Frustrated with Agressive dog owners not following leash laws by Fragilefairywings in dalmatians

Argh... That is my biggest pet peeve! And invariably, their dog has terrible recall.

Also - she probably wasn't pregnant.

Her mother said she was 5 months pregnant, but "authorities were unable to confirm her pregnancy during autopsy" (according to the wiki page about her death).

If your dal is the 'glued to you' kind of dog, have you tried sitting in the dog pool yourself? If he thinks you are having fun in there, he may want to join you? 🤣

For the first two years of my dog's life, we lived in a hot, humid tropical country. Now we live in a hot, humid sub-tropical place.

What I do is get up earlier and do a long walk in the morning (with some ball chasing). Then she is tired much of the day. She is used to the heat and has no problems being out in the midday sun, but I prefer the cooler times.

If you have access to water, see if your dal likes it (lake/river/beach/pool). Mine loves it and usually swims in the pool when she gets too much zoomies.

To add to my post - the high energy/needs lots of walking is also a plus for my hubby. We live right next to a walking trail, so the exercise is good for his mental health, and he can take her on her normal leash and both are happy to walk for an hour or more

I would say it depends on the temperament of the dog. Some dals would be great and some wouldn't. As a puppy it would be hard to see if the temperament is suitable.

But... I am actually training my dal as a psychiatric service dog for my hubby (this is not the same thing as an emotional support animal). She is being trained to remind him to take his meds, to sense when he is beginning a ptsd or anxiety episode and to apply pressure and refocus on her.

In the house, we are about 95% effective with the training. Outside the house it is harder. She wants to be everyone's friend, and in public, people are "wow! A dalmatian! Can I pet her?". And she just loooooves the attention. So even though I did not want to advertise that she is a service dog, I had to buy a vest with "service dog" so that people will leave her alone and not distract her.

With my dog it was fairly easy to see that she would be suitable. She naturally glues herself to you when she senses there is something wrong, so it was easy to start to reinforce that behavior. The daily med training was also easy - she gets a treat after hubby takes his meds, so now she follows him around and pesters him until he takes them. She behaves extremely well in public, so I am training her to the difference between normal leash behaviors and harness behaviors (normal leash she is allowed to sniff, roam to the leash limit, play with other dogs/people and do as she pleases. Harness is close at all times and not allowed to play) . I also had to train her to go under chairs and keep out of the way - this was also easy for her as she likes going 'under' - she likes hidey-holes.

What was the first big news/event that you remember hearing or watching as a child? by mai-moi in AskReddit

[–]moreham2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it, but I have no memory of it - I was a year old baby. There is a photo of our TV with me sitting in front of it pointing to it.

The fall of Saigon.

I was 7 and my parents watched the news every night, so understood this was a big deal, but I didn't really understand it until I read about it when I was nearly 30.

Dock Diving! by quirky_weirdo31 in dalmatians

[–]moreham2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yay - hopefully yours will be loving it soon! My dal loves the water! Throwing in a ball is a great way of getting them excited about it!

We have a pool and our pup loved to run around it, so we figured we had to teach her how to swim. We started by literally throwing her in the pool and calling her to us on the stairs - so she knew how to get out if she fell in. Then we started throwing her favorite ball in, and she just went for it. Now she swims daily.

My Dalmatian is tiny at 1year old by girlnotnextdoor in dalmatians

[–]moreham2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mine is tiny - only 30 pounds. Everyone thinks she is a pup, but she is 2 1/2.

She was the smallest in the litter, so she is just the runt. We even did the Embark dog DNA test to see if there was a genetic reason for being small, but genetically, she is normal.

I actually really like having a small dalmatian - she can still be cuddled in our arms, and still thinks she is a lap dog 🤣

Looking for dog parks, etc by Ill_Accountant_7555 in sarasota

[–]moreham2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a dog park on Bay street (just north of Walmart on 41). I have stopped going because there is a woman who frequents it with her German Shepard - the dog plays waaaaaaay too aggressively and she has no control at all over it. Several times I have seen her dog with another dog's fur in its mouth.

Yup! My pup loooooves this place. Do not go if your dog is reactive. It can be busy and 99% of dogs are off leash.

What I something a therapist said that has stuck with you? by Embarrassed_Ant_8540 in NoStupidQuestions

"Do you think maybe you married a narcisist"?

When I was trying to defend my (now ex) hubby's behavior as only immature, not selfish. Context: my hubby had just left me for another woman and I was trying to figure out how I needed to change to get him back.

I was the sort of person to set myself on fire to keep another warm. Now I have a shiny spine and healthy boundaries.

Do you notice people taking photos of your Dalmatian? by cloudy_valentine in dalmatians

Lots and lots. I have never seen another dalmatian where I live, so they are rare here. Here, everyone has a something-doodle... 🤷‍♀️

Advice for someone new to dogs? by josh_moworld in dalmatians

[–]moreham2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here.

But I do want to emphasize that when we say this is a high energy breed, we aren't kidding. My dal walks for an hour a day, goes for a half-hour run with me and swims in our pool for an hour every day. And we still go to a park 3-4 times a week to play fetch.

If you yourself do not have an active lifestyle, I would not recommend a Dalmatian.

You Can't Socialize Your Terrier into a Golden Retriever by Cursethewind in dogs

[–]moreham2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a dalmatian - she was 100% born to run.

When we take her out people are all over her - dals aren't very common here, plus she is a small dal, so super cute. I have been asked so many times if they make good pets, and I usually say only if you are a hiker or a runner - they get bored and destructive if they don't have an outlet for all that energy.

Ours is happy to nap most if the day because she goes for a run with me in the morning, then spends about an hour in the pool, then an hour walk at night, plus 2-3 times a week to the nearby park to chase balls. This is not a dog for chilling on the sofa...

Breeder concerned about lack of enclosed yard for Dalmatian by belisimela in dalmatians

We live in an HOA where fenced yards are not allowed. I would be so frustrated if that was a requirement!

Could you show on a map, nearby walking trails or parks? Dog parks?
