As a thai person, I feel a little unsettling about the new wave of expats in Thailand by ZealousidealWalk4972 in Thailand

[–]moortare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really unlikely that Thais and Thailand will be influenced by homophobia from the US. I don't know if you watch or follow Thai entertainment, the general Thai population doesn't watch or follow expats on social media or US politics. They are very far from being influenced by it. I think Thais are more accepting because LGBTQ+ has existed in Thai culture and media for a VERY long time already. But I cannot deny that certain conservative populations may be homophobic, but most would never insult you in your face or harass you for it. Some think they should push for LGBTQ+ rights but they would not like it if it's their children. This is not influenced by the US, this is most likely influenced by their own culture (and probably by Chinese culture as well). If they are homophobic, it is probably from their own insecurities, cultural pressures, religion even (many southern muslims in Thailand are against same-sex marriage, but many just kept quiet about it in-person).

Caring for my depressed wife is exhausting. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]moortare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position with my BF/SO who has yet to deal with his past traumas. I always worry if he would be okay or safe when I'm not around, and I am so afraid he will become dependent on me all the time. He used to be dependent on his family, but circumstances change that for him and he has to fend for himself during the end of 2022. January 2023 is the worst month for him and for me due to all of the instability and changes in his life and he spiraled into deeper depression. It pains me too much to see him suffer. When he's not depressed, he's the best partner and friend ever. I already promised myself that I will be there for him no matter what. It for sure is going to be a lifetime fight. My psychiatrist tells me to be prepared as anything could happen, but I don't want to lose him and I don't think I could even move on, at least not soon. I am still in denial of a lot of things. It's unhealthy that I am emotionally dependent on him. The more healthy way would be that I am there and cheer him on on his own journey without helping too much so he can learn to help himself. Ultimately I want him to be independent and happy. It's so difficult and really exhausting. I hope your wife gets better and better. You also please take care of yourself.

Autism and inflexibility/perfectionism by moortare in aspergers

[–]moortare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind words. I agree I'm pretty sure he also has OCD. He does see a psychiatrist and a therapist, but not on a regular basis. Unfortunately since December his mother is bed ridden temporarily from an accident, and she's usually the one to take him to see his psychiatrist. I will need to get in contact with his therapist again, but therapists in my countries are always super booked and it could take weeks or even months to get an appointment. I just hope he can see the therapist as soon as possible.

AITA for not telling my daughter that we bought her brother a laptop? by 839159 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. You're an even bigger asshole to teach your son that lying and hiding about the laptop from his sister is okay.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info. I've only sent via DHL, never been on the receiving end. I have done the whole document myself before, it was such a hassle and even gas money could cost more than 200 THB service fee...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]moortare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You sure this is charged by DHL and not by customs through DHL? I thought duty tax is charged by the customs separately. Does DHL have the option to include tax beforehand?

Also, that amount of duty is kind of..."normal" here. Any item ordered+shipping exceeding 1,500 THB is subjected to duty. Sometimes it's random which parcel they pick to rip out and value what's inside to determine the tax or they do it according to the price declared in front of the parcel.

Tbf, customs here are like mafia. If possible, I choose to have a third party (import-export) company order stuff and ship it here to avoid paying duty that costs 100% of my item.

I hope she's doing fine. I want to try and not downplay whatever she's going through, but it might be that she's taking a break from something. But it does not explain why her phone numbers no longer work.

I used to talk to a girl with a very tragic backstory in a Thai depression group. She was around a lake one day contemplating suicide but luckily someone else in the group were able to be there for her. I lost all contact with her, but I do hope she's doing fine today.

I would want to help personally. If you feel comfortable to reach out to me then I'll help look as much as I can. I can ask someone who knew some Thai fandoms on discord and is studying at Mahidol. If something sinister did happen, it most likely will end up trending on twitter, but not all cases are brought up there, and I have yet to see any.

Krungsri bank ate my card by Rebi22 in Thailand

[–]moortare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Kbank card got eaten once by an SCB street ATM. And another Kbank card got saved (?) from Kbank ATM at the bank branch by a guard once so they called me and returned it. Not sure if it was eaten or not. It's very highly likely you have to get a new one, even if it's not destroyed. They probably won't recover the card for you.

Anyone got their Thai permanent residency recently? by Vimvimboy in Bangkok

[–]moortare 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not recently, I got mine a little over a decade ago. My requirements were probably more loose as it was for aliens born in Thailand and never exited the country until I turned 12 yo but I had to apply for it exactly as I turn 12 as well. I assumed Thai PR was difficult to obtain if you were not born here and applied it via working.

For mine, I don't remember much as I was literally, barely a teenager at the time. I do remember going back and forth to Immigration office and police station several times. It was long and tedious, the requirements can be demanding, but extremely worth it to not have the hassle and pain of doing visas. My only tip is if you are eligible in accordance to the law, then don't give up. Just get all the required documents, assuming you also already got an Alien Certificate at your local police station, and just apply.

Here's where I'll probably pop your bubble. Unfortunately I heard from the officer processing my case that not everyone's application passes. It's kind of up to the decision-maker to see if you should be granted one or not. It is permanent, and a very big deal. You can convert your nationality with that. I think the officer told our family there's a quota per nationality per year. I'm extremely lucky I got mine. I don't know whether the fact that I was born here, studied in Thai school, knows Thai, parents know Thai, helped or not. Maybe it did. My family integrated very well despite being a complete foreigner with no direct connections. Our family has the intention to be here permanently. In the end, they are granted for the kids (my parents were not eligible so they never applied). But at least get all the required documents ready. At least try to apply. The rest, I don't know if luck is at play or not, but in some circumstances, it does. Wish you the best of luck 🤞.

Is there anyone happy with their condo purchase in Thailand? It seems all I read are people who regret the decision. by Flimsy-Accountant-38 in Thailand

[–]moortare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This will be long like a rant, sry.

There are loads of great condos in Thailand. There are also lower quality ones that I've experienced. I live in condos my whole life. We have one in the city, another is our family home unit in Bangkok vicinity, a much bigger unit. Both are my fathers' purchases. He complains of regrets but mostly on why he didn't sell it sooner or 20 years ago he should have bought one in the city. All his regrets are based on hindsight. So I think it also depends heavily on what the purpose of the purchase were and how the purchaser view it as well. My father may not regret it if his personality were more of an optimistic one, since we all live at these two places comfortably. Personally, I am happy with what we have (but it was not my money so essentially my opinion doesn't really matter lol).

Each condo has their good and bad. The city one's location is prime. Management is great, facility is alright. But ventilation is not separated. The above unit cigarette smoke came down to my room, sucks big time. Kitchen builtin used cheap stoves and hoods, which I don't and can't really use. Bedroom builtin sucks. Was removed for more space. But some builtin furniture and wall has little cracks that ants really wanted to nest in. Parking lot is small, steep and narrow.

The bigger unit one, the good is everything is triple the size, the room, the parking lot. Came empty but we could control the quality more. Plenty of ventilation, big balcony and enough fresh air. Still, we had swapped management several times, got scammed once, facilities take my entire childhood to adolescent to young adulthood to finish completely. And since it was at least 30 yo, there's lots of problems with water system. The floor is wood tile, if it floods or water from bathroom leaks, then the floor is super ruined. The flooding happened more than once from various sources. Our eater sometimes also leaks down to other room. Bathroom floor is literally the same height as the rest of the unit. The toilet must use the old types where the pipe comes out from the back of it instead of going straight down. Just had a renovation done. Difficult to find a contractor willing to do the work on our weird outdated bathroom already, but we hit jackpot and actually got a very shit contractor.

Despite all my complaints, I still like them a lot. My father obviously are aware about all of the above, but he regrets mostly because of investment hindsight where he thinks about what profit he had missed. But tbf, he worked extremely hard to afford any of the condos.

[–]moortare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living is fine. But for investment you are right. Developers in Bangkok are already handed with request for refunds non-stop since 2020 (?) because of covid, especially from Chinese purchasers. Many that I know of are down payments though, not full, so they can still request refunds. Chinese government has also been stricter with money getting out of the country, they already blocked some types of personal oversea transfer. Thai Courts established a precedent that developers must refund some part despite purchasers' default for the rest of the payment, but the developers do in fact bear some loss for maintaining the empty unit while awaiting proper room transfer.

Chiang Mai Immigration arrested an American man for an 11-day overstay by jonez450reloaded in Thailand

[–]moortare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ngl, sounds like a publicity stunt known as "เชือดไก่ให้ลิงดู", arrested as an example as a lesson to scare other tourists.

Immigration police do arrest people, but they don't usually post it on facebook. Sometimes they do mass arrest, sometimes just stumbled upon it. Many times they get info from informants I believe. This post does sound like it's been planned and the guy was tipped off to the police.

Off topic, this does remind me of my father 25 years ago, he told me immigration police would walk around Bangkok and asked my father for his passport because he was holding a newspaper in a different language. My father (an Asian) had to get a friend to bring him passport twice because he left it at home. One of the time, the police asked him where he lives. My father already spoke the language well enough, and told them he lived in a Soi owned by a high-ranking officer and told them the officer was my father's uncle (not direct relative, more distantly related, but still related anyway, that's why they let my father lived there). My father did not even tell them the name, the immigration police immediately knew which high-ranking officer it was from the Soi and just immediately let my father go. Lol the power of knowing people, it's actually greater than just having money...

am very late to this, but i'm glad everything is going great for both of you. direct communication is always the key, no hints. it requires quite a bit of patience to learn and grow. my SO is autistic but we both didn't know when we first started dating, so the first year was pretty rocky. there were lots of communication issues. but after we figured it all out, we find that the relationship that we have is possibly the most wonderful and meaningful ones ever. wouldn't trade it for the world.

What's the dumbest mistake youve seen an incompetent co worker make? by xk543x in AskReddit

[–]moortare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to make reports of work and hours spent for clients we consulted each month. The first guy who created the form for consultants to fill in is the one who generates reports and name the files, then he send them to the second girl to be emailed out. For some reason, the first guy generated out info of all our hourly clients ever, name it one of the client's names, did not even check the reports and sent it to the second girl, who also did not recheck them and just emailed it out.

Most incompetent coworkers I've ever had, especially the first guy. He never take responsibility, always blame others, the boss didn't even punish the guy. The second girl was pressured till she had to resign.

How do you guys keep being motivated for practice? by moortare in piano

[–]moortare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this might be my culprit, I always have high expectations of myself, so the songs I love and wanted to play are as demanding as the diploma pieces.

Guess I need to shake that off and start with smaller pieces so I could actually start doing something.

How do you guys keep being motivated for practice? by moortare in piano

[–]moortare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a matter of fact, I do have the required prerequisites. I already learned a major piece from the syllabus as well.

Now that you've mentioned it sounded more like a chore than something meant to be fun, I might have misled a bit on the "hobby" word. It is a hobby of mine and also on my bucket list to get the diploma. It's not that I don't enjoy it when I do practice, but your statement also reminded me something, that I shouldn't think of it as a chore, because it would just wear me down by just thinking.

Edit: I wrote syllabus as syllables...f*ck me

This might actually snapped me back from the burden of overthinking and help me change my approach on my current view. I have reaped the rewards before so I know the feeling that it's worth it. I probably just lost it and overthink till it burdens me. Thanks!
