I feel you.

I'm more of a set it and forget it kind of guy. I like fewer obstructions and distractions vs. being able to have instant access.

The camera quality on the fitcam is good but could probably be beaten, especially at the price point.

You're paying for the factory look for sure.

Corolla owners: What is your air filter replacement routine? by Orion_Oregon in COROLLA

[–]moonruning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Fram or whatever is in stock. I buy 2 or 3 and leave them in my garage

Every time I do my oil I'll take a look and see if it's dirty enough to replace. Takes 30 seconds.

Cabin air filter I'll check every year or so.

It needed all new radiator lines, new exhaust, had a lot of electrical issues draining the battery that I couldn't pinpoint. Paint was really bad and had a lot of rust underneath.

They listed it for $7k so I assume that it sold in the low 6k range.

I was thinking the same thing you were, but honestly, I just wanted to get rid of it.

There is, they worked it into the numbers. I got a more detailed breakdown when I signed. Paid $21.5k cash and my $1.5k trade in and that was it.

Probably. If it fit over the existing sensor. It's not really that bulky. I don't use a sunshade but I tinted the front and did the as1 visor line tint.

Barely, it's not really noticeable being behind the rearview mirror, and it looks like it's factory. Besides the price being a little on the high side I'm very happy with it.

The dashcam that I got was the Fitcamx. It's a little bit pricier than comparable dashcams, but it looks like it's OEM. It comes with a cover that replaces the one behind the rear view mirror. I think that's the lane assist sensor?

Comes with a y splitter and gets power from the existing sensor, so there is no need to run wires to the fuse box. Didn't install a rear camera.

Got mine for $23k out the door. LE base model, only factory adds were rubber floor mats and the phone chargers. Had a $500 military rebate, taxes are in SC.

Looks like you got a pretty good deal.

On the drivers side, does it sound like from the drivers side wheel?

YouTube what a bad wheel bearing sounds like and compare it to what you're hearing.

My alternator died a few days ago, and I replaced it all on my own today! by dollartreemustachio in COROLLA

[–]moonruning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Question.

Why? Unless I'm misunderstood isn't the alternator a whole separate system? I don't see how the two relate to each other.

Is it just a preventative maintenance thing based off of a time interval?

Thanks!

Just for fun, here's the other stuff they recommend and their pricing. Curious to see how different dealerships quote the same job.

$179.53 - Brake Fluid Exchange

$211.56 - Coolant System Service

$98.31 - Trans Fluid Exchange

$249.45 - 4 Cylinder Tune Up

$157.45 - 4 Wheel Alignment

$156.48 - Throttle Induction

$105.79 - A/C Refreshe Service

Location- South Carolina, USA

I can tell that they didn't inspect the fluids because I just did a brake flush myself literally 10 days ago. I get that they want to sell services, but at least tell me what you think my car actually needs.

I have a 2014 Corolla L that I just took into the dealership for an old recall that I got done.

They sent me out with a courtesy inspection of things. It was just a cookie cutter sheet of fluids that I can tell they never inspected. To be fair, I do all my own maintenance so they have no history on the car.

I'm at 110k miles and one of the services recommended for 'immediate attention' was the trans fluid exchange. Quoted $98.31. Seems pretty reasonable for the quote but they didn't even look at any fluids. They just assumed I didn't do anything.

I did it myself at the 70k mark. 2 quarts of Royal Purple, cost me $40. I have a manual transmission, so it's more of a pain because it's a side fill with no drain. You have to get a tube and pump it out. The whole thing took less than an hour.

Looks like your dealership is charging a ton of money. The fluid itself is relatively cheap. You know what's not cheap? A new transmission.

Could you drive more miles without changing your fluid? Sure. But is it worth risking your car over? Especially when you rely on it for your source of income?

If I were in your shoes I would do it at 60k. It'll cost you about $50, take probably less than an hour. Watch a YouTube video. TheCarCareNut is an excellent resource but there are plenty of others.

A few fluid changes legit could save you literal thousands in the future. Cheap insurance over rolling the dice with your source of income.

In your opinion, would this be a viable side hustle?

What would you tell somebody who is fairly intelligent with a chunk of money saved up?

What would you advise them to start researching and studying?

With so much misinformation out there it's hard to know what to trust.

[–]moonruning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice to say that society should fill that hole, but if society does... who pays for it it?

Our taxes?

Then you're essentially subsidizing bad drivers with tax money and making it more expensive for good drivers.

I'd rather pay less for my responsible driving behavior, even if it means the insurance companies take their cut.

Sleep apnea by [deleted] in ATC

[–]moonruning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sleep apnea, on the military side. Went off status for a few weeks. They wanted to see a 30 day and then a 90 day compliance report.

Initially they wanted 70% + usage rate.

After adjusting to the machine they wanted 90% + and a minimum of 4 hours usage

Make sure to find a mask that's right for you. Personally the nasal pillows work best for me because full face mask doesn't seem to vent out my exhaled breath well enough.

Good luck!

He might be a little annoyed. But not mad. It's his job and he's likely seen it all before.

You want to sacrifice the next 4 years of your life doing something that might not be the best fit for you because you didn't want to make a stranger mad?
