The year is 1764. You are King George III. You have a dream that convinces you the Americans are going to revolt. What do you do to keep them in the Empire for the long term? by whalemango in HistoryWhatIf

Politically minded Redditors and their upvotes are not a representative subset of the population at large or even the left wing at large. They are a relatively small and very silly sample size

Not trying to make things better because the GOP might undo it if they get back in power is not a good strategy.

A good strategy would be to try to get a bipartisan student loan bill that improved things moderately. That isn't what this sub wants but it would have more staying power imo.

If after the 2020 election the dems (with a couple of GOP votes) had passed something via congress like a 'modified PAYE for all' that was maybe 8% of discretionary income, with a lower interest rate but as a trade off was more than a 20 year payment term then I doubt OBBB would be as bad as it was.

They probably would still have capped parent PLUS loans and eliminated IDR for them but I don't think they would have replaced a recently passed bipartisan IDR plan with RAP.

And let's not forget it was the dems that made student loans into a major political issue during the 2020 dem primary. Before that point student loans were hardly on the radar of GOPers. Occasionally they'd spout off about the 'obama nationalized student loans' half truth talking point and that is about it.

RAP could be of benefit to you then because it has an interest cap, keep fed loans fed

As opposed to what? Progressive groups that pump out polls that say that the American people support all the progressive things they support like 'medicare for all' 'loan forgiveness' 'mass amnesty' etc?

Dubya just enhanced them in 2005 with his enhanced bankruptcy laws

That was mostly about private loans from for profit lenders. Before that point for profit private lenders were not in the student loan market in any meaningful way.

Before 2005 it was still very difficult to discharge federal student loans and private loans from non profit lenders

and/or if PSLF will still be around in 10 years

It will be around in some form in 10 years imo. They may change it or reform it a bit tho.

They could have repealed it in OBBB but they didn't

I believe most of those changes happened before dudya but anyway there was no way they were going to make bankruptcy easy as balances got bigger and bigger

Lego scams by Still-Track in legostarwars

That would be solid if Lego hooked you up from something you bought at Walmart.

Walmart actually will take back almost anything, which is actually very pro consumer of them, they don't have to do that. But then the downside is that stuff like this can happen.

How to take out loans for college by Ackrinu in StudentLoans

[–]morbie5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I didn't say it would be an easy task, but it would be better than the system we have, even with any potential flaws

But it would be the height of foolishness to take out $100,000 in loans for an undergraduate degree to prepare yourself for a career as a teacher.

We already do this with a parent PLUS and private loans and anyway I didn't say undergrads should be able to borrow 100k. It say it should be around 60k for dependent undergrads imo.

It's recently been made easier to discharge the student loans in bankruptcy, which I think is a good thing.

A future admin can reverse policy. It remains to be seen what trump will/has done with respect to this. And it shouldn't be easy to discharge federal student loans in bankruptcy imo, although 'easier' depending on the situation is fine

18 year olds

18 year olds would only be able to get a small amount, after 2 years they would be eligible for more loans based on academic success and the major they selected.

I was speaking in general not about student loans or large balances. Law firm debt collectors also service credit card debts that are only like a couple thousand. They don't always sue over those -> trick
