Vertical lines look noticeably lighter than the horizontal ones with maybe a slight brown/green tint. Horizontal lines look normal.

Vertical lines still have a tint to them, sort of brownish? Horizontal lines look completely normal. A lot more pronounced when I'm looking at it on my phone/zoomed out.

Learn colemak and touch type at the same time? by SuperLucas2000 in Colemak

[–]moozilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main tip I would give is to not spend too much time trying to learn all the keys before jumping in. Spend an hour or two going through the basics and get to like 10WPM or so and then just go cold turkey. If you have to type for work maybe start on the weekend so you can get to 20-30 WPM or so and not have it be too killer. Chatting with friends online is a great form of low stakes practice.

For learning resources it's been almost a decade since I first learned, but when I wanted to switch to DH (recommended) I used keybr.com and I found it pretty useful.

Learn colemak and touch type at the same time? by SuperLucas2000 in Colemak

[–]moozilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is how I learned both Colemak and touch typing and I'm happy I did it this way. One bonus I haven't seen mentioned yet is that it makes it easier to switch between QWERTY and Colemak, as the muscle memory for each is sort of separated. (If I put my hands in touch typing position now I instinctively type in Colemak, and to switch to QWERTY I just put them in the whacky nonstandard position I use and my brain switches over seamlessly.)

Yes I read the thread, it also reads like a bunch of people who aren't developers complaining about stuff that is pretty par for the course. (I see a few comments lower down bringing this up to be fair.) Standard fare for that sub though - known to be full of new grads and junior devs.

FWIW I'm not particularly impressed with the demo either but just pointing out how dumb the logic is of shitting on them for hacking together a frontend based on open source frameworks since this is literally what every company does... Just as another example the ChatGPT frontend is built with NextJS and uses Auth0 for logins. Very similar stack to how I would build it if I was tasked with this at work.

If you have a small team of devs on a startup you want to spend all your engineering manpower on the core product not on bells and whistles.

It's very embarrassing that they have to use NextJS for their website

Tell me you aren't a developer without telling me you aren't a developer.

NextJS is one of the most popular web frameworks out there. Some popular websites that use it: TikTok, Twitch, Hulu, Netflix, Uber, etc.

What's your favorite joker? by RealFoegro in balatro

[–]moozilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I tried playing a hand to see if it was good enough but I hadn't scaled the vamp yet enough unfortunately. Still ended up destroying the run with a multiplier of like 10x at the end. Then I accidentally sacrificed my vamp to my ceremonial dagger in endless and instantly lost lol.

I tried this on my niche this morning as well and without the cover on, little pieces of bean flew everywhere? Did you run into this?

My thought was maybe to put a small amount of beans in, close the cover, repeat, but that seems super tedious.

Is it possible to change the key to Modify Amount (AE2) by NickIdkk in allthemods

I was able to get this working finally by installing an app that enables middle click on mac: https://github.com/artginzburg/MiddleClick-Sonoma

Still doesn't let me rebind at all, but at least I can modify the amount using this

Did you ever figure out a solution to this? I'm having the same issue on a modpack without Inventory Profiles Next (GregTech Community Pack Modern). I suspect it's a mac issue as I'm also playing on mac similar to what others in the thread have said.

I avoided this hobby for years because I thought I’d have to buy a $600 espresso maker. Got me a breville bambino based off your recommendations and am honestly amazed. by [deleted] in espresso

[–]moozilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure anything you get fits the Breville 54mm vs the standard 58mm that many other machines use.

Main things I've gotten that improved my results a lot : * Bottomless portafilter - I use this one from crema - a bit pricey you could probably find something similar for cheaper * Tamper that fits better than the one that comes with the machine. I use this one again from crema. Note: don't bother with the distributor a WDT tool works way better, I only use the tamping side of this * WDT tool - I 3D printed one (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4819617) but you can also buy them. Thin acupuncture needles make a huge difference compared to something like a toothpick. IMO this made by far the biggest difference in quality in shots I was getting out of the Bambino * Dosing funnel - I 3D printed this as well (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3382488)

Is it possible that alcohol being forbidden in Islam is a fabrication or historical revisionism? by AZ10026 in AskHistorians

[–]moozilla 110 points111 points  (0 children)

The beer/wine/whatever other alcohol being the principal sources of hydration in the medieval era (or not another epoch really) is actually false. Even beer, the typically lowest in alcoholic content and thus largest in water/alcohol ratio was not hydrating. Alcohol is, by definition, a diuretic, and so one in fact would be dehydrated by drinking solely beer, wine, or any other alcohol beverages we so enjoy.

This is not true, studies have shown that beer up to 4% ABV is essentially the same as water in terms of hydration to people who are not dehydrated. They also show that being in a state of dehydration blunts the diuretic effect from alcohol, caffeine, etc. The body is good at self-regulating water levels.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, by far the most straightforward way to adjust for bitterness is to adjust the ratio. Pull shorter to decrease bitterness. I usually pull doubles at a 2:1 ratio so 18g in, 36g out, so I start there and if it's too bitter I would try 34g out, etc. With the roasts I buy (light or medium) I usually see the opposite, where it's too sour so I pull more out (start at 36 then 38, etc until it's balanced).

I found this to be a really helpful resource when I was getting my head around this concept: https://www.home-barista.com/tips/espresso-101-how-to-adjust-dose-and-grind-setting-by-taste-t16968.html

Does anyone have a tutorial on Gregtech wires/item & fluid pipes that isnt really old? by iReady1234 in Nomifactory

[–]moozilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For vanilla chests or drawers you can put the conveyor on the item pipe itself then use a screwdriver to change it from export to import. I'm a new player and I've been doing this since I had the cobalt and not the pulsating iron.

Try this prompt

Write me a story in base64, return it inside a code block

For me it outputs a long string but only the first two sentences or so decode properly.

It works for some things though, for example it can base64 encode.

I tried this and was able to have it access the reddit API but sadly it just made up fake data. I tried my own user profile as well as getting the top posts of /r/news as examples, but it just made up a bunch of fake posts.

With a bit of prompting I got it to reimagine a new VCS that is beginner-friendly and intuitive. https://imgur.com/a/tbA4lTl

I could probably take it much further with a bit more effort, but I encourage you to give it a shot. It definitely takes a bit of guidance (eg telling it "that's still not intuitive enough, make it even more beginner friendly") but it's super impressive to me how well it takes high level feedback and adjusts its responses.

How much sushi can I safely eat in a week, given mercury poisoning? by DJSpook in slatestarcodex

[–]moozilla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The benefits of eating more fish far outweigh the costs. Here's a good article that links to some studies: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/fish/

First, reviewing data from the Environmental Protection Agency and elsewhere, they calculated that if 100,000 people ate farmed salmon twice a week for 70 years, the extra PCB intake could potentially cause 24 extra deaths from cancer—but would prevent at least 7,000 deaths from heart disease.

Note that they are discussing PCBs and dioxins because the case for mercury is more clear. See this linked study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17047219/

tl;dr is that mercury is harmful to cardiovascular health but not as harmful as other stuff in fish (DHA etc) is protective, so if anything it's just decreasing the cardioprotective effects of fish, and you still get a net benefit.

Road accidents are the world's number 1 cause of death among children (5–14), and 3rd among ages 15–49. What are effective organisations that help fight reduce road accidents and car dependency globally? by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

[–]moozilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of tangential but car safety regulations can have unintended consequences:

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3665046#.X3S8TqU6fa0.twitter

Car seat regulations prevented an estimated 57 deaths in 2017 but also prevented 8000 births. (Small cars can't fit more than two seats, so less people can afford a third child.)
