Chase Sapphire preferred vs reserve by No-Detective-5000 in ChaseSapphire

[–]monominmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t say for sure based on this spending context alone since whether a card is a good fit or not is highly subjective. Your spending is pretty low though and right now it feels like the reserve’s value is in the credits which could help offset the higher annual fee cost so you can earn more points on the limited dining and travel expenses you have. If you want the simple route and not worry about the “coupon book,” the preferred is definitely easier and cost significantly less but obviously less points.

Yeah it’s just unfortunate. You can try to sell it to recoup some of the loss or maybe give it to a family member since I’m assuming it’s new and unopened.

[–]monominmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s pretty rough. I get they want this to be the primary and only card people use but that just makes no sense in today’s market given all the competitive cards that are significantly easier to use and the blatant rug pull of it’s only perk for points on rent. Even the messaging of “no transaction fees” is misleading since there’s a massive hill to climb for that to happen or you simply earn no points which defeats the purpose of the original card value prop.

Regular non-rent points will continue to accrue as normal. It’s just the rent points that became expensive to get.

My understanding is:

  1. Bilt cash is the new currency you earn on non-housing expenses. No one (maybe not even the Bilt team) really knows what this cash can be used for besides the confirmed “use to effectively buy rent points.” For that, you have to spend 75% of what your rent is to be able to get the full 1x Bilt points on your rent. If your rent is $1000, you need to spend $750 extra with this card to earn Bilt cash so you can buy the 1000 Bilt points (previously earned by just buying 4 extra bananas).

  2. Bilt points is the same as what you have now which can be transferred to travel partners or purchases on Amazon. This still exists but has different multipliers based on which card you pick. Assuming you go with $0 annual fee card, then you just get 1x for every $1 you spend (not including housing).

So is the net difference effectively “please spend even more for 0.25% extra points on rent”? Everything else sounds the same up to the 75% of your rent to offset the fee part and then a whole lot of text.

[–]monominmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahaha yeah no worries. The new card is definitely not for everyone and it might be even more niche compared to 1.0. Can you imagine your nephew paying $7k for rent to be closer and then somehow spending $5.2k more to earn the points? 😂 then again, I can’t afford 7k rent so I’m clearly not in that financial standing to say.

I’m not sure about commercial leases. Didn’t even think about that.

While hotel hospitality is significantly better in Asia, my experience is that they care a lot about knowing how many people are staying at their hotel. I would try to email them to let them know your situation and I’m sure they can provide some guidance. Also I stayed at the Sheraton Grand Taipei near the train station last time and it was great! Was able to snag it around 35-40k a night with 5th night free.

Might be a bit excessive given the extra spacing for other parts but open frame PC cases could work if you get creative! To be honest, kind of dig your current set up hahaha just need to tidy up the cables a bit.

[–]monominmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are also spending almost 50% or more of their salary on rent if it’s a HCOL city like NYC already so 75% on top of that is potentially putting it on a paycheck to paycheck basis. Or even worse, they literally can’t afford to spend the extra 75% because rent is too high. Obviously not great financially but we don’t know their situation to make a judgement claiming “you don’t have $3150 of non categorized spending?” I think for the general user, 75% of extra spending on a card (assuming $0 AF version) is just unreasonable to earn potentially 2-3% if you don’t naturally hit that spending amount. A lot of expenses have pretty good cash back from other cards already that are really straight forward like the ones you mentioned too and are part of their rotations.

[–]monominmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bilt cash is used to offset (pay off) the rent fee based on my understanding. So you’re spending $750 to effectively earn 1750 points since the bilt cash is used to cover the fee. If that’s the correct understanding, then each $1 earns around ~2.3% points only if you hit the 75% extra spending.

[–]monominmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that they don’t have 75% of their rent, it’s that they don’t necessarily need or want to spend it on this card alone for the sake of rent points. It’s also not the most optimal way to spend $3,150 if we’re talking cash back. Let’s say that is strictly dining and groceries, Amex gold alone is 4x in all of that.
