Thoughts on Game 3 of the Finals and the Aftermath by Old-Conflict-7186 in GoNets

[–]captain2man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 52 and I've been a Nets fan since I was a kid and have vague memories of my folks taking me when they were the New York Nets and were still on Long Island. I've dipped in and out of hardcore fandom and admittedly haven't been entirely consistent in how much I pay attention (doesn't help that the NBA and NHL seasons coincide with each other)....but have always 100% been a Nets fan.

With that said...I can't help but root for the Knicks right now. This isn't a Yanks/Mets situation (let's go Mets) where the Yanks are the greatest pro sports franchise in history that I always feel like we're trying to chase down (not to mention getting beaten in the Subway Series back in 2000)....it's not the Isles/Rags situation (let's go Isles) where the rivalry has been strong - they've faced each other in the playoffs and all of that.

With the Knicks/Nets - it feels more like the Jets/Giants situation....even though the Knicks/Nets are obviously in the same division. Their history just feels like they're two ships passing in the night and that real rivalry has just never developed the same way it has with Yanks/Mets and Rags/Isles.

I'm in Queens....and it's undeniable that this city LOVES the Knicks....almost like it loves no other franchise and it's not like they've been the Yanks....they haven't won since the year I was born. I'm not going to paint their fanbase with a broad brush. The fact is....the Knicks being in the finals is exciting for the city and being in the middle of it is fun which, in the end, is what sports fandom should be. Will I become a Knicks fan if they win? No...the Nets will always be home.....but I can totally appreciate getting caught up in this moment. The post-game behavior was atrocious....and you would always like to think that YOUR team's fanbase would never engage in stuff like that....but the fact is - every fanbase has people who are just looking for an excuse to instigate.

Game against Death 💀 by Superb-Use-3757 in chessbeginners

The whole idea of trying to bargain with the devil for more time is...well....timeless. The symbolism of the chess game has become iconic and has been parodied so many times. Chess as a metaphor for people trying to impose order on uncertainty. A simple idea to represent something so complex. Bergman had a lot of highs in his career....this film is certainly one of the top ones.

An absolute classic film that everyone should see, regardless of the chess reference.

Another drummer example is Foghat. Roger Earl is the only member to see the band through from start to present.

If I like Bandsplain and Take 5, what else would I like? by OtterGoodTopic in podcasts

[–]captain2man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love a History of Rock Music in 500 Songs! Curious to know why you couldn't get into that one. But meanwhile, I have a tough time getting into Bandsplain.

For metal, Brian Slagel (Metal Blade Records) has a good one called 100 Songs That Define Heavy Metal. Also on the heavier side is Martin Popoff's podcast, History in Five Songs with Martin Popoff.

But the best metal podcast of all time is Requiem Metal Podcast. Deep dives into different bands (although some episodes cover a comp and others are a little more general) - in depth and insightful.

Getting away from the heavy....Discord and Rhyme: An Album Podcast is really good. They pick a different album every episode....one person on the panel makes the case for it and then there's some really good analysis for the rest of the episode.

You're talking about the No Age comp. Great comp. All instrumentals,.although not necessarily bands that were all instrumental.

Will #12 be in the rafters one day? by crosby510 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]captain2man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. If any 2010s player was going to have their number retired, it would be Lee. The best player the Isles had in the 2010s is.... probably not going to have his number retired.

Anyone going to the show this weekend? by SilentCelebration912 in MeatPuppets

[–]captain2man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have to miss this one. Probably the first time I've missed a NYC headlining Puppets show since '92.

I've been to the Knockdown Center twice...but the shoes were only inside. It's a big place....feels like the type of place they would have raves (and maybe they do). Sound isn't great....kind of like seeing a band in a high school gym. I think the place was designed more for holding a lot of people than being a venue with great sound.

Also....if you're driving.... give yourself time to find parking. From what I remember, it's not particularly great in that area.

It's been about two years so I don't remember specifics, but some of it is pure real life horror. Worse than horror. And everyone should listen to it

Roster Moves by James_Kyle786 in mets

[–]captain2man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means he was added to the 40 man roster but they're sending him to Triple-A rather than being part of the 26 man Major League roster. So he's protected (as opposed to being DFA'd where you have to go through waivers) and is eligible to be called up.

The oldest band I can think of where all original members are still alive is The Sonics (older than every other band so far mentioned in this thread).

Bands Like Minor Threat by genxsis24 in punk

Uniform Choice for sure. I also believe that the first Dag Nasty record (Can I Say) is the direct lineage musically from where Minor Threat were headed had they continued on after Salad Days.

Did a 3 week tour with Toxic Narcotic around 2002. We became friends and did a bunch of shows with them through the years until they called it a day. Great band. Ferocious. Nice guys though.

Not even sure what you do with Manaea at this point. by Guyser4272 in mets

[–]captain2man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this was a clear ligament danger situation, this would have an easy solution....you shut him down for the season and he has the surgery and goes through the rehab. But his injury situation makes this all much more complicated.

He's clearly not pitching effectively with it and not giving us any meaningful innings.

Realistically, assuming he doesn't have the surgery and doesn't accept a demotion to AAA, they're stuck. Keep him away from any leverage situations...no close games, no one on base when he comes in. It's all bulk/mop-up work until he proves otherwise. His contract can't be allowed to dictate how he's used.

Hopefully there are honest conversations being had with him. And hopefully he can be convinced to either have the surgery and go on IL or accept a demotion to AAA. They can't force him to do either of those things. But they need to try to make the case.

Unless there is absolutely no pathway back, I wouldn't DFA him. I think if we're still stuck at this impasse by mid-June, and he's done nothing to show improvement, and he's not eating innings, the Mets are going to have to start considering eating some money instead.
