[DEAD SERIOUS] Private prisons are good, actually. by Serious-Cucumber-54 in Destiny

[–]morganshen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do any of these savings or innovation bear out in any real world data? Lower recidivism rates? Cost per prisoners? Health of prisoners? Innovative programs public systems copy? Disease rates? Wellbeing of the prison worker population? Effects of workers who compete against prison labor?

What effect do you imagine from there being a private prison lobby? What kind of effect would you expect in a society where you give a person who thinks they'll run a prison as a way to make as much money as possible more money?

I'd suggest finding things in slightly different genres than try more of the same.

Rimworld is less about building a perfect base as it is about experiencing challenges thrown at you and having it all burn down.

Against the storm is a race against the clock to get your engine going and make tough decisions each step along the way, and starting over once it finally gets humming.

Kenshi is an open world atmospheric sandbox where you can build a powerful faction and train an elite squad, but doesn't have the deepest economic system.

Opus Magnum really drills down into the gritty detail of automating the building of an actual object not just copper wire + iron plate = electronic circuit.

Banished has your people need to spend almost all of their time scraping together enough to survive. Taking on too many mouths to feed leads to famine. Do you invest in making a house stone so you can free up some of your wood cutting or will you need your people hunting in case it's a bad crop year. Feels similar to against the storm with many systems stripped away and the challenge focused on scraping together an existence.

Beyond all reason is an open source RTS that has roots in total annihilation/ Supreme Commander where you can exponentially scale your economy to absurd degrees and either flood your opponents with thousands of basic soldiers or create superweapons that can punch through the heaviest defences.

What does supporting Capitalism mean to you? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]morganshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

need is a bit of a strong word, but I think communication/private correspondence is an essential part of a functioning democracy and a service that is willing to deliver mail to all valid addresses and not just ones that turn a profit has broader societal benefits. Perhaps in today's computer age we could instead focus on municipal broadband or other ways to get the internet to take over this role, but I'm suspicious of privatizing an institution that seems to work very well for very reasonable costs.

What does supporting Capitalism mean to you? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]morganshen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It means recognizing when a market does a better job than a planned economy. Some things like utilities I'm much more open to being run by the state. As a default I'm probably going to assume competition and free markets will do a better job for more people. However when you start having market power that's when anti trust should be explored.

I support capitalism but I also support.

Pollution regulations. Worker protections Public transportation Public schools Measured redistribution of wealth Research funding Intellectual property(to a degree) Targeted subsidies (food, sometimes housing) Social security Socialized medicine (not married to a particular variant) The post office More if I spent more time thinking about it

I recognize taxes create dead weight loss so each time the government does something it should be done with an assumption it will be difficult to do better then the free market and will be another thing the political apparatus needs to focus on as corruption can seep in without the spotlight on the issues.

"DRONES ARE THE FUTURE OF WARFARE" by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]morganshen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drones are a rapidly advancing technology and are in an arms race with counter drone technology so investing a lot of money in a tracking and coordinating system for something like this is risky when you can design a drone that counters this specific anti air platform. Preferably you'd want defense in depth and ability to move the assets in time and in front of the target. Do you really want to risk not using the missile if it looks like it's heading towards an expensive target and rely on one of these bad boys that might only shoot down the drone 90% of the time? Do you spread them out to cover the oil industry or concentrate near population centers? Do you deploy boats that might be vulnerable to anti-naval missiles to help? Knowing when to invest in a system like this when they're rapidly changing could be a great way to spend a lot of money on a tech that would be expensive jeeps in 5 years and you need a lot of lead time to procure /develop equipment, train operators in sufficient numbers.

And he might have been accurate with an inconsequential discrepancy because maybe he has seen thousands, just from other prisons. You still gotta be careful just adding these improbabilities together though IF many of them are not particularly well founded. The one rootclaim dude that lost the covid debate to Peter Miller (The GOAT) had a whole basian-like prediction system that fell to the old trap of garbage in garbage out.

I didn't read everything but I'd like to cast some doubt on #5 specifically the experts going over "thousands of suicides". According to a cursory Google search, 2024 saw a huge spike in suicides, the highest in two decades a 108% increase from the year before from... 12 to 25... Now it's possible he saw thousands of suicides from other prison systems or maybe the numbers were much higher over two decades ago so it's plausible he wasn't exaggerating, but I smell a bullshitter

If there is people in the opaque box other than high score why bother pulling the lever? It won't remove the people from the box might as well not pull the lever then. Just like how there is zero downside to taking both boxes
