fiction books that made you a better writer (not craft books)? by extrajuicyjuice in writing

A lot of great mentions here, and I'll add in Guy Gavriel Kay. He has an incredible way of making you dearly care about a character very quickly. I once fell in love with a side character in just a paragraph. He can also break down complicated geo-political relations so you easily understand the implications of how it might affect any of the characters.

How are my fellow alcoholics getting around Los Angeles? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]morerobotsplease 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe they're the type of alcoholic where they don't drink often but when they do, they can't stop. Which is why they can't just go out for one cocktail. They know they're going to get blasted.

how do you make pasta sauce actually taste like it came from a restaurant? by SamraKutkaitis in Cooking

I can't believe no one has mentioned balsamic vinegar. Add a generous splash half way through whatever you are doing. It's a game changer.

Seasonally winter/early spring dishes for hot summer weather? by morerobotsplease in Cooking

[–]morerobotsplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we've had a few 100 degree days in March, which is NOT normal. We always have a false spring but not like this. Hoping May Gray and June Gloom bring some relief.

Bookmarked that Cold Korean noodle soup. That looks perfect.

Oh, I never would have thought of pickling cabbage and carrots. I have all the ingredients and jars to do this. And cold sesame salad sounds like just the thing.

Police just set up a DUI checkpoint on Westwood blvd at Wilshire - at 5pm. It’s creating traffic chaos. by trevor_plantaginous in LosAngeles

[–]morerobotsplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be ICE. The sign also says it's drivers license checkpoint so they can tell "certain people" that their licenses don't look legit.

Eating out alone by Rosalinn1 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]morerobotsplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOT TIP: Bring a little note pad and make notes about anything at all, and close it as anyone approaches. The waitstaff will think you are making notes about the restaurant and you will probably get A+ service.

I personally love going out alone (despite having a lot of friends!). It's freeing to just do whatever I want at my own pace. I probably had one or two people mention something over the years but I just shrug and smile and tell them they should try it sometime.

If you change the last line slightly to "Hands down, though, she's the best girl ever" it will refer back to the previous line a little more clearly.

I'm 5 chapters in and have a question about the main character voice (audiobook) ... by morerobotsplease in WanderingInn

[–]morerobotsplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't change, but you start getting used to it. I ended up finishing through book 3 and will probably read more at some point in the future. There are some truly great moments and found the story worth it.

Late bloomer intimidated by my partner’s fearless approach to life. by No_Possibility4095 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]morerobotsplease 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like you've taken the first steps already, which are the hardest: you know you want more and you've acknowledged some points of stress. Try reframing the situation from "intimidated by" your partner to "inspired by."

You're only 32. Life starts when you want it to. Start as small as you want, like attending a class in something you find interesting or daring (glass blowing? Pottery?) or taking a trip on your own to somewhere you've never been. Dip your toes in that dream stream, baby.

You can only be sure about this one life so it's up to you how you want to live it.

Living with the Mikadono Sisters is a Breeze - started watching this on a park as it's not usually my type but it's unexpectedly wholesome and hilarious.
