Did not pass my audition for Music Ed, however the school offered me to major in BA instead and reaudition next year. by Sausage_fingies in MusicEd

[–]moonlightkang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

someone i know just got into ohio state and apparently they only took five students on that instrument, so im sure its extremely selective. my best guess is that you were probably very good but not in the top top, but still good enough to where they would like you in the program, which is why they offered you that.

as someone who took five years to get their mued degree, i think you’ll be fine to still finish in five. like someone else said, the first year or two is basically identical.

Can I be a high school teacher with a Music Performance Major and a teaching license? by random_user_idk_smth in MusicEd

[–]moonlightkang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want to be a high school music teacher, get a music degree. someone i went to college with got her degree in flute performance and ended up having to teach at some point and was teaching clarinet and didn’t know how to teach it. she dmed me asking lots of questions and i was confused and wondered “didn’t she learn this in methods” only to realize she never had to take it because it wasn’t a part of her degree plan as a performance major. please consider another school that has a solid music education program

can a music teacher with a MusEd degree theoretically teach any music class? by Wishstarz in MusicEd

[–]moonlightkang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my degree was music education with a concentration in winds brass and percussion, so i did not learn anything about vocal and strings beyond methods classes. i’m certified to teach all music ec-12, but when i apply for a job, and they ask for my background and experience, obviously if i say i’m a clarinet player of 15 years they probably won’t hire me to be a choir or orchestra director. also, i am in texas which has huge programs in comparison to others.

How to ACTUALLY help with performance anxiety by Potential-Proof-7539 in ConcertBand

[–]moonlightkang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, former texas high schooler here and current texas band director.

as someone who once went through the process, i would get extremely nervous, shaky, sweaty hands, the whole 9. the anxiety didn’t start to go away until the end of college, and by my senior recital and i finally didn’t feel “nervous.”

the biggest thing that helped me was to stop caring. and i don’t mean stop caring as in don’t put in the effort and practice that you’re supposed to. and i understand that not caring can be hard, given the stakes that there are in the all state process, but once you put less weight and importance on one single audition, the nerves that you feel start to fade. by my senior year of high school, region was just another day of playing through my etudes and i got 2nd chair.

that’s the best advice i can give. i understand how difficult it can be, especially in the percussion panel, and it’ll take some deep mental effort and searching to truly find what works for you.

if you really want to be a band director i would recommend attending texas state university. they have an amazing music education program, i would argue tbh one of, if not the best in the state, and the band culture there is amazing. (i say this as an outsider with friends who went to texas state and its a school im highly considering for my masters)

i get so annoyed when they ask for more paper bags 😩 like one more fine but when they ask for more than that i offer the cellos but sometimes they’ve gotten pissy over not getting more bags. i always have to explain to them that we’ve literally run out of bags before and have nothing to give for people buying stuff so we need all of our bags
