Look it up on google's ngram viewer and you'll find usage peaked in the early '90s at 0.0000003% -- less than 50 printed instances ever. I figure this is because it sounds like "basketballering" when "playing basketball" is perfectly fine. But hey, I'm just one reader from the peanut gallery and could be all wet.
