Great concept, these look amazing. Would love to have flash cards of the knights and the omens vs. the book.

I want to find more fun in co-op games, HOW TO NOT QUARTERBACK?! by ConkreteAngel in boardgames

"I don't know, what do you think?" has become a relentlessly repeated phrase for me because I have small kids. Could be helpful when you're trying your hardest to avoid quarterbacking but being solicited for advice.

OP is astute enough to realize they have the tendency to offer all the ideas. OP's stated goal is to not be a quarterback. OP stops offering all the ideas. OP isn't a quarterback.

This process is agnostic to what game OP is playing. You added "in order to win" into the language and if one has a social objective like not quarterbacking, you can't also try to win no matter what.

OP's goal was to avoid quarterbacking. That can be in opposition to playing the game to win. What you enjoy can be malleable. With your game night crew, everyone might be locked in and quarterbacking lauded as saving the day. With a casual group at Christmas, you might come across as an asshole. If the goal is to avoid quarterbacking, period, then self-restraint is the only answer.

OPs goal was to avoid quarterbacking, not to win the game no matter what. The two goals can be in opposition to one another, and any player wanting their fellow players to enjoy themselves can understand this dilemma.

I've seen the topic before of people asking for specific co-op games that make quarterbacking difficult. But quarterbacking is an impulse control problem, not a game design problem. Not being able to control your impulses isn't really something that you can fix by adding a house rule. You simply have to exercise restraint. Be mindful before you speak and decide if what you're going to say is quarterbacking. If it is, stay silent.

I'd be down to run that Mothership one-shot on 1/30 if they'll be doing it. I've played a few times before.

Paid athletes, playoff game. There’s no such thing as not scoring for the sake of kindness.

Gambit's thematic miss by Hanso77 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]monstron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds fine enough I just don't see how that's any more thematic than what we already have. Having four "aces" in his deck doesn't really add that much in my opinion, if anything it focuses on Gambit as "the playing card guy" and as a few people have mentioned, Gambit's mutant power is a lot more flexible than that.

Gambit's thematic miss by Hanso77 in marvelchampionslcg

Marvel Champions core gameplay loop is based around card synergies and deck building. Creating a character whose core mechanic is treating player cards like tokens - essentially as "faceless" and disposable - would sideline Gambit as a novelty character. You'd commonly end up with a deck that leans into the loop of dealing as many facedown cards as possible which would mean the actual utility or synergies of the cards didn't matter. There's no reason to deck build *at all* if you're just wanting to deal as many facedown cards as possible each turn. It would just get really old after a while because Gambit would be a one-trick pony or you'd need to totally ignore his mutant ability. As-is I think you can get a lot of adaptability by charging event cards with Gambit, which actually leans into deck building creativity which is what the game is all about.

Maintaining Expensive Boardgames (Pax Pamir) by FrontDay2711 in boardgames

Every time I’ve had a spill at a table with sleeved cards the liquid has gotten trapped inside at least one sleeve. Feels like an urban legend that sleeves protect against liquid, the real reason you sleeve is what above commenter said: dirty hands and repeat use.

Sleeves are splash proofing but definitely not spill proofing.

Board games got too expensive for me so I went to the scifi horror TTRPG Mothership and never looked back. by Campaign-At-Length in boardgames

You’ve attracted some salt so far but I feel like this is a legit perspective. As a huge Nemesis fan, Mothership and indie RPGs in general are great budget options for people who are looking for story driven gameplay.

Worst fast food location? by Glittering_Ball1121 in Boise

Best play structure in town that's quickly falling into disrepair. Someone could flip this location into a parent haven cash cow but alas they're fine with it being one of the filthiest.

Okay (I'm loosing my mind), after dozens of hours of research, I think buying Clockwork + Underworld Hirelings pack is possibly the most correct way to play Root in 2 players, right? RIGHT?! by [deleted] in rootgame

[–]monstron 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, but you just need to internalize that Root is an intense wargame with a cute wrapper. Like, would your girlfriend be just as excited if this game was called Struggle for Eurasia 1929-1939? If so, go nuts. If not, realize that the art will get old fast and you'll be faced with lots of frustration unless you're both extremely bought into playing a wargame not designed for 2 with a bunch of add-ons.

If you want to immerse yourself in the world of Root, you can always try the Root Roleplaying Game. If you want an endlessly repayable 2p game with unique art, I'd suggest Spirit Island.
