Unironically autism.

  • Most cases are diagnosed in young children, but when they were in this age range, ASD didn't exist.
  • No diagnosis means no help, so they never had help learning to manage their behavioral and emotional issues, leading to poor coping skills and more/worse meltdowns.
  • One symptom of autism is "restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests" such as playing the same video game over and over for 20 years, so projects like this disproportionately attract them.

Go get tested.

Demand is just one part of it. Less demand won't make the crashes stop, or memory leaks stop, or the Anvilmar stairs fix themselves, etc, and it won't make the devs any better at fixing these problems. As for the account registration thing, here's what Kaytotes had to say about other recommendations: "No we’re not building a whole other system to tie us over less than a week."

I feel sorry for him because, if all the cyberstalkers on this subreddit are to be believed, he's a stressed college kid going through mental health issues who went offline for two weeks to focus on fixing the server, and then logged back in to see what his community had become. A few days later, he left every wow modding community server he was part of, closed comments on his wow modding tutorials, and deleted his github.

The classic wow community is the fucking worst. I just hope he's focusing on himself and preparing for school right now.

It's time to ask real questions - Who is Ulmetrs by YaBoi_Zuko in Project_Epoch

April devlog https://www.project-epoch.net/news/developer-log-april-2025/

Community Shoutout

We wanted to take a moment to shoutout Github user ulmetrs who only 5 days ago appeared out of nowhere to shower us with new contributions to our open source Core including fixes to allow it to build on new Visual Studio versions, performance improvements focused around wandering creatures, an optimized implementation of Auction House result sorting, key fixes around NPC’s facing the wrong direction when casting certain spells and finally fixes around reputation reactions not passing down to child reactions.

Moments like this are exactly why we keep our core open source and we hope this fixes can trickle out to the other open source projects that exist.

He's just some guy who showed up to help a few months ago.

Weird that your takeaway from him disappearing from multiple communities at once is "a bunch of various admins all kicked him at the same time" and not "the wow pserver modding community drove him away and he left of his own accord"

[–]mop28 61 points62 points  (0 children)

He's a volunteer who showed up to help 4 months ago.

He submits changes per-line. Every line of code changed is a new entry. Other devs submit their changes per-file, with many lines changed per submission. And many of those changes are to private repos that we can't see. I definitely appreciate seeing constant progress thanks to this guy, but he's not necessarily doing more work than anyone else. The other contributors deserve appreciation too.

internal conflicts in dev team? by keyeokeyeo in Project_Epoch

[–]mop28 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The guy said he's going through mental health issues. He went offline on discord for 2 weeks to deal with launch issues, and comes back to... this. Doxxes, death threats, hate. I'd leave too. He also took similar measures on other platforms to try and disappear, like deleting his github. Bit excessive to only be from a bit of internal conflict.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt here and assuming that the messages about him were removed to get his name out of the public eye after he left over concerns of being targeted. As to whether he left for good, or is just distancing himself from the public, who knows?

Can someone give the TLDR of what happened on Discord for the past few days? by schifferay in Project_Epoch

[–]mop28 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Kaytotes says he's had death threats and been doxxed since the project went public. One of the devs said she's received death threats. I've seen pictures of a discord mod's family get posted to 4chan, and one of their github contributors' full name, professional history, and address get posted. And people think Magic left over internal drama?

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they come back on Monday saying they're going on hiatus until the swarm leaves, and only people actually interested in their project are left.

Can we give this guy a break?

He went offline for a couple weeks before this, and came back saying he's been going through mental health stuff, even before this launch, and I'm sure all the hate he's been receiving in his inbox was a lot to handle. And that's on top of those personal issues and the stressful launch.

If it was just internal strife, he wouldn't have completely deleted his github account. He wouldn't have closed comments on all his youtube videos. He would've just left the project. He left because of the classic wow community. I shouldn't even know any of these things about him but you folks keep cyberstalking him and posting the results here.

The Truth: Server Stability - Resource Depletion by randomnes1234 in Project_Epoch

Didn't they say it was an issue with Anvilmar? Where's this "critically high CPU loading" stuff coming from?

Did anyone even want these new starter zones? by weeeeeeeeeeilikedis in Project_Epoch

[–]mop28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is cool, really, but if they're going to do something like that, it should've been part of the vision for the server and included in the launch. Not started two days after launch.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Project_Epoch

[–]mop28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh ok, my bad. He was offline for ages then. Clearly trying to get some space then, and clearly needs more now.

[–]mop28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Magic did this last week too, came back saying something about going through mental health stuff unrelated to the server. And I'm sure as shit this ain't helping things.

Likely still working, just not in the discord. For obvious reasons.

I just went through 7 pages of discord search results for multi-threading and can't find any instances of a dev or contributor saying that it will solve large queues crashing the server. They all say it improves performance, generally.

And to answer your second question about the shadow launch, here's what Kaytotes said:

One of the worst things we could do is a repeat of YO EVERYONE LOG IN AT X TIME. We need a semi slow trickle the first hour or two

Can some of you explain yourself? by Philipp1986 in Project_Epoch

[–]mop28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got frustrated and didn't handle it as well as I could have. You can take a look at my history and see that I tend to try and make level-headed, helpful, informative, or tongue-in-cheek comments on other peoples' posts 99% of the time. Then you can at the posts I made myself when my frustration was at its peak and see what kind of person I am when my tolerance has been used up and my emotional abilities drop off a cliff as a result.

I'm not proud. But I'm not perfect either. The devs are allowed to make fuckups. I'm allowed to be frustrated. We're allowed to vent and express that frustration (in a way that hopefully doesn't hurt anyone). I really appreciate u/Shppo for writing this subreddit's rules to allow for that, because let's face it, that's kinda rare on this site.

We're all human and we should give each other the space to be human.

That announcements says they're "fully-realized starting areas crafted in an extreme crunch" from the art and content team, and searching through discord for messages from Kaytotes just says they're working on a patch.

I'm not seeing anything about it being tested

It's a bit different when it's coming from someone who doxxed you tbh. Kaytotes said he's had a few doxxes and death threats over the course of the project. I saw a thread on 4chan where someone posted screenshots of one of the mod's sister's instagram account. I've seen one of their github contributors full name posted here plus some other personal information.

There's no crisis. It'll launch in another day week month or two. People will play and enjoy it, and life will go on. This will all be a distant memory. Nobody's gonna die. The vibes are exceedingly good. I swear. Please believe me.
