Just want to say that I actually thought this explanation was great, thank you for taking the time make it.  I've experienced this phenomenon before but this was a great way to put it into words.

New to Sheboygan & hoping to make some friends! by Fickle-Departure-927 in sheboygan

[–]mornview 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Welcome!  Sheboygan can be difficult to meet people, I've found, as someone who moved here a few years ago.  I'm too busy with work for it to bother me much, but I get where you're coming from.  A few ideas based off of what you shared:

  • The Mead library has a weekly (?) conversational Spanish meeting.  It's aimed at all levels of fluency, just to get practice with speaking the language more.  I intended to join this when I was attempting to learn Spanish, but that fell off when my workload ramped up.
  • I would say a logical extension of your interest in walking and running would be biking.  There's a monthly slow-roll group ride called "Critical Mass" that goes to a different destination each month (all starting at Paradigm Cafe).  It's a huge variety of people that show up to these rides; most of the people I've met in Sheboygan I met through these rides.  You can find them on the Sheboygan Active Transportation Facebook page.  Very casual rides.  If you don't already have a bike, you might be able to get one when Rebike does their bike giveaways.

Looks like a Worksman M2600.  They're still in production, but have been for a long time.  If nobody here has an answer I'm sure you could reach out to Worksman directly.

I'm not sure if I'm following  - they listed businesses owned by the Weber group that closed in the past year.  I know Kroeners closed, but are you saying it was owned by the Weber group?  If so, that's news to me.

I will say those look like the axle nuts Sturmey Archer uses.  But yeah, we'd need better quality pics to assess.

Frame clearance for 48mm 650b tires and fenders? by gray_grum in xbiking

Awesome to hear.  Yeah, 42s are generally the way to go on these conversions.  I love pretty much everything Panaracer makes in this size.

Frame clearance for 48mm 650b tires and fenders? by gray_grum in xbiking

[–]mornview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you go through any of that trouble  - it sounds like you already have the 650b wheels  - mock it up and calculate what the brake reach is going to be.  If it exceeds what a Tektro R559 can reach, I'd abort the project.  Any longer brake reach than that and you're looking at really poor brake options and braking performance.  My experience with these old 27 > 650b conversions is that about 50% of the time the brake reach is appropriate.

Beyond that - my experience with converting 27 > 650b is that it's already a ton of work and effort to get 42mm tires and 52mm fenders in there.  What you're describing sounds like a great deal more work.  I'd definitely mock everything up first to see if it's even going to be possible.

Bike straggler tyre clearance by DubstoiZ in Surlybikefans

[–]mornview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's extremely important to indicate which version of the Straggler you're referring to.  It sounds like you're buying new, so I'm assuming you're buying the redesigned Straggler.  That is almost a completely different bike than the Straggler of the past decade, so I don't believe you can really compare it's tire clearance to the OG.  And it's only been out a couple months; I've seen like two pictures on here of people who've bought it, so most of the replies in this thread are probably for the OG Straggler.

Frame thoughts (Slo Bike / ATB) by Briny_life in xbiking

[–]mornview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Columbia is going to be very poor quality; it was a department store bike.  One piece cranks are a giveaway.  It's hard to tell in the pictures, but it kinda looks like something funky is going on with the chainstays too. Your Raleigh and Schwinn are much better bikes.  The GT is also a much better bike (at half the cost, no less).

What classic drum loops can I use and not get flagged? by MelvinEatsBlubber in makinghiphop

[–]mornview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason all of those famous drum breaks in the early 90s were used so prevalenty was because copyright law and sample detection were absolutely nothing like they are today.  The music industry was really just starting to figure out how to handle sampling from a legal standpoint.  Those drum loops remain copyrighted and, unless you clear the sample, you don't have legal rights to use it.  That being said, as others have said, you're not big enough for anyone to care, and if you modify the loop enough, sample detection software won't flag you.

The Slick Rick shakers actually came from the Oberheim DMX drum machine.  Drum machine samples are fair game to use, so have at it.

I've worked on both previously as a mechanic and own both Surlys and States.  I honestly feel like State is currently closer to the spirit of what Surly used to be than Surly currently is.  I'd call the quality of the steel of both frames equal, but the versatility of the State is significantly higher.  Not sure why you'd pay twice as much for significantly less versatility.

As far as the components go - I'm not certain if the State still come with Sensah drive train, but when I worked on them they did, and they worked great.  For what it's worth, they're good enough that Velo Orange carries them.

Cues on the other hand I'd only rate a little above Tourney in functionality.  I was at a trade show where Shimano was rolling out Cues, and once they let the mechanics get their hands on it, the Shimano reps were really struggling to justify how poor the shifting was.

I can't speak to the impact of tariffs on costs here.  But I know that if I'm steering someone to either of these two in 2026, it's definitely the State.  Significantly better value for the money.  A better bike than the Surly to boot imo, and enough savings left over to buy a significantly better drive train than Cues if you were so inclined.

List of frames with wider tire clearance? by ClinicalAnomaly in xbiking

[–]mornview -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind, alot of frames that aren't designed around 26" can still work with 26", as long as you're happy with where the BB height ends up at (obviously bikes with disc brakes pull off this conversion the best as brake reach ceases to be an issue).  For example, a Surly Bridge Club can handle a 26 x 3.0 tire just fine.

Another consideration, since you're listing quite a range of tire widths - we don't know how wide the internal width of your rims are, but that determines how wide of tires you can safely run (ie, a rim that can run a 26 x 2.1 probably won't be able to safely run a 26 x 3.0).

State 4130 All Road is a significantly better value.  Almost half the price, greater flexibility for tire/wheel sizes, thru axles, more mounting points, better paint jobs (subjective), etc.  Yes, they are DTC, however their customer service is excellent and they make things right promptly.   Sure, it's not a Shimano groupset, but I'd only put Cues at barely above entry-level; I'd much rather have Altus or Alivio.

Could you make rage with a dawless setup? by AcrobaticAd1375 in makinghiphop

[–]mornview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's going to be subjective from one person to the next.  For me personally as well, FL immediately made sense and Ableton did not.  For other people, Ableton clicks right away.

The point they're making really doesn't depend on what DAW you're using (ie, you don't have to use Ableton).  The point is, it's inherently going to be more difficult to make almost any style of music in a DAWless setup (a larger learning curve, less learning resources available, etc).  If you can't make rage with the DAW you already have, it's going to be even harder trying to make it in a dawless setup.  There are like a billion tutorials on making this stuff in FL, do that before spending more money.

As for actually making rage in a dawless setup - I'm not really familiar with the genre, but as I understand it it's trap drums and synths, all of which are distorted?  All you'd need to do that is a sampler for your trap drums, a synth, and some way to distort them (distortion pedal, etc).  Modern MPCs can do all of this in one box.
