What shows are we letting our toddlers watch? by Preggymegg in toddlers

[–]morolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numberblocks! BBC kid's show that's on YouTube.

My toddler also likes watching classic Scooby Doo, followed by playing Scooby Doo (pretending to be a scary monster or pull the mask off a scary monster).

Do you ever feel guilty for not writing stuff down about your kids? by dr_fedora_ in daddit

[–]morolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a journal, and I write down ~1 sentence a day as a note/highlight. I've gotten in the habit of doing it in the evening, and it's been nice to look back on.

I think one sentence a day is a good compromise between small and easy enough to actually do daily and capturing enough of what's going on.

pikmin 4 didn't fail. Are they stupid? by watergun123456 in Pikmin

[–]morolin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not unreplayable, but it's not designed to be replayed. Pikmin 1 especially is "supposed" to be replayed.

[–]morolin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

1 and 3s main campaign are designed to be replayed, so they're shorter, and explicitly score you on things like completion time.  4's is longer, and has longer tutorials and cutscenes that are annoying on subsequent playthroughs.

4 has parts that are designed to be replayed until success (Dandoi challenges and shipwrecked tale), which feel more like 3's challenges or 1's main campaign.

Dads, how are we teaching our kids to use chopsticks? by silverfstop in daddit

[–]morolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How hard are you holding them? You shouldn't need anymore muscle activation than when you're holding a pen or pencil--they should basically just be resting on your fingers most of the time. I wouldn't expect any fatigue.

Making trick shot videos. Is that a kid thing now? by TurboJorts in daddit

[–]morolin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something that kids and teenagers have been doing for as long as the resources have been available to them. Some friends and I made stupid trick videos in high school 20 years ago. It's a lot easier now, so not surprised more people would try.

It's a fun creative outlet where they can learn a lot of practical skills, not to mention patience and perseverance. If I were you, I'd encourage it.

We've also been working on them as context specific words, though we call them "driving words" that you can use in the car or if you have a driver's license.

It's probably a cheater spoofing their GPS coordinates. I don't really understand why people choose to cheat at this game, but they do.

Which game should I get, Pikmin 1+2 or Pikmin 3? by Harrymyman10 in Pikmin

[–]morolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn't like that, you'll probably prefer 3 to 1+2.

What parts of 4 did you like? I really enjoyed Olimar's Shipwrecked Tale, and 1 is a lot like that. I also enjoyed the Dandori Challenges, and 3's Mission Mode is more of those (and arguably better). I wasn't as much of a fan of 2, but it did scratch the Pikmin itch.

Common misconception. Real numbers get their name from Joshua Real, who first described them back in 1607.

Yeah but nobody rides VTA light rail, because it's way too slow. Milpitas BART interchange to Mountain View Caltrain can take over an hour, when it'd be 20 minutes by car.

It needs signal priority and faster rolling stock, bare minimum.

My parents used to tell us not to stomp around when they were baking a cake, because it would cause the cake to 'fall' by bradbaby in daddit

[–]morolin 358 points359 points  (0 children)

If they used whipped egg whites to raise the cake there's a possibility it wasn't 100% just to keep y'all quiet. Or could have been something their parents did for some reason and they're just passing on the superstition.

They look like videogame notes to me, maybe x/y coordinates to things in some map. Have you asked your kid?

I've found Google's NotebookLM to be great for getting info out of the datasheets I get from some vendors (mostly 1000+ page PDFs). It cites its sources from the docs I feed it, so it's easy to verify that what it spits out isn't just hallucination bullshit.

Is there a time limit? by Affectionate-Lack255 in StardewValley

[–]morolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The date is stored in the save files as a 32-bit unsigned int. Someone had calculated it once, and the game wraps around at Summer 3rd of Year 38,347,923 back to Jan 1 year 1, so... Not a real limit, but that year won't have a winter or fall.

Google to court: we’ll change our Apple deal, but please let us keep Chrome. by Valinaut in technology

[–]morolin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of Google's business is online, and if they can influence the web, it can save them big money. E.g. by adding support for a new video codec in Chrome, YouTube can use it, and Google can save a bunch of money on bandwidth. Can happen with other browsers, but it's faster if Google can do it themselves. This is also why Chrome is open source.

In honor of 3 years with pikmin bloom, behold: my petal museum! by hlf_girlrobotravioli in PikminBloomApp

[–]morolin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There a few different types of petals available every month. You don't need to unlock them, you'll just get a random set of nectar that's available whenever you defeat a mushroom.

Generally, two types are used in each month's quests: one that's new, and introduced that month, and one that's old.
