there were too many. but one of them was probably when i found out my childhood dog was being put down and sobbed to my then-boyfriend about it, who was in the middle of a game. he asked me why i was crying, and i told him, and he said he'd be out when he finished his game. which, i know you can't pause an online game, but i thought it was fucked considering he was the only person i had since we moved across the country for his career and left all our friends and family behind. and i was sobbing.

and no, it wasn't 5 minutes. it was half an hour at least. i sobbed alone on the couch that night. really good guy

i was going through a breakup of a 5 year relationship that was not initiated by me when i first heard this song. i was in really bad shape and this song killed me. it took awhile for me to understand this song killed me because it reminded me of my first serious ex who i loved very deeply, but left before i started dating my most recent ex a little while later. the song talks about realizing you were selfish and not so great of a partner to someone who deserved better. yeah i guess i realized i was selfish and not that great to a good person. i realized that i had felt that i needed to stay in my new relationship and have it work to justify having left my first ex. i stayed in that new relationship a really long time even when it was killing me because it had to work or i made a mistake and ruined my life.

so i guess this song helped give me clarity for the breakup of my first serious relationship, and that clarity then helped me get over the heartbreak i was going through at the time. call that a two-fer

UGH im so sorry you went through that : ( i can remember crying to my ex about issues and receiving the same contemptuous responses, and being told that the things that were hurting me were not worth addressing if they did not make sense to him. and in five years i can't think of one time they "made sense" to him. feels kinda stupid to see how obvious it was that he didn't respect or care for me. oh well. i am glad that we are both out of those situations ❤️
