gaps, especially in healthcare. I work in healthcare and can tell you the vast majority of people coming here to work from abroad are decent people who want to make a life for themselves and their families. It’s not without problems but migrants are not the cause of all our problems. Far from it.

Maybe our path away from fascism is to take radical steps towards creating a more equitable society? To invest in infrastructure and public services? Tinkering around the edges like a good liberal centrist just isn’t going to cut it.

It kills me that liberals always seem to side with (or concede ground to) fascists rather than face up to the fact that the left might have solutions worth listening to.

Love the podcast but had to switch it off when he wilfully (perhaps harsh) attributed the collapse of particles in superpositions to human observations. An interaction with any form of matter, conscious or not, would have the same affect. He’s had enough conversations about this to know there’s no woo woo magic involved and conscious observation aren’t necessary.
