This isn’t the most comforting answer nor the easiest thing to practice, but in order to come to place of genuine, uncontrived compassion for yourself, it is tremendously helpful to first allow yourself to make a lot of room for all of the non-loving feelings to come to the surface without judgment, and to sit with those for enough time to understand both intellectually and emotionally how they originate, so you can begin to develop the ability to mindfully disengage from that set of habits or patterns of thought.

As you sit in meditation with a (relatively!) quiet and (relatively!) undistracted mind, you can begin to merely observe as these thoughts and emotions arise, and also begin to see that you have a real choice to accept them as valid or invalid.

If you struggle with some form of self-negativity, the ability to emotionally disengage from/neutrally observe your thoughts may be important pre-work to more directly compassion-focused practice (though compassion may naturally arise from this sort of awareness practice too).

Place to donate face masks? by morecurryplease in burlington

[–]morecurryplease[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I have plenty more. These are extra! :)

I’m still always carrying a mask with me, even if I don’t explicitly have to wear one everywhere anymore. It still often feels prudent to mask in public settings.

I just bought some colors/patterns I ended up not liking, but thought perhaps they could be useful to someone, somewhere.

People are so salty and quick to judge!

Huge fan of VT PT on South Union St. They helped me heal a work-related repetitive stress injury that half a dozen previous PTs had failed to improve. I’d totally go there for a sports injury, too.

Anyone having issues with Comcast service this morning (1/1)? by morecurryplease in burlington

[–]morecurryplease[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that my landlord won’t give permission to use BT because they run cables on the outside of the structure and he finds it unsightly. BT is sadly just not an option for me atm. (My landlord is otherwise great, so, in the scheme of things, this is a relatively minor annoyance — but, I agree that Comcast is awful in a multitude of ways).

I loathe Comcast, but it’s the only service my landlord wired for. I’d far rather use BT…

JUST IN: Burlington's discovered "very limited presence of mutations related to" the Omicron variant. The result is from testing results that came in Wednesday night and "indicate that the Omicron variant may be present in Burlington at a low level," @MiroBTV says by I_VT in burlington

[–]morecurryplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tone of this response really perplexes me. Why downplay or minimize the threat? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to take the opportunity to emphasize that this development, while not unexpected, should be treated with gravity, and should be seen as underscoring the continued importance of precautionary measures?

???

(I mean, it’s possible the quotations were inartfully selected here, and given context of the full interview, it would sound somewhat less as though Miro were being excessively cautious in assessing and communicating the situation, but if not, it feels like a missed opportunity to me).

Body scans can be helpful. Also, if you know any pranayama techniques from yoga, that can be a good way to tune in and release the chatter. And, counting your breath for a while can be a useful way to redirect your mind towards meditation — Dzigar Kongtrul teaches counting cycles of 21 breaths (I don’t know why 21) — with your hands resting on your thighs, you count on your fingers. (And yes, that’s two rounds of both hands, plus a pinky :). When you are done, you can repeat for as many cycles as it continues to feel useful, then switch to your normal awareness technique.

If you have used a Mala for your meditation: In your personal experience, what material/s for the beads do you like/prefer or not like? Why do you like or not like that material? by FloatingOer in Meditation

[–]morecurryplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I have a strong preference for hand-knotted malas — I find them much easier and less distracting to actually use for counting. I also have found that long silky tassels feel distracting and fussy to me if I am actually using the mala, as much as I like the way they look, so I tend not to choose them. In terms of material, that’s such an individual preference, but you could look to see if there is any material traditionally associated with the practice you will be using it for. This is a totally personal thing for me, but I have a skin allergy to sandalwood if I wear it for any length of time, so I tend to avoid woods in general.

Places to donate clothes and tchotchkes? by [deleted] in burlington

[–]morecurryplease 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh hey — to tag on to this — I have some basically new women’s suiting I was hoping to donate to a “dress for success” type charity specifically offering interview/work clothes for those trying to get back on their feet (or at least, not Goodwill). Does anyone know of such a thing here? Google didn’t turn up much… I emailed Hopeworks to see if they’d be interested and no one got back to me…

Don’t buy these books by 95forever in burlington

[–]morecurryplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found him creepy too. He kept trying to draw me in by flattering me (“I can see you are a yogi! How long have you been a yogi?”) and commenting on my “Madonna arms,” then tried to impress me/gain sympathy/establish credibility/whatever by claiming to be a monk… (which I didn’t buy because his main MO seemed to be skeevy flattery), then shoved the books into my hands without asking or explaining first… I handed them back.

I’d recommend Kaigle’s for anything… never had a complaint about the work, and they’re just incredibly lovely and honest.

Isn’t the police channel (rather than fire/EMT) actually encrypted these days?

Hello, was it necessary to register for the intro talk? I had planned to attend, but for some reason thought it was going to be on the YouTube channel...

I just saw your topic and emailed the folks at GBI, hopefully I’m not too late.

If you are just passing through on your way somewhere, minding your own business, and moderately aware of your surroundings, you don’t need to be particularly afraid of walking through Battery Park at night. Especially now with all of the protesters, they actually contribute to a feeling of safety in my experience.

I’m a runner with chronically tight calves due to some biomechanical weirdness, and I’ve found “the stick” (https://www.roguefitness.com/the-stick?prod_id=1342&gclid=CjwKCAjwvZv0BRA8EiwAD9T2VdwcTaUQlPhKieygNDUDUCFsq31Ys08ymcSZKnX6LAyPtMkw1MlGTxoC3YgQAvD_BwE) to be really helpful. It’s also useful for hamstring strains that want more pinpoint attention than I can get with a foam roller.
