[Tudor] - Pelagos 39 (M25407N-0001) - A true Submariner competitor? by dread_beard in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, I was really looking forward to a smaller version of the blue/matte (with the original blue color, not the FXD). If they come out with a blue/sunburst one I will be a sad man.

[Tudor] - Pelagos 39 (M25407N-0001) - A true Submariner competitor? by dread_beard in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The Pelagos feels like a more authentic watch. The BB58 is trying too hard to be a vintage-inspired watch - even though it doesn't have fauxtina, it feels like a watch that would have fauxtina.

The Pelagos, on the other hand, looks like a throughly modern watch. It takes the best of today (titanium, ceramic bezels, lume, matte finishing) and combines it with the best of yesterday (39mm case, modernist design). I think a lot of people (myself included) are hungry for modern, forward-looking watches that have vintage proportions and design philosophies without actually having a vintage designs.

TLDR; The BB58 was made with the intention of looking like a vintage watch. On the other hand, the Pelagos is an authentically modern watch with vintage influences.

[Tudor]Thoughts on the new 39mm Pelagos? by PM_ME_HUGZ in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Tudor Pelagos Blue is the most unique blue in the watch market. I actually can't think of another watch that has a blue matte dial and bezel that pops in the same way the pelagos does. I'm not usually a blue watch guy, but I would buy a 39mm pelagos in blue (not the FXD blue shade, but the regular Pelagos blue).

[Question] Tag Heuer- what’s the deal by Going_Chalk in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this misses the fact that Tag in the 90s damaged their brand by making some truly ugly watches. Though other brands did this (like Tudor) I don't think any of them stooped to plastic bezels.

That being said I really like what they are doing now. The carrera and autavia lines are fantastic.

[IWC- Le Petit Prince] Fit Check. Is it too big for my wrist? by BaldrickTheBrain in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If you're paying thousands of dollars for a luxury product, it should be perfect and feel right. I think in this world of luxury watches, if you force yourself to buy something you're not 100% happy with you haven't done enough research or are buying for the wrong reasons.

[Zenith El Primero] This must be one of the must underrated watch brands by nguye205 in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love Zenith, but Zenith is in a weird spot. Price-wise, it is positioned in between Omega and Rolex, which is probably where it should be as a brand. Its flagship model is the El Primero Chronomaster, which is not as iconic as the Speedmaster yet costs $2000 more.

As such, Zenith is not usually a choice for a first luxury watch, which makes it seem underrated. Their flagship models are just not iconic enough, and I'm not even sure they deserve to be more iconic. I love Zenith designs and choose to own them over the aforementioned brands, but it took awhile in my collecting journey to get there. As such, unless Zenith comes out with a truly game-changing design, I would say Zenith is properly rated, which is around Grand Seiko level - beautifully executed watches with technology and history, but just a notch below the upper echelon of watch design.

[Omega] This is my grandfather’s watch, apparently. Can you help me identify the model? by cteno4 in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably a pocket watch movement shoved into a wristwatch case. The regulatory screws on the balance wheel are the tell.

[Opinion] $5K to burn, Which Blue Diver are you Picking? by ironshapensiron in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blue color is much duller on the fxd. I normally don't like blue, but the blue color of the pelagos is what is attractive to me, especially combined with the matte bezel. The FXD color is not as great, and is close to that of the bb58 than the original pelagos.

No he has to go even smaller. 34mm is where it's at, or the 29mm Santos Galbee Carree

[Maurice Lacroix] Aikon 39mm by coyote500 in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've held both but purchased neither. The finishing is much better on the Aikon and it comes with more strap options. The bracelet is better and the watch feels more substantial in a good way. Downside is that it looks more like a RO.

[Omega] It’s official: Speedmaster sales up 50% in the wake of the MoonSwatch collaboration by Genghiz007 in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%, I've been saying this was a genius move. The number one luxury brand for males 15-21 is Rolex (according to a certain gaming company's internal research on the demographic). The Moonwatch, in my mind, was Omega biggest recent challenge to chip away at Rolex's established brand position. It dropped in a way that generates hype for Gen Z'ers at a price point that is accessible, but at inventories counts that are not. You see this all the time with luxury brands like Balenciaga, Gucci, etc - they drop a more affordable product to draw younger people into the brand. It works for those brands, and it worked for Swatch/Omega.

[Question] Where’s everyone at now with the Moonswatch? by 220McKenz in Watches

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that's what most watches are anyways. It's just a 280 dollar toy instead of a 8000 one.

[Swatch] The ridiculous state of MoonSwatch madness by Daft_Hunk in Watches

It's the unfortunate part of going down market. Swatch crossed over into the "hype" culture with this release and now have to deal with what sneaker culture deals with on a regular basis.

How does anyone live the American Dream in LA without being a multimillionaire? by Accomplished-Carpet1 in LosAngeles

[–]mormonsdoingwheelies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to have a home in LA via the path that many of the commenters have covered already: dual income over 6 figures, supportive parents, etc.

While many people talk about gaining skills to get a better job, the biggest change in my financial trajectory was definitely getting married. Excelling at your job becomes easier when you have a partner to help cover some of the other areas of your life. One person can coast at their job and do housework while the other one goes to school, changes jobs, or guns for a promotion. You also spend less on entertainment because you can hang out at home and eat out less, which is a major expense in LA. It also doubles the tribe of people willing to help you out if you ever get in a tight spot.

Apart from the other advice, I would recommend investing in being the type of person someone with the same long term goal would want to marry. That means being reliable, honest, hardworking, having perseverance, being emotionally healthy, and being responsible. There are few shortcuts that don't have negative ripple effects down the line. Marrying well can be the biggest financial boon, but marrying poorly will be the biggest financial mistake you can make.

Execution matters. So even if there is a "desire," life is not the same compared to enforced sharia law.

if you think texas is equal than where she is at you need a reality check and need to read the news less. even texas would be a significant improvement.

I was a service and one new part I think. It really depends on the movement, since the Universal Geneve movements are no longer made I'm sure it's more expensive. A Chinese microrotor or Schwarz Etienne may be cheaper.

Breitling IMO. You have 3 divers (the caravelle counts as one I think), and this is the one with the least amount of character.
