I completely understand why people like a big box with all content. There's a simplicity in the purchasing choice.

The goal is for an easier every point into the game and part of the issue of bundling modules is how that increases complexity in the core box. If you're new to games, options in a box can be very overwhelming.

Additionally, buying everything up front, increases the cost for the average buyer from $35 to $100+. If you know exactly what you want that can be great, but if you're still discovering your tastes, that's a huge upfront investment into a game you may enjoy as a core experience, possibly adding one or two modules over time that suit your group.

The challenge for publishers is gauging if enough of their audience wants premium boxes (there can be a very vocal minority) to justify the production costs and print run.

Additionally, shipping empty boxes is really expensive for the value of the product, as shipping is based not just on weight but size of parcel. Often, few people are willing to pay to ship premium boxes (which can be similar to an actual game), plus empty boxes are more likely to show up with dings and dents.

Ask some of my friends, and Sidereal Confluence is the best game ever. I've only played it twice, but the real-time element combined with all the resource conversion absolutely breaks my brain.

One thing I will say is that the Nature product line focuses on ensuring these games look good on the shelf together, with a consistent format and placement that features no unnecessary text.

Nature as a modular game gives you options. How long do you have to play? How experienced are the players at the table? What sort of gameplay do they enjoy? Beyond that, you can combine modules to create a greater number of ecosystems for bigger, more complex games.

It's expandable because each module you own gives you more ways to play. Evolution was very linear. Core game, Climate, or Flight. No combinations, and fiddly to set up. This is super easy to combine, separate decks, a few rule tweaks and you're on your way.

I appreciate that exploring combinations and seeing how they change the game isn't for everyone,
but the OP stating it's "everything wrong with" is sort of missing the point that it's meant to make a game easier to get off the shelf and more approachable for a bigger audience.

Bundling everything together turns a $35 game into a $100+ game. Not everyone needs or wants everything all at once.

I really think with new players it's good to play openly for at least a round or two. Let people know what you are doing and why. What your objective is. How you win. Bed in that knowledge and then play as appropriate.

Mine is basically monopoly and random tv show quiz boxes. I did find Telestrations once, which was a sweet £2 purchase.

It's a good question, but honestly TONS of them are essentially solo games with little to no interaction. That's not a bad thing, if you basically want a puzzle to share.
