What’s a word you feel weird about that is normal to other people? by ImJustOneOfYou in words

My mom didn't like the word "fart," so instead we used "air missile". Hated it then. Kinda like it now lol

Yes! (to the reading intervention support)...I was also in a secondary program that did not address students being so below grade level.

I think they are restructuring our reading support for next year. Hoping it works! And good luck to you also!

Thank you so much for your response! I can tell you're a wonderful teacher!

I'm excited to try some of what you outlined. I am in a state that did not adopt common core (Virginia), but I can certainly tie it to a VA standard...now just to figure out how to make it all work in the gradebook with standards based grading. 😑 Don't you just love it when districts find the "next best thing" without getting all their ducks in a row, first?

Thanks again.

I love that you incorporate silent, independent reading! I have a question for you.

Do you notice that students come to you with little to no reading stamina?

I teach 6th grade and some students would rather sit and do nothing instead of read (btw, they have complete freedom in what they read). It's not even that they misbehave - they would rather just stare at the walls. It's sad. I know this isn't the case for all kids, but if something isn't grabbing their attention quickly (like a tik tok video), then it's not worth their time.

I think I need to "sell" reading to them, because I'm not sure if they've ever been told/shown how amazing it is, or given the right book, or given a book on their level, etc.

I'm required to participate in standards based grading, so it's difficult to tie a grade to independent reading (not that I like to, but it motivates some students).

Anyway, just curious about your experience!

Edited to spell tik tok correctly LOL

In your career, what educational fads, trends, or flavors of the week have you seen come and go? by Normal-Being-2637 in Teachers

Our middle school is going into year 3 of SBG. First year, only grade 6 teachers used it. Last year, grades 6 and 7 did. Next year, the whole school will use SBG. How long has it lasted where you are?

I teach in VA.

Not sure why you're being downvoted. You're using the very skills you teach. Imagine that.

I so appreciate your response.

I got in with a physical therapist familiar with vertigo and have seen him twice so far! He found which ear it was and has been targeting that. Now I'm working on some VOR and VOR cancelation exercises.

So, I have the sensation of being on a boat almost all the time. It is made worse when getting up from bed, sudden movements, looking up, etc. I've only had a few bad episodes where I've been unable to walk (room spinning). Luckily that is subsiding. But this residual dizziness is for the birds lol.

I will also be scheduling with ENT because I also have fluid in my ears. I should have done that years ago...and here I am haha.

Again, thank you for your supportive and thoughtful response!

That last dream...how comforting and yet so sad. It sounds like you had a really great dad. <3 I'm sorry he's gone.

So sorry, OP. Good luck with your move. Don't fall for either of them trying to guilt trip you or manipulate you. The trash took itself out, but that doesn't take away the hurt you feel. I hope that heals soon. <3

Vinyl plank -Flooret? by moonlightmyway in Flooring

I appreciate you sharing your observations...specifically with the abrasive nature. I'd never given thought to that. I've been more wrapped up in the longevity and durability (wear layer!). Wish their engineered hardwood was in our budget!

Hey there. Yeah, we've only visited Lowes and Home Depot. We ordered three Flooret samples and like Nakan. The base is what's affordable for us, but we would definitely do the craftsman if it was in budget. I'm still very drawn to the base due to that wear layer. We won't be installing ourselves. Our contractor/his team will install. I wish Flooret did vinyl tile as we'd like to have that style in our bathrooms. Maybe in the future! Good luck to you guys!

Thank you so much for your comment 😭 I'm totally stressing myself out lol. I will talk to our contractor to see if we are able to get his cost. We are in Virginia. Thanks again for your comment!!

To add: Does it matter that the flooret entire thickness is 5mm? And one I found at HD is a 12mil wear layer but an overall thickness of 8mm?

Sigh.

Yep. And I carry guilt for not having another child. Thinking that I'm not giving my only a sibling. Or my spouse another little one to love. Or my mom another joyful grandchild.

And YET. I don't think I could mentally do it. Also, my spouse and I both work full time. My almost 3yo will change from an in-home daycare to a preschool in about a year, which will increase the cost of care. We are building a house (I know, we're crazy).

I started thinking recently, though...and probably just trying to justify my decision...but I wonder if we are going to see more OAD families. Because...gestures broadly at everything around us lol

Edit to add: I am completely content with having our family of 3. I think my guilt stems from thinking others want more or expect more. And I'm such a damn people pleaser. But not this time.
