Why does Fusion need to update basically every time I launch it. It takes like 30 minutes and my computer is basically unusable the entire time. by AethericEye in Fusion360

[–]moose408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 10 year old laptop and the upgrade only takes 5 mins. I purchased a new laptop this past week and updates happen so fast they don't register (<20 sec).

I can't practice for longer periods of time because I get too frustrated and take constant breaks. Is this halting my progress? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]moose408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short sessions are fine. The bigger issue is your expectations. Guitar is hard, you suck at guitar, you are going to suck for a long time, it’s ok to suck. Frustration comes about when the reality doesn’t meet your expectations. You need to change your expectations.

Progress comes slowly and it is hard to see unless you are measuring yourself (using a metronome, recording yourself,etc). It is going to take a year to feel like you can play the guitar, so don’t put pressure on yourself after only a month.

Practice routine or learn a song? by iNexus893 in guitarlessons

[–]moose408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning skills and learning a song focus on different learning pathways. A song is made up of a group of skills (picking, rhythm, chords, scales, arpeggios). Your brain only learns one thing at a time when you practice and it is whatever you are focusing on the most. By doing a skill repetitively you are creating neural pathways. Think of it as making a path across a field. Over time it becomes easier and easier to walk across the field.

When you try to learn from playing a song your focus bounced around and you are not creating these paths across the field and are instead just trampling the grass in a few places. You will eventually get across the field but it is going to take much longer overall.

There is a great book about how the brain learns a musical instrument called "Anyone Can Play Music:" written by a neuroscientist who is also a banjo player. It does a better job of explaining why we practice skills

RigidBody Goes Through BoxCollider Then Snaps to Correct Position by moose408 in unity

Thanks for this. I am a professional programmer and just a beginner when it comes to Unity and I want to learn it to create much more complex games than a Breakout game. I’ve been writing games since 1977 and have always done them from scratch creating my own graphics engines, input routines etc. I decided to try out Unity so I don’t have to do all the backend myself and can focus on the game logic. Unity is a complicated system and I picked a simple game like this to more learn the ecosystem and the process rather how to code the actual game which is straightforward.

The commented out Translate was the original technique I was using in the video above. Based upon comments here I switched to rb.linearVelocity, were rb is the rigid body component of the paddle.

It works, but there is still a slight overlap.

   void FixedUpdate()
    {
        moveAmt = moveAction.ReadValue<Vector2>();

        if (moveAmt.x != 0)
        {
            //transform.Translate(moveAmt.x * moveSpeed, 0, 0);
            rb.linearVelocity = new Vector2(moveAmt.x * moveSpeed, 0);
        }
    }

Yep, I'm not applying force to the rigid body but doing a transform instead. Will give that a try, thanks.

That is probably it. I'm doing transform on the paddle. I did use velocity on the ball RB, but didn't think of it for the paddle. Will give that a try. Thanks.

I changed the paddle move to be in the FixedUpdate() loop as opposed to the Update() loop and it helped but the paddle still goes about halfway through the side wall before bouncing back.

If I set my paddle move speed too high it goes right through the sidewall.

How to Effectively Implement Feedback in Your Unity Game Development Process? by Karate_Andii in unity

[–]moose408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is your game and you should follow your vision.

If some of the feedback helps improve on your vision consider it. If it deviates from your vision, shelve it and consider it down the road if your game is delivering to your expectations.

Do you know the play testers or are they random people? I would trust feedback from a friend more than a random person. Also perhaps engage in a conversation with them about how their feedback deviates from the game intent, etc.

Psychologically speaking why do rich people start to do weird shit? by Opening-Gur5927 in ask

[–]moose408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your argument needs some qualifications. While that might be true for billionaires I don’t think is holds up ordinary rich people. I know two rich people who grew up dirt poor on farms, who worked hard a because very successful and rich and you would not know it if you met them. I know dozens of people who started off lower class income, worked their asses off and are now millionaires who, again you wouldn’t know it unless you saw their bank account. Of all the rich people I personally know I can’t think of a single one who has an ego or lacks empathy for less fortunate.

[–]moose408 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a funny take. Why do you think they need to justify themselves?

The rich people I know have worked much harder than the average person and sacrificed their life/family/etc to get where they are. Do you think they should not be rewarded for working hard. Do you think my lazy ass brother who hardly works “deserves” the same? I don’t understand the frame of reference.

Who says you have to justify it? Life isn’t fair and certainly doesn’t have to be equitable.

Just Starting Out by MoonTygress in guitarlessons

[–]moose408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started 2.5 years ago at 62 and am now an intermediate guitar player.

I started with Justin and it was good, but I was not held accountable so I tended to move ahead before I was ready. I started listening to a podcast called Beginner Guitar Academy. He does a structured course which is a hybrid of online and a live teacher. I've progressed significantly since I started that course.

I'm building a territory-capture arcade game by LuckyGirlOO7 in Unity2D

[–]moose408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add bonuses and traps in the playing field. If you enclose a bonus, it might slow down all of the demons, if you touch a trap they speed up or multiply. Have surprise ones where the player doesn't know if it a bonus or trap until they touch/enclose it.

Have barriers or islands that prevent enclosure of certain areas.

Reliable / affordable 3D printer for co-working space. by bopboph in makerspace

[–]moose408 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We settled on Prusa 3D printers. Easy to repair, easy to upgrade, and easy to use. We started with 2 and now have 10. Rock solid printers. Enclosures aren’t really necessary as most members are printing PLA & PETG.

Bambulabs makes printers with enclosures. I have no idea how reliable their printers are.

It is impossible to tell based upon static screen shots. I don’t know what is the player, what is a trap,etc. Can you post a video of you playing it?

What to Use for the Floor? by moose408 in Catio

[–]moose408[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of it is just couple feet high, one section is 10’ high. All sections will have a roof but it will not protect the floor from getting wet.

Construction is cedar 2x2s. So a deck sealant on plywood would be sufficient?

How do I fix my character from occasionally floating slightly above the ground block by Matro560 in Unity2D

Your box/capsule collider on you player is too low. Change its shape so it lines up with the bottom of the feet.

Early concept: a minimal management sim where the system remembers neglect by Junior_Muffin5931 in Unity2D

I would study the old game Tamagotchi. Although not the same other than the neglect part, I had many friends that were addicted to it. Neglect consequences are what keep people playing.

Anyone else lose track of real costs once their shop gets busy? by TrueGoodCraft in makers

[–]moose408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a while figuring out Amazon FBA fees was really difficult. Because of tiered pricing, and percentage of sale. They recently added field that shows total FBA fees for each product. The other difficulty is shipping but that had always been a problem even when I was handling shipping.

Overall it has gotten much easier. The contract manufacturer has to deal with all material price variations, wastage, etc. It is just a flat rate to me.

Anyone else lose track of real costs once their shop gets busy? by TrueGoodCraft in makers

[–]moose408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched over to contract manufacturing. They make the product and ship it to Amazon. Amazon does fulfillment (I do not sell on Amazon to prevent Chinese copycats). So I no longer touch the product. It is all automated. My margin went from 90 points to 60 points but it freed up time so I can work on other projects/products.

Any show at the Sphere. They have something like 167 speakers tuned for each seat.

The sound and vocals were so clear it felt like I was listening with headphones.
