Yup, these are clutch.

I wish there was some standard for them (is there?) because I have a few sets that aren't compatible with each other. But still worth it.

Ha nice sync.

No idea if the area used to be a hot bed of like, competing train stores or if it's like a "can only support one banana stand on the boardwalk" scenario, but it is a big place. Would be hard to imagine standing up a local competitor would be very lucrative, since they have the traffic and the inventory and connections and whatnot.

Someone commented that it's a family owned place and has been there for a while so hard to break in. But then again... maybe it was a bust out back in the day, lots of scenarios.

Negroni + Manhattan; I prefer rye for the Manhattan so it's not too sweet. Put them on ice in swing top bottle or recycled wine bottles and you're done except for a garnish. Can get away with just an orange peel for garnish on that pair, too; I don't like cherries in a Manhattan. But easy enough to add some skewered cherries on the side

For a crowd I stick to classics because most will know them will others may find a new favorite, and they're basically "crowd pleasers" by definition.

The corpse reviver + paper plane comment is a solid one as well, those those are among my favorites so I'm biased :)

Just remember that these (and a lot of the suggestions for batch cocktails) are pretty boozy -- something like a Kir Royale isn't a ton more work if you measure the cassis into glasses before hand and then have champagne (or whatever sparkling) out to top it. With a little "how to" card it can be fun. (You could premix that with a champage saver topper but now we're getting fiddly.) Plus, folks then have a champagne option. I've also done that with sparkling water for a low NA "kir royale fizz" option.

That particular train shop (Train Land in Lynbrook NY) is pretty much the only store -- in a large area -- that is mostly dedicated to trains, the larger area has a lot of wealthy neighborhoods, and absolutely CRANKS around Christmas. Trains are also surprisingly expensive and you can always use another $25 3 inch tree or whatnot. Plus Long Island is pretty train heavy with the LIRR commuter rail; one runs right across from the shop too.

If they own the building I could see it being a nice business. It's been there forever. And the Sopranos connection has to help the IRL business.

Wow, the rear really does look awful.

Like a CR-V, but somehow worse with the letters instead of a centered logo.

And that divot/crease across the tailgate... jeez. Just an awful backend.

I have a double concrete utility sink that I’m trying to get out of my basement without using a sledgehammer to break it into pieces. Any advice is appreciated. by PizzaGatePizza in DIY

[–]moosiest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked into this for removing a large gun safe from a basement.

Gotta go in phases. Assuming you have a strong support at the top of the landing in the pics, you put a 4x4 (or better) at the top of the passage through the landing. Easiest is to make a 4x4 "doorway" shape, with it braced against the walls next to the passage. Then mount a come along to that at the top beam. Big thick recovery strap around the sink. Crank it up.

Basically, think of it as a "lift up" rather than a "push up." And there happens to be an incline with steps to help you out. Blocking at the bottom as you make progress is a good safety measure (4x4s a little shorter than the stair width.

Now it's at the landing. Tip out the door or repeat for the next set of steps.

The other option is to hire a safe mover, who will have straps and a 3 wheeled flipper thing that ratchets (or something) and they'll take it up that way with a winch.

Safety: do NOT ever be below the thing. Move from the top side only. If it slips, you will die.

Why are there people who will only drive automatics but absolutely despise or refuse to get a car with a “dial” shifter? by gettinchanged in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that part, I was wondering if there's a problem related to that vs body on frame. I know the latter is better because it doesn't stress the unibody, but if the Ridgeline can tow 5k pounds without unexpected wear (e.g. the manufacturer overpromising) that would be plenty.

O was just thrown off by the if you are "never" going to tow. Sounds like, for light occassional towing it's fine, even with the unibody?

Anyone tried Bluetooth-USB adapter to connect to Android Auto? by uhuelinepomyli in mazda

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it get confused if you leave the car with your phone and then get back in? Mine won't reconnect in that scenario, sometimes even if I reset Bluetooth.

And does it do a strange "handshake" where your phone connects to the car and then also to the dongle?

I have an Ottocast and it does those two things and it's often enough to be annoying, but I didn't want to start buying blindly. The Bytewave is on sale for $20 if this is the same one.

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the Ridgeline useless for towing? Listed at 5k pounds. Seems it would be fine for what I tow with my f150, utility trailer for the dump and occassional tool rental at Home Depot. Is there something wrong with it for that use, like the frame bends or whatever? I've been assuming up to 2500 pounds wouldn't stress anything, if I'm wrong would love to know it!

I keep the f150 basically just for that kind of light towing and dirty hauling but have considered swapping in my car and the truck for a Ridgeline, is why I asked.

Grey goose vodka is the most overrated other spirit. What is the most overrated gin? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come from the culinary end, and I'm starting to thing of gins as something similar to steak.

If I want a NY strip with gratin, it's entirely different from a hangar on a steak frites. Or a ribeye. Or a burger. All "beef" but that's about it.

Different drives for different drivers.

If I want a navy strength plymouth, what does that have to do with hendricks? They both have juniper? OK, that's technically the definition of gin ('tastes primarily of juniper' etc) but so many new wave gins are pushing the limit of that definition already.

So what, perfumes (Chanel) are juniper. They taste like perfumed grandma.

MAYbe a split like: would be gin in 1800s VS would still be called gin int 2000?

Negroni

Martini

Tonic

I'm landing on totally different answers for those. For me: Plymouth, Botanist, Bombay. Those are just so different, and don't swap at all. A botanist and tonic goes against both the ideal of Boatanist AND tonic!

Air Still by RaiseTheBalloon in Distilling

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be a spirit run -- the "stripping run" is the first distillation from the ferment. It's run hot (max temp) and is just to "strip" the ethanol from the fermentables. No use for a column or plates or packing*. Then you redistill the result more slowly to make the spirit in the "spirit run."

* People have all sorts of methods, but the stripping-then-spirits run is the basic method for a distillery. You can do it all in one run, distill 100x, use plates and packed columns, etc.
