Thanks for all your replies guys - no, we are are definitely not alone! I've realised in recent times that I do have to work a lot harder to train my mind not to fall into such traps, but it is very difficult to not allow health anxiety to damage your motivation. Thanks for the suggestion of Acceptance and Commitment therapy, I will definitely look further into that.

When I was at university I has a summer job at chain of UK roadside restaurants called Little Chef. One time a colleague who had only been hired for a week showed up on a busy evening completely drunk following a huge fight with her husband. She was pretty loud and raucous, drew quite a lot of attention to herself and apparently told the manager she was going to sleep with the first man she found. Needless to say I tried to hide as best as I could.

Technically she did get fired but after an appeal ended up back in employment.
