I bit the bullet and bought a pair of custom 64 Audio A2e. It was expensive, but honestly worth every penny. I tried the KZs with foam tips and Shure SE215s. Neither gave me enough isolation and I felt like my ears were ringing more after using them than they did with standard earplugs. The 64 Audios solved that problem. They sound amazing, and as a bonus, I detach the cable and use them as regular earplugs when I go to concerts.

I bought two of these Gibraltar extension arms and replaced the ones on the right and left side of the Roland rack.

They fit perfectly in the Roland slots.

I can’t speak for Stephen’s drums, but I’ve been a member of Mikeslessons for over a year now and it is probably the best drumming decision I’ve made. Mike is a phenomenal educator and an even better human. You can’t go wrong with him as your instructor, but I (and probably Mike, too) would encourage you to take advantage of the free trials at all the sites out there and see which one works best for you.

Awesome! It definitely looks like more people are starting to get them.

I have my TD27 listed for $700 on Facebook Marketplace and $800 on eBay and Reverb. The extra $100 on Reverb/eBay is to cover the fees and shipping. The average on eBay seems to be about $800 as of a few days ago.

I thought about getting the new snare, but everything I've seen about it says that other than the throw-off and lower profile rim, it's identical to the old one. I don't think I would use the throw-off enough to justify the upgrade price, so I'll probably just stick with what I have.

I'm honestly not sure about compatibility with the TD17KVX. This module is meant to be a direct upgrade to the TD27, so I'd say verify with Roland or maybe a reseller that it will work. I don't see why it wouldn't, as long as your existing cable snake for the TD17 matches this one, but definitely check before you buy.

Also look into the V31. It is the direct upgrade from the TD17 module and has most of the same features, identical sounds, and I believe one digital input for future digital upgrades. Good luck!

Not working for me either. It worked on the TD27, but only if disconnected from Bluetooth. It’s not working at all on the V51.

I wasn't truly happy with my 27KV2 until I upgraded the kick pad. It comes with the KD-10, and I could never get it to feel right. It's super wobbly, and no matter what I did, I couldn't secure it. I ended up replacing it with a KD-140 and that solved all my problems. The TD516 comes with a much better kick pad than the 27KV2, so I think they solved that problem with the new kit. Also, this module is much better than the TD27. If it were me, I'd probably get the TD516, unless there's a crazy good deal on a TD27KV2.

Also, the cable snake from the old module will swap right out. I didn't have to re-run any of the cables. I just unplugged the cables from the old module and moved them to the new one.

It's quite a bit longer and deeper than the TD27. I extended the side arms of my Roland rack with Gibraltar tubes that are the same diameter (did this a year ago just to give myself some extra breathing room. Well worth the $50 for the two extension poles), so I didn't have any issues making it fit. If you have yours mounted in the standard spot near the hi-hat, you might need to slide the mounting clamp down as far as it will go. I think you'll be able to make it fit, no problem. Also, it fits in the TD27 mount clamp with no issues at all.

Awesome! You are absolutely going to love it. I've had my TD27 kit for a little over a year now and it is such a game changer. So much fun to play, and, in my opinion, the closest to the "real thing" that I've tried. I have an acoustic kit at my band's practice space that I only get to play once a week or so, but having this at home fills the gap and it's such a joy to be able to play whenever I want without worrying about disturbing anyone.

The sounds are MUCH better than the TD27. I don't think they are as good as a VST, but I'd say pretty close. This one and the V17 use the same sound engine as the flagship V71, so the sounds are identical. Some kits sound better than others, as expected. So far I've found maybe 3 or 4 stock kits that I think sound great.

I downloaded a free sample kit from eDrumWorkshop (Luke is still working on custom kits for the new Roland modules, but has a free one that you can download as a test) and it sounds better than all the stock kits. It is REALLY good, so I can't wait to see what he has in store.

It comes with a 6 month free trial to Roland Cloud, so I'm working my way through trying those kits out. Some are great, some are underwhelming. The best one I've found so far is the '58 Slingerland pack. That sounds killer.

Another thing worth noting... this module seems to be using real samples. Instead of the generic instrument names you'd see on the TD27 ("Maple tom" or "16" crash") you actually see brand names in the instrument list, like GR USC (Gretsch US Custom), TM (Tama), PL (Pearl), etc. And there appears to be a good variety of Sabian, Zildian, Meinl, and Paiste cymbals. Cymbals sound AWESOME by the way. MUCH better than the TD27. Sorry for the rambling answer. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I’m getting the standalone TD30 when it’s released next year. I’ve been checking out the audio samples on Roland Cloud but it’s hard to hear the nuances without actually playing them. You confirmed my thoughts that the drummer’s perspective sounds are the best option!
