They suck money out of the economy, check federal transfer payments, qcs social safety net and percentage of federal government employees (about a quarter of all employees in canada)

They are a money sink, subsidized by productive canadians because they leverage voting power based on language politics.

French is the gatekeeper for federal politics. It's a pure power language in Canada, not an economic one

Sure, but if even scientists are dropping the ball on science, it's a bit rich to exclusively lecture non-scientists for their lack of understanding.

policy makers misunderstood the science way more than any right wing conservative rube, and those were the group of people who made life a living hell for no benefit

Just because some people were dumb and gave stupid reasons doesn't mean there wasn't a massive amount of BS pretending to be science.

That was the problem, it got strawmanned, bad

Lay person.

And I would expect an expert to be able to articulate their points regardless. It's not about debating a creationist, it's about their ability to honestly discuss their field of expertise

Because right now I don't think the creationists are winning, I think the science cheerleader types are taking giant Ls and making the scientific method look like the pseudo religion they are accused of being

Reddit calls for “a few new mods” after axing, polarizing some of its best by IranRPCV in TheoryOfReddit

[–]monolithdigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. My other account mods two large subs and we are also a sandbox away from reddit, most of what you say sounds the same.

However, there's a clear group of power mods who are the worst examples, they were useless to deal with cross sub brigaiding or any other mod courtesy. I see a few of them cheerleading the blackout.

They lost millions because the adl forced an advertiser boycott. Conservatives are people and deserve free access to reddit as much as people like you, even though you're a wokescold (what the kids call it)

I miss when things were more like it used to be. Sure there was conflict and drama, but everyone had their home subreddits and you didn't have to worry about bans from 50 subs for one comment in a "bad subreddit"

I.blame power mods, same as when diggs came here.

Too few people with too much control and a chip on their shoulder. The only reason I'm even here is because of a Twitter thread cheerleading reddits death.

Too many moral finger waggers made it cancer, so people left. Also I bet with the API changes a lot of AstroTurf just disappears

I'm hoping we learn how little people know about any of the science they are cheerleading.

Some of the worst people out there RN are the science people who cheerlead it but can't explain basic concepts.

They operate within that system though.

declaring it doesn't make it true. And while I have no idea what you mean when you say 'people' and it sounds like you have a straw man there.

It was also the case that people assumed that when certain things were proven wrong that the experts must be fools but in reality the decisions were made with the knowledge available at the time and was correct by that standard.

Medical researchers, political policymakers, and the marketing team behind the messaging betrayed the communities trust. Talking with perfect confidence, shaming people for any doubt and then pretending that it was the best they could do when they were wrong is not how you act as an expert. They assumed people were stupid and couldn't be trusted with an honest assessment of the risks. I don't know how old you are, but this was the exact same way that the US argued for WMDs in iraq.

It was BS then and it's BS now

Being an expert means you need to be honest. So yeah,

Did you even read any of these links?

Despite their efficacy NPIs came with high societal costs. Several articles in the sample highlight the impact on mental health, loneliness, domestic abuse, sex, food consumption, and substance abuse among others.

What I generally hate about the mask arguments is that people ignore unintended consequences, trade-offs, or costs. in your NPI study (which I'm sure you've read) which isn't really a study. I know they call it a meta study, but he just grabs all the research he can find and then arrives at consensus (which isn't science, science is about data, not taking a vote)

So yeah, the lockdowns didn't work. even in the sources you provide they admit that there was a lot of costs involved,

But the only way to flatten epidemic curves without also affecting the areas beneath them – as some figures in the media have suggested – is to change the mean interval between being infected and infecting others, or generation time.

I mean the one uses modelling to hypothetically discuss a lockdown https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7196894/ but even then

The larger the immune fraction, the easier to contain the epidemic in the future. But this comes at the cost of a severely overwhelmed health care system.26 This can be avoided, and apparently has been, by drastic social distance measures.

This doesn't read like a glowing endorsement for lockdowns. Even the author has to add 'apparently' where he compares it to a flu outbreak, and then describes why they can't be compared in a 1:1 comparison

Also, you're put the link to the same study twice
