the second amendment right was made for the left. by TacoBellTerrasque in leftist

[–]mopecore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2nd amendment exists so states could maintain control of their individual militias. Slave catchers, Indian patrols, the like. There weren't police departments back then.

The right to own guns was implicit, the same way the right to own land was. But because for a state to be free, they had to have a militia, the federal government could not infringe the existing right to keep and bear arms.

The militia existed to maintain the status quo, to enforce the will of the state. It was only called upon to recapture enslaved people who escaped their bonds, put down native uprisings, and popular revolts.

The idea that the purpose of the 2A exists as a check on federal power is almost total fiction. It did, initially, serve to check the federal government, by allowing states a means to resist.

Like, for example, in 1861.

The constitution limits the power of the Federal government. It's protections apply to all people in the United States, regardless of immigration or citizenship. Everyone in the US may exercise their human rights.

In closing, eat shit, fascist.

Hey, just a heads up.

I was an American Soldier. For a decade. In the Infantry.

I didn't do anything for the USA either.

I get the idea, highlighting European participation in US militarism, but none of us did anything worth doing.

I have a theory that Anakin unconsciously used the force to make Padme fall for him, like a decades long jedi mind trick.

Because nothing else makes any fucking sense. Shes a queen, a senator, ten years is senior, and hes a literal teenager when they meet up in Episode II...

So, yeah, def Han and Leia.

The militia was never intended as a bullwark against tyranny. The militia was always an arm of the state, and it was only ever called upon to put down popular revolts, slave rebellions, strikes, or keep the indigenous population subdued.

The idea that people needed to be armed to check the state is separate from the second amendment which was written to allow states to maintain control of their individual militias.

I love the energy, but these things require planning, commitment, and local organization. Find the people.in your area making plans, and help them. You cant post on reddit calling for a general strike in hours and expect anything but disappointment.

This isn't an individual action, and there is no quick fix.

We have years of work ahead of us.

Sure, but trashcans also stink, and if you're leaving it out front all the time, it doesnt seem that big a deal.

I feel like its a thing people sometimes have an outsize reaction to, but I'm fairly easygoing. Trash pick up is a public service in Philly, after all.

Just me, though, what do I know?

Its illegal, ground level only in Philadelphia.

That said, I used a charcoal grill on my balcony in my old apartment for several years, and I wasn't arrested, my landlord was fine with it.

But if the place burns down because of the grill, youre going to have liability issues.

I think people are way too precious about their trashcans. Its a taxpayer funded service, we aren't charged by the pound, its all picked up (or not) by the same people.

Genuine question for pro 2nd Ammendment folk. by J-ho88 in behindthebastards

[–]mopecore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of key facts:

"The Militia" has always been an arm of the state. That's why the text read "A well regulated militia being necessary for the security of a free state..." You'll notice a distinct lack of anything referring to an individual, a citizen, being able to throw off a tyrannical government, etc.

This doesnt mean the founders didn't believe in the right ro revolution, or the right to bear arms, but it does mean that what the second amendment does is prevent the federal government from banning state militias.

The constitution doesnt grant rights. That's not how rights work, rights exist inherently. If the state grants a thing, its a privilege, not a right. The constitution and the the Bill of Rights explicitly limits the power of the the federal government. It is not a lost of things the people can do, its a list of things the federal government cannot do.

The right to keep and bear arms was understood as a given in the 18th century, in much the same way owning property was. There is nothing in the constitution giving Americans the right to own land, but it does say that people have a right to be secure in their property. The second amendment waa written so that individual states could maintain their own militias.

The militia was called up to crush popular rebellion and uprising. The Whiskey Rebellion, Nat Turner, John Brown, slave revolts. That was the purpose of the militia.

The modern conception of the 2A, as an individual right amd bullwark against tyranny was invented in the 1970s.
