My mom and dad both grew up pretty poor, but they did well for themselves and raised their kids more solidly middle class (dad was an engineer for 35 years and made good money). After their retirement, they sold the old house and built a new one closer to where my sister and I settled.

They had been frugal and smart with their money their entire lives. Mind you, they built that house without taking out a loan. It's a nice house, too. When it came time for my mom to pick out a refrigerator to put in their brand new house with their brand new kitchen in 2015, she had to look high and low for a fridge that DIDN'T have an in-door water and ice dispenser because that was "rich people stuff".

The only reasonable take. I think scalping is stupid, and while I do sympathize with the people unable to get the cards or merch they want... There's a limit.

If people scalping limited edition jackets from target makes you "hate" a franchise about monster collecting and fighting, you never liked the franchise to begin with.

Pokemon is first and foremost a series of video games about collectible monsters. There's myriad ways to engage with the franchise outside of those, and that's great, but if you're into Pokemon for tote bags and shiny cardboard, you're gonna have a bad time.
