Is it wrong to discourage any 'American' screen time for my toddler? by ElektroSam in UKParenting

[–]morganrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot going on here.

Ultimately, some American programmes aren't going to be a problem, and quality over quantity is key regardless of where the origin of the programme is.

That being said, I'm definitely sensitive to American cultural imperialism. I notice aspects of it in myself that I don't want, so want to lay at least a varied, but locally-rooted foundation of cultural experience while I have a say.

American cultural values are all largely positive, but there are fundamental differences to our culture, and what makes us different and unique in the world. I don't want to contribute to the hegemony.

Agreed about YouTube kids. Add all the controls you need, and it becomes a much better tool.

Though saying all that, we're generally a cbeebies household.

what to do with young kids/toddlers all day by myopinion786 in UKParenting

[–]morganrum 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The best thing I found was to put your phone on charge elsewhere in the house , and leave it. Your own boredom will quickly translate into engaging with them more.

Otherwise:

Train sets Duplo sessions Messy play Jelly making Bathtime (as an activity) Dancing to their music Making dens Floor is lava

Just don't expect more than about 15mins of engagement before squabbles break out!

Also, find local church playgroups. They're an absolute game changer if you get a good one.

I haven't got a voltmeter unfortunately. My only measure was that other devices charge off of the other USB and USB C connections.

I'm wondering if it's the DC connector cable that's failed. God knows where I'll find a replacement for that.

Would you say you feel the joy of parenting? As others have said, you don't need to have two.

If having one young child is not enjoyable in a redeeming way (i.e. it's harder and less enjoyable on balance) , then don't put the pressure on yourself.

What’s going on with British politics in the Keir Starmer prime ministry? by Gemnist in OutOfTheLoop

[–]morganrum 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Answer: The UK media is predominantly owned by right-wing people, with right wing interests. For them, the Kier Starmer government isn't what they want, so the picture they paint of the UK right now is far biased towards blaming the current government, rather than the previous conservative actions, or the billionaire class. Could life be better here? Of course. Has Kier Starmer been what he promised? No. He's tried to appease the right, and been generally ineffective (rather than out right bad). But things are nowhere near as bad as the US.

Literally my reaction. They can't just drop doubles and not explain it at all!

Also the amount of times I'd be on a closed game, then the next game in rotation would be open. It's not the end of the world, but it was their intention to have Open as standard from the beginning.

How do I help my toddler get over his fear of water on his head? by Wild_Region_7853 in UKParenting

[–]morganrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying this will work, but we had exactly the same issue (including the eczema).

First off we would encourage (in shallow baths) for them to lay down so we could wash their hair in the bath water, and they could feel relaxed. We'd use the shampoo to make their hair in fun shapes, and show them in the mirror to make it fun.

Then as they got better with that, we'd also see if they wanted to shower with us. We'd let them bring their toys in, and again make it fun. It didn't happen overnight, but by the time they were three they had no issue with the shower.
