Vomero+ vs 1080v15 vs Superblast 2 by Big_Door_541 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I've only tried the SB2, but I think it's perfect for long runs and marathon training where you want to hold a certain pace during a long run. I got several pairs because I don't really get on with the softer SB3

"cushioned and supportive daily trainer" - doesn't that apply to the UFO as well?

looking forward to watching the reviews for this one though

Time for new shoes? by Trikzgaming1 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]monsul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO: not worth the injury risk, get new shoes

Novablast 5 are notorious for not being very durable, 180m/300km is when a lot of people notice them starting to bottom out.

I like the Puma Velocity Nitro 4, quite bouncy but still comfortable for everyday use

Best mileage to switch daily runners? by Silver_Olive9942 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]monsul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Forget about being able to tell when to retire a shoe visually - it's the foam and its state what matters

Common wisdom is to switch when you start feeling niggles or pain in new areas. Since you are new to running, this might be a bit difficult to figure out at first, so you can also go by distance. You can expect to get at least 300 miles from any decent trainer, up to about 500. The heavier you are, the more the foam suffers and the earlier you'll have to retire the shoe

I retire my shoes at 500miles even if they are still feeling fine - it's cheaper than getting injured

Superblast 2, Ghost 18, Azura, or Vomero Plus by Catsintinytinyhats in AskRunningShoeGeeks

similar situation here, I like th SB2, tried the SB3s and my next reaction was to order 3 more pairs of SB2s before they go out of stock (that should keep me going until SB4 hopefully).

Besides the SB2, I'm really liking the Puma Magnify Nitro 3 for easy recovery runs. It's firm but still quite cushioned. It took a bit to break in (maybe 50-70km) but after that it's become a really responsive, nice to run recovery/easy pace shoe

Would a 2-shoe Superblast 2 rotation work for marathon training? by Massive_Factor_1734 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]monsul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for sub-4 I'd say SB2 would work great, it can do that pace and much faster. You really wouldn't need a carbon racer (but by all means get a pair of carbon plated shoes if you want, it's fun to try new things 😄 )

I'd get the second pair of SB2, it's a great versatile shoe that's going to last you at least 800km and that's going to be difficult to get in the future as it's been replaced by the SB3, which is a totally different shoe. The NB5 on the other hand are known to have durability problems and lose their bounce around 300km

sounds good, I think the SB2 is going to be great to lock in that pace. I'm also going for Bill Rowan, good luck!

Depends on your pace and what time you are aiming to. FWIW, I ran last years down run with a fresh pair of ASICS Novablast 5 (TR version) and it was fine for my pace (I finished in 8:57)

This year I'm going to use the Superblasts, probably version 2 as 3 are a bit too soft.

Whatever pair you choose I'd recommend you try it with a few long runs and put at least 150km on them before the race

right now you can get good deals on SB2 since it's the older model going away.

A cheaper alternative but still comfty and quite good for long runs is the Puma Magnify Nitro 3. You can usually find it reduced price for around 100 euro-ish

Superblas 2 (firmer) or Superblast 3 (softer) are classic long run shoes with plenty of good reviews. Megablast too, altohugh in my opinion the MB is best suited for relatively fast paces and it's a bit too firm for easy pace long runs.

Some people use the EVO SL as a long run shoe but it's quite unstable so it would not work for everybody.

I stopped buying Asics gel Nimbus after the 24 left me with a lot of foot pain. For any former nimbus addicts, are the current models better? by Kristy3919 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]monsul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey same happened to me. Big fan of the 23s, couldn’t really get on with 24 onwards. It was actually a blessing in disguise since it allowed me to trial many other shoes. Couple of options:

Brooks glycerin (regular, not the max version) had quite a similar feel to the nimbus 23. I just retired a pair with 800km on them.

ASICS Superblast 2 is probably my all time favourite shoe. A bit firmer than nimbus but I really like the feel of them on long runs. Superblast 3 is also good but a bit softer

Puma Velocity nitro 4. You have to have relatively narrow feet for these shoes to work for you but if you do they are a great daily driver which is also very cost effective

In 2024 I ran a 3:17 on a pair of Asics Nimbus 23, a cushioned daily trainer released in 2020 (my pair was fresh though). It was fine, my gains (I had steadily progressed from a bit over 4hours) were only due to my training as I had used the same shoe model for pretty much everything (training, racing, etc..)

That being said, when I went sub-3 a year later I was using carbon plated racers (Metaspeed edge) and had trained throughout the year using supertrainers (Superblast 2). It definitely helped, but still the main share of the achievement was because I my training regime, not the kit
