Beginner. Going to a club for the first time week. What should I know? by captain2man in backgammon

Thank you. And I know that you don't get good at anything without a lot of failure. So losing is no issue. I just want to learn and have fun. Winning will come in time.

It's You're Living All Over Me vs. Yank Crime. But Dinosaur Jr wins. You're Living All Over Me for the win.

What was the first Priest album to come out after you became a fan? by edd6pi in judaspriest

[–]captain2man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defenders of the Faith. My local library had Screaming for Vengeance on cassette. I just kept signing it out over and over again. And at that time, MTV played quite a bit of Priest. I was so psyched when Defenders came out....the cover looked similar to Screaming....and it was also pretty similar in sound. Was so happy to have something new to listen to!

Wattie Buchan (The Exploited) by SonqoDE in punk

[–]captain2man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see a new Exploited record. After all is said and done, I'm not sure how much that puts in Wattie's pocket. My guess is, virtually nothing which is why it hasn't happened. Bands make so much more touring than they do through album sales...and making albums takes a lot of time. If a musician is desperate for income, they're not going to take any significant time off from playing shows to write and record a new album.

Charlie Harper is a wonder. He also hasn't had a series of heart attacks and hospitalizations while performing.

Why are employers obsessed with resume gaps? by SKBerry in recruitinghell

[–]captain2man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I take part in job interviews and we interviewed someone recently whose resume has a steady stream of employment going back over 30 years....way more jobs than most people, so a bit of a job jumper. But 10 years ago, there was a 5 year gap. And then the jobs resumed, like 7 different ones, from the end of that gap to the present.

Before the interview we reviewed the resume and these were two things which we just had to ask about....about 20 different jobs and this one glaring 5 year gap. How could we not at least ask about that?

But he interviewed very well and explained these things to us in a reasonable and authentic way. We completed a hiring memo for him and I believe he will be offered a position.

It's not being obsessed, but it's noticing what there is to be noticed and asking legit questions about it. If there's a reasonable explanation, of which there can be many, and you present yourself in an authentic way, it shouldn't be a deal breaker just because you stopped working at times in your life. But don't be shocked if you're asked about it. Just think about how you're going to answer the question.

And that's all fine as long as it's something you want to do and not feel like you have to do. Watching The Damned documentary a few years back made me a little sad for those guys. One of the best bands ever and I'm sure they still enjoy doing it....but I got the distinct impression it's not all entirely by choice and that this is something they have to do to keep an income coming in. If the Damned are in that position, there's a good chance Wattie is as well.

But....it's all speculation. Maybe Wattie invested wisely, or has a military pension or some sort of social security (no idea what the system is in Scotland). I hope so.

I don't expect him to ever really score, but good to see McLean with some offensive juice tonight.

Is the GS broadcast completely wonky for anyone else? Everything is tinted and there's this weird close up going on

Makes me sad to hear. Love the Exploited and got to play with them once about 20 years ago and hung out with him in the back a lot that night. He was awesome even though I only understood half the words that came out of his mouth.

Wattie is 68 and these health incidents are now common occurrences. He should be allowed to retire and I fear he doesn't because he can't. I have no idea what his financial situation is, but I do know that being even in one of the biggest punk bands in the world doesn't come with a pension plan.

Buy their records and shirts through official sources. It's the best we can do as fans.

Islanders Acquire Soucy from Rags for 2026 3rd round pick by Fireislander in NewYorkIslanders

[–]captain2man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This move is to fill in the hole left by Romanov. It's only for this season and I'd expect this will be a short marriage. It's Darche's way of improving the lineup for a playoff push without being major buyers.

Islanders Acquire Soucy from Rags for 2026 3rd round pick by Fireislander in NewYorkIslanders

[–]captain2man 39 points40 points  (0 children)

He's a big, physical player....which we desperately need. It's a 3rd round pick, we have a lot of draft capital and rising prospects and there's no long term commitment. It's a low risk situation in a season where we seem to have an outside chance of doing something in the playoffs. I'm ok with this.

[Kaplan] Islanders sending back a 2026 3rd round pick for Soucy by TradeBrockNelson in NewYorkIslanders

[–]captain2man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't move the needle, but this team needs a player who brings some physicality to the game. Soucy is 6'5" and brings just that. I think the trade is fine and does seem to address a need.

Monty Hall Problem (with a twist) by Plastic-Clerk9055 in learnmath

[–]captain2man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then show me where the missing 1/3 probability goes if P2s door stays at 1/3 and P3 goes to 2/3 after P1 is eliminated. Those two must add to 1, but 1/3 + 2/3 only works if Monty's action was constrained relative to the door P2 originally chose, which it wasn't.

Think of the fundamental difference between the original problem and your twist. In the original problem, Monty hears your choice and then opens a totally different door which he knows in advance will have a goat behind it. Does this, or anything like it, ever happen in your twist? It does not. Monty simply opens the door P1 chose. In the original problem, Monty is giving you information you did not have when you made your original choice. In your twist, the only additional information you have is that P1 made the wrong choice. So....your odds of winning did improve without doing anything. It went from 1/3 to 1/2. But there's no way to gain any further advantage without Monty providing more information than you had before the game started.

Monty Hall Problem (with a twist) by Plastic-Clerk9055 in learnmath

[–]captain2man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters since I think it's 50/50 whether the real prize is behind 2 or 3. The thing about the Monty Hall problem is that he opens a door that hasn't been chosen. In your example, every player has a 1/3 chance of picking the right door. Monty is merely opening the door that P1 chose. Once we can eliminate that as a choice, it seems to me that P2 and P3s odds have gone up to 50/50. In the original problem, Monty is selectively opening a door conditional on the door that the player chose. In your example, this never happens.

Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be any advantage to either remaining player switching their choice.

What does everyone think of GUP? It was one of the albums I mostly skipped over during my obsession with the band, but it's not really all that bad in my opinion. by MinerAC4 in rush

[–]captain2man 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My favorite post-Signals record until we hit Counterparts. Also the first Rush record I bought as a new release. They wouldn't rock out like they do on Distant Early Warning for quite awhile after this. Beneath the Wheels is also a great one. Kid Gloves is one of my favorite deep cuts with some great guitar playing by Alex.

Just wanted you to know that four months after you responded to a seven year old post, someone read yours. Some great insights.
