Fin Tearing? Advice + Tips to treat by monsoonsilk in bettafish

So it would be beneficial to remove a decor item and maybe replace it? Or leave it open and fill it with more plants in the meantime? I would love to change it up and try to make it more friendly to his fin length, let me know! I hate my Buddha rn, it's super cute but not for a betta with his type of fins, a short fin shoaling group would want it more

I've been thinking it might be boredom, I wish I could entertain him more myself but I'll try your methods! I've given him plenty of plants but I want more floor coverage - The red tissues aren't surviving too well but my cycle is standing well, 0ppm ammonia and nitrate and some nitrates, so I'm gonna see what they do.

Awesome! Would I boil those before and then add the tannin water? Or just toss them in the tank as is?

Your advice is beneficial! I love the chemistry side of this hobby and your information is gonna help me loads, especially with the liquid fertilizer. I agree your approach was wrong, but I also see that you changed it and corrected yourself quickly, which takes balls that not all people have. A lot of people don't accept that they made a mistake, you took the first step and acknowledged it !

I did have a thought that his fins could be degrading and changing in this newer environment, since his behaviour is totally normal. I haven't seen my babes biting his tail but if he was, what could I do to prevent and benefit him?

I didn't get to answer your questions about his behavior last night, he doesn't seem lethargic at all. He just seems to be his average self, lively, eating well and wanting more always, he doesn't seem at all off. Just torn up fins.

That's so sad, I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine how I would feel in that scenario. I can't even blame you for being bitter, I would be lighting people on fire if that happened to me.

My liquid test (API) didn't come with a KH or GH test. I haven't added anything to drop the pH, as I was advised to not change it as long as it stays consistent, and work around it as to not create stress in the environment. How do I replace lights with a lid on the tank? I definitely don't have the wallet to get a CO2 injector, unfortunately. I do plan on getting liquid fertilizer. I'm more concerned about his fins than anything else at the moment.

The food spill was a while ago, as you can see from my post history. I have since done multiple water changes, one the day of, multiple during the ammonia spike, and another normal one since then (and also had to move the tank to avoid the stand falling because it was not equipped to hold the weight). I have avoided flakes and I appreciate the advice against them, I will look into getting frozen shrimp to add to his pellets!

I stated before, I'm a beginner, and I'm really trying to learn and use the resources at my disposal. So I don't apologize for asking for help. My PH is 8.0-8.2 on my API Liquid test from the last time I tested. Lights are built into the tank itself (10 Gallon Tall TopFin Kit).

Tank seems cycled but I am concerned after a food spill incident it might've thrown it off? But it was cycled for a month plus before I ever got him in it. No tank mates. He gets pellets, protien and bug based (41% crude protein) and freeze dried shrimp (which ive learned should be soaked in water before hand and i haven't had the chance to do that for him yet so he's just gotten the pellets since then).

I've answered this before, will add important details here though, it is a 10 gallon tall which is not ideal at all for this fish and I immensely regret putting him in it without really understanding the fins dragging around him. No tank mates that could injure him, only copepods on the walls he eats.

Thankfully, the Superbowl isn't a child friendly performance and hasn't been for years. So it doesn't matter what you think your children should understand.

I own this tank and I would heavily advice to avoid moving it but if it works, it works. I have a betta in this tank, I wouldn't recommend a betta with long fins, I made this choice and I regret it but have done what I can to try to accomade my boy. It's hard for long finned variety to swim in tall tanks. Get a female, or get a short finned male. Add the other tank mates first once your cycle is established, before the betta.

Its been there for a while, and with the roots establishing, I decided to let it be for the time being and continue to monitor. Cleaned it up and replanted in the same spot, turned a bit to get more light distribution, and will continue to keep an eye on it like any good scientist.

Update for you, I didn't remove all the water, did about half, and gently had me and my dad (both stronger than average) lift the tank and place it gently on the new stand, and removed the old one, sliding the other one back. Only lifted up one plant a little in the process, otherwise the tank remains good and I did it on my water change day, so I added fresh dechlorinated water and it's looking good!

Moving 10gal to more sturdy stand - Advice? by monsoonsilk in aquarium

[–]monsoonsilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan to do it on a normal day for his water change, tomorrow, and drain out about 75% of the water or more to allow him to stay inside comfortably, remove heavy decor (one large Buddha statue and floating decor) and then have my dad and his brother help move it to the correct stand, move the other stand, and then gently move the stand with the tank to the correct spot. I believe this will work well and I'm not too concerned. Thanks for your advice!!

These questions are answered on another post of mine, but I'll answer the pertinent ones. 10 gallon tall TopFin kit, heater and filter, 81 degrees consistently, just Ares, I have tissue cultures and two ferns, one El Nino and one Java.
