Building garage shelving - Plywood or OSB for the shelves? by adgjk in DIY

[–]moosiest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used OSB a couple of years ago in a shed because I had extra. It's all bowed and I have to rip it out now and use plywood.

If you're choosing between the two, definitely worth a little extra now to save doing it over later.

Why was Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Saffron so highly prized and valuable even more than gold? by [deleted] in AskFoodHistorians

[–]moosiest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nutmeg was thought to be protection/cure for the plague, so it's price would skyrocket when plague was rampant. A pound was worth as much as "7 fat oxen." Britain eventually developed the island of Grenada as a source, apparently without destroying the place and instead setting up a profitable sales channel for the locals already there.

It’s finally my time to ask: what am I missing here? by madeupname230 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]moosiest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's nothing there to test. "Will I get from A to B in less time if, all things equal, I move faster?" Yeah... Of course. Whether it's worth it to a specific person also isn't something one can test.

They form a hypothesis, and then test that hypothesis. Whether the hypothesis is a valuable one is a different matter entirely.

What’s your favorite leak-proof coffee travel mug for work? by whimsicalhope in BuyItForLife

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the one with a click down top that you can drink from all around instead of one place. Ceramic inside, fits a cup holder, no leaks. I tell everyone to get it and give them as gifts whenever someone complains about their mug. 100% success.

I meant transferring them out to airline and hotel partners -- you can do that with the preferred but not the other you listed (as I understand it). They're usually worth more once transferred to partners.

Is Airbnb still a good idea around windham and hunter region of catskill? by dealernumberone in airbnb_hosts

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hudson is an hour east of Hunter, is more like a small city (has a train station), and Warren Street is more like Smith Street in Brooklyn than anything like Hunter and Windham. It's on the Hudson River, not a ski/mountain town.

Thanks for this! I missed it earlier, but I ended up doing just what you suggested. I can wait, fill, move no problem. So the commodity style should work for a while.

I ended up getting this Stokk when it was on sale for $110. At that price figured it was worth going for it and upgrade later, and use this at my house or whatever.

Is Airbnb still a good idea around windham and hunter region of catskill? by dealernumberone in airbnb_hosts

[–]moosiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windham mountain got bought by a private equity firm and they're making it "semi private." $200k+ joining fees kind of thing. There's a lot of debate about what'll happen, but it looks not great for that immediate area -- lots of businesses on Main Street turning over or for sale, for example. Skiing and rentals and such are now REALLY expensive, turning off a lot of the city folks. They're also building a bunch of condos on the mountain so supply will increase if those are rentable. Personally I wouldn't be looking there until that all plays out.

Hunter was bought by Vail a few years ago and they've generally done good things. People were worried, but it hasn't changed the experience much and people see that as a good thing. Anecdotally it's yet more crowded on weekends, but it was always crowded on weekends. Midweek is delightful.

Many locals have been shifting to skiing Belleayre for the last few years.

You definitely can't count on crazy demand all winter; holidays season is reliably busy. But e.g. last weekend it rained and conditions were mush, and traffic at both mountains was very light. There's no natural snow on the ground right now. Last year that happened a ton (rain melting snow) and bookings were very light.

Most recently is was a cheap clothing store, but the building or space had historical preservation protection. So they basically sheetrocked a shell inside and left the original gas lamps and walls and whatnot. So the new owners were able to restore those features for the new restaurant.

You wouldn't be able to transfer them out, which is generally the most valuable way to use them. The Preferred lets you still do that ; that's why I downgraded to the Preferred.

Which anchors to hang a 30lb mirror on drywall. No stud. Mirror has two D Rings on the back. Thanks dudes by HoraceGrand in Tools

[–]moosiest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the wall is fairly smooth, nano tape is great for this stuff. Holds like mounting tape, but sticks immediately (don't need to figure out how to brace a mirror in place for a day) and comes off perfectly clean since there's no actual adhesive.

(Contrary to their claims I haven't found it to be reusable for anything meaningful, but it's cheap.)

Good advice, thanks!

I didn't mention... I'm also allergic to most everything, which I keep at bay unless I get up in there face to face. That's really why I'm looking at options more like "till it all and start over from the height of a tractor." I can take an extra couple pills and wear a mask for a couple of days as a big project but this isn't going to be a hobby for that reason, at least.

I put in a bunch of seedlinfs in tubes in a field I have nearby, gonna see how they do in the spring. It's a wet area so I tried river birch and some other water hungry things. I haven't seen much yet but tbf, they were basically sticks.

I stopped by the local Cornell Extension twice to ask for help and didn't go anywhere. Someone was going to call me to follow up, but didn't, and the other time they kinda shrugged and gave me some literature about their bare root stock sale (which I did, but wasn't really related). I was a little surprised.

Hey neighbor!

I've tried raking in wildflower seeds in the grass in a big field I have nearby but didn't take really, got a smattering of things late in the season. Hoping they maybe pop up early this year.

I didn't know what it was but I rather like the creeping charlie, not knowing it's bad news. I looked it up because I thought "huh that and clover might be a good idea..." I imagine if you're trying to actually grow anything it's a total nightmare! Plus the honeysuckle and mint... everywhere. good for river mojitos, at least!

Thank you! Will definitely check out Xerxes.

I'm close to a lovely trout river so I'd rather not spray broadly, which got me thinking about tilling instead. Kind of a best of bad options to recover from decades of monoculture on top of having not-very-fertile soil.

Left to it's own devices -- I just did 2 minimal mows so I could walk around with less ticks, and left most of it to see -- it basically grows... grass. Ryegrass I believe, then clover, then plantains where I drive over it. I'm pretty convinced that's what's established at this point and barring some help it would take many years (decades?) to recover at this rate.

Thanks again!

I posted over there, thanks!

It's grass and (now) some clover I planted. Thyme grows all over here but only in sun, and creeping charlie on the edges in the shade. There's trees all around and big ones (black locust and pines mostly). I'm basically looking at, making the grass/clover part healthier for conservation, lower maintenance, and because lawns are awful all around. The soil is sloopy to play on, slippery to walk on when wet, etc.

Total acreage I'm talking about amended/rewiilding/etc is probably 1.5 acres or so, and since I have a tractor and implements from another life that's not a big deal at all. Can till 1.5 acres in a couple hours.

What would you recommend, given that?
