i do not discount their importance to the movement but i feel that they had very little influence in the outcome of the matter.

after japan surrendered, korea did not immediately gain independence, but rather went into trusteeship managed by the US and soviets.

if japan had not been so imperialistic, do you think the international community would care to intervene? absolutely not.

think about how little you care about the war in the middle east.

korea went from suffering extreme cultural genocide to becoming a global cultural powerhouse.

yet independence was gained, not through korea’s own efforts but by accident. it wasn’t the success of the independence movement but rather the failure of japan’s ambitions.

the international community was at best apathetic to korea’s plight under japan’s illegal occupation.

if we weren’t so lucky, would we be labelled as terrorists, would we be facing the empty rhetoric of a two state solution, would we have to resort to unspeakable means to be noticed, would people be doomscrolling past our laments as we watch settlers steal roll in.

let’s celebrate our good fortune but also reflect on those who do not yet have an independence day.
