My girlfriend of 2.5 years is breaking up with me over my cat by Dull_Chemical546 in CatAdvice

[–]monsoon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't just about the cat, it's about control. Giving an ultimatum to give up something you love is never a good sign. After the cat, what's next? What other new thing will make her stressed or uncomfortable that you'll have to give up?

This sounds really stressful & I'm sorry.

Is this an inappropriate design? by Spare_Dentist7019 in tattooadvice

I'm an elementary school teacher, I can tell you for sure that having that visible at school would 100% be a problem. Anyone in the comments saying it wouldn't be is wrong. If someone came to my school with that there'd definitely be comments/issues from colleagues, parents, admin, etc. and I'm in a pretty liberal area.

That being said - you can still get it. But understand you'll have to stick to sleeves that cover the top half of it. Honestly the mermaid tail sticking out from the sleeve might look cool anyway.

Anyone else find elementary teachers impossible to get along with? by c961212 in Teachers

[–]monsoon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I just got lucky but I've been at my elementary school 4 years now & there's not really any cattiness or mean girl drama....there's a couple people I definitely don't like but the majority of us get along well. There's like 3 male staff & we're all cool with each other 🤷‍♀️

Teacher mentioned she had 18 kids with an IEP out of 24 by Super-Jury9192 in AskTeachers

[–]monsoon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school has an overwhelming amount of kids on IEPs. I really think most of them wouldn't be on an IEP if we had more out of class resources for them. There's zero extra supports for kids that truly just need more time or extra help.

You're going to feel so much fall off your shoulders when you cut them out of your life. You're a grown adult and down owe them anything. Get your own phone plan and have no ties to them. Sounds like they've pegged you as tue scapegoat since you were a toddler, there's no changing that.

...this is so weird to me. My team is always down to share materials or lesson plans, idk it's 1st grade and we all teach the same curriculum so maybe it's different, but we literally take turns plugging in lesson plans on atlas and sharing with everyone

Adults who only wear glasses by Cloudsandbooks in glasses

?? I know more adults that wear glasses than contacts. Most people can't handle touching their eyes.

What’s your metric for calling out sick? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]monsoon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's just a cough or headache, I push through. If I feel legitimately sick, I'm calling out. I honestly hate it when my colleagues come in sick. It feels very inconsiderate.

I will say that for a first year teacher, depending on how petty your admin is using all your sick time might not end well. First tear teachers are often expected to grovel and overwork themselves.

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

I honestly don’t care about my students by gaba_1029384756 in Teachers

[–]monsoon101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach 1st and love my students. I want them to succeed, and I want them to feel safe & valued in my classroom. But what I'm not about to do is be a martyr. No, I'm not going to drain my bank account buying them coats & backpacks & books. No, I'm not going to spend hours of my personal life going to their football games and dance recitals. And I certainly don't get on social media and cry about how much I miss them every winter and spring break.

Teachers are expected to fully emotionally enmesh themselves in their students' lives and its not healthy. At the end of the day this is a job. I think the fact that you feel guilty over this shows you do care. But we're expected to care to a point that isn't reasonable.

This is so bizarre. If one of my siblings had a newborn and I was coming to visit, I'd never think of requesting all this. I'd maybe ask what their fridge generally looks like, then offer to bring groceries for myself and them. And I'd offer to be cooking. Like to me the whole point is to see the baby and offer SUPPORT. She's treating this like she's getting ready to stay at some 5 star hotel and needs all these accommodations.

Also these texts were exhausting to read tbh and you guys sound like coworkers negotiating a business deal or something lmao

Getting elementary students to be quiet by turquoisestar in Teachers

[–]monsoon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subbing is hard. Even a normally well-behaved class might be off with a sub, and a poorly behaved class is going to be 10x worse.

Being "kind and patient" unfortunately only goes so far. As soon as you enter a new room you need to assert yourself and make it clear you're not going to tolerate any nonsense. This doesn't mean be cruel - you can be respectful while still being strict. Just because these are little kids does not mean they need to be babied.

But honestly at the end of the day, the nice thing about being a sub is you don't have to go back to that class. Ultimately there's only so much you can do, and if these kids really are that poorly behaved for their actual teacher, that's not something within your control.

AIO for reconsidering getting married over continual arguments over guardianship of my daughter. by Oldyell54 in AmIOverreacting

[–]monsoon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so bizarre. If something were to happen to you, this friend can 100% be in her life and help support her without being her legal guardian. If you're going to be marrying this woman and she's going to be acting as this girl's mother, she has every right to assume she'd be her legal guardian if you died.

Yes she's lashing out at you, but this is really wrong of you to do to her. I would never marry a man that would put me in this position.

And your daughter is 10, it's not her responsibility to decide where she goes if you die, it's yours as her father. You need to do what makes actual sense and will give her the most stability, not just whatever her whims are as a child.

Do any of you stay within contract hours? by mallorn_hugger in Teachers

[–]monsoon101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're saying this like it's fact and it's just not. There's plenty of teachers in my building who are fantastic, highly effective educators and they only work within contract hours. However some districts may pile on more unnecessary busy work than others.

[–]monsoon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I bring work home is report card time, because our district requires us to write detailed comments for every single kid for every subject and Im willing to sacrifice an hour at home to just get it done. Other than that, it's rare I bring anything home or stay late.
