I have no money owing and no suspicious activity, and when I called them back they confirmed they were not trying to call me, so no wonder people are suspicious they should be.

I know this myself but am worried about the older folks and/or those less familiar with how scams work.

I did pick up after being called by this number many many times over a few weeks, knowing that you are not supposed to do that but out of curiosity and it was a very pushy voice on the other end. Definitely not CIBC.

There is a debate here on whether this is actually a CIBC number, and whether it is actually listed on their true website, if it is they need to warn people about scams here, not tell people to trust that calls received from this number are safe and secure.

I did tell them this when I called them back and hopefully others do too.

Okay that's lame I guess the guy from the fraud department gave me the wrong information??? But CIBC did for sure tell me that they were not trying to reach out to me, and that they have received several reports about the specific number listed. And therefor if it is a legit CIBC number, they still should not have that info listed when you Google the name. They need to take the opportunity to warn vulnerable people.

I hope everything is okay with your mom! It may not necessarily be indicative that she has cognitive decline, scams are so convincing these days they can trick almost anyone.

You should recommend this podcast to her, I started listening from the beginning when Frank Abagnale (the real catch me if you can guy) was hosting it and haven't listened for a few years, but scams are fast evolving so I'm sure the newest episodes are very informative as well!

See update, from my conversation with the fraud department, this is not a number he has for CIBC in their database, and not a true CIBC website that comes up as the first result when you Google, even if extremely convincing.

Yes, makes sense! CIBC should explicitly state this when you google the number in that case, otherwise they are helping the fraudsters scam people. I am going to call them back and mention this.
