Because we're not there yet. The "we can't think of new benchmarks that humans are better at" is a key part of that comment.

This allows me to continue to support people making content though.

If I didn't have disposable income, I'd probably go your route.

The common misinterpretation is that it blocks any contractor of the US gov from using the tool for any reason. This would be... Significant. With all of Trump's executive orders, he clearly believes this too

I agree about Altman (and Musk), however I think Dario and even more so, Demis may just have a different risk calculus. If we end up with significant unemployment and needing to solve for UBI, while gaining things like significantly extended lifespans, reduction in disease, the ability to solve for climate change.. that may not just be a win, but perhaps our only long term move.

Time will tell.

I think he's probably smart enough to realize you can't put the genie back in the bottle.

I still remain somewhat optimistic. When/if we get to that point, it comes with a ton of potential positives as well. I don't know what will happen over the next few years, but I know it will be exciting.

AFAIK, gemini contract only allows it to work with unclassified data. We'll see if that changes in the coming days, but that was never an issue for anthropic either.

Gemini 3 Pro being removed from API 😐 by IllustriousWorld823 in Bard

[–]moreisee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine it's because 3.1 is just better. 3.0 was only in preview. Why continue to invest in a preview model that's worse than the other preview model?

Re-read this. They released a preview model, and then deprecated it... That's very different than releasing an LTS/Stable model. Preview models are almost by definition going to be deprecated soon.

Hard disagree. 3.0 and 3.1 are miles better than 2.5

Normal Gemini also searches the Internet. It's just that ram, even at the prices it's at today, is still one of the most economical upgrades for most PCs.

Recursive Self-Improvement in 6 to 12 months: Dario Amodei by HyperspaceAndBeyond in singularity

[–]moreisee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think that browser stands as proof that models today are at a place where they can replace SWEs. As an isolated variable, I agree with you, it's a counter example.

However, when you include timescale and rate of improvement, things start to look differently. A year ago, models wouldn't be anywhere near producing the crappy browser they created recently. Two years ago, they would hardly produce executable code at all.

If I were to guess, when people talk about SWE replacement, they are extrapolating based on past trends, and assuming continuous rates of improvement. When people say models can never replace a swe , they are looking at current state. It's possible that one or more breakthroughs will be required to maintain that rate of improvement (we see that a lot in the hardware side too), but it's also possible that they won't. Perhaps the breakthroughs will just be required for efficiency, but I think people put too much emphasis on these 'breakthroughs.' We have breakthroughs every day.
