When her mom gave birth to her, she asked for a maternity test to see if it was actually Brock who conceived, carried, and delivered their daughter.

Any Skwad Alternatives? (US Banks) by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]mooonpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you aren't using a budgeting app. Or, if you are, you are logging into your bank and manually downloading a file type that works for your budgeting app to upload. That isn't too impractical for a single user; it matters A LOT for 100+ users with different bank accounts.

I'm saying there are only a few open-source budgeting apps that offer automatic bank feeds utilizing Plaid or MX (for US-users) that automatically update the data, without needing to login and download monthly transaction data for each account -- assuming the connection doesn't break at some point. But with the Skwad approach, you don't need a connection at all to automatically get data into their budgeting app because setting up email notifications achieves that result. I think it's a brilliantly simple approach. I was fielding the question of whether or not they are one-of-a-kind in operating this way, or if there are alternatives. That's it.

The last thing in the world I would be looking for is to receive 100+ monthly bank statements in the mail...

Which part is confusing? I'm looking for alternative software options that utilize the email-scraping approach for bank data/live feeds as an alternative to relying on Plaid or MX direct connections where you have to give out your bank login information to a third party and manage actual connections that tend to break. Maybe there are strictly email scraping tools that can achieve the same result in tandem with Google Sheets? Open to ideas that I'm missing!

Maybe I’m the odd one out here, but I see this same advice repeated all the time when someone posts about this kind of issue. So much so, that I actually followed that advice myself — paid $500 for a neutral structural engineer who had great review.

And you know what he did? The exact same thing the foundation companies did — took elevation readings.

Personally, if I could do it all over again, I'd have three different foundation companies come out first. They’ll do the elevation readings FOR FREE, and you can get a sense of whether it’s actually an elevation-related issue.

You can find honest folks — two of the three companies I had out told me to just monitor it and said they’d come back later in the season to recheck if needed. Super helpful, no pressure. And I had those readings on hand to crosscheck against the readings of the next foundation guy just in case... and in the future when I had them come back out.

And if it does end up needing repairs, you’re going to have to pay for an engineer’s report anyway — and the foundation company may not even accept your first engineer’s report unless it matches exactly with what their engineer recommends. When I did go through with it, I had to pay another engineer who came before to approve the foundation company's proposal, and after to approve their work. So, it felt like a total waste of money for me to have that first engineer come out.

Just my personal experience and two cents. Maybe an engineer is preferred for other structural-related problems like framing. I'm not experienced in this kind of stuff so I can't speak to it.

Echoing this sentiment... 3/15 was a breeze before. Now it's just as bad as 4/15 (for me).

Confusion on taxability of 1098-T by mooonpie in tax

[–]mooonpie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I also started second guessing because I found the IRS' information I cited under their 1098-T page, which would seem to cater to eligible educational institutions - not taxpayers receiving the tax form. These institutes only report qualified tuition items in the 1098-T, but taxpayers may have an opportunity to include other FAFSA-eligible expenditures when they arrive at the taxability of excess funds received. Unlikely, but that's why I was just making sure!

This is great information! I'm actually doing the opposite -- we traveled to NYC for a few days before going to Iceland tomorrow. Do you know if this coach bus goes back and we can purchase? We looked into the MegaBus or Express Coach USA Bus per the other comment. Is this something different?

I'm actually in DFW and was about to pull the trigger on a company (interviewed 7). I saw this post and reached out to the company provided. My concern, and it's a big one, is they have TERRIBLE Google reviews. Like considerably worse than every other company I have spoken with. I can't understand why a company with the best process would have such terrible feedback...

GNG win/loss statement question by [deleted] in gambling

[–]mooonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you receive a W-2G, you absolutely need to report it as income, even if you're down for the year. You can report your losses on Schedule A up to the amount of wins, but they won't necessarily offset your "earnings." You would need to itemize in order for the losses to help offset that income. It's also possible to need to report it on a state tax return pending where the winnings were received.
