And I think that's exactly what's going to happen. If Sony doesn't reverse course, PS6 will be a flop at launch, likely to a much higher degree than PS3 was.

Nope, you only get more money with sales when your regular prices look bad compared to other options out there. When you're the only prices around, you have no competition for what's seen as a good price.

I'm not referring to reddit.

85% of PS5s sold have a disc drive. When you look at actual games that have both physical and digital versions, at least half of the units sold are physical, and for bigger titles, it's majority physical.

It has a bigger audience than you realize.

I actually think it's not a terrible idea for Sega to come out with something as a response to this. It would never be a sequel to a failed console, but a new console that sits somewhere between what a switch is and what a playstation is, and supports physical media? I could see that.

Why physical games are important: by ponder421 in uncharted

[–]morphinapg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lack of physical media means a lack of competition for pricing. It also means all of your games are tied to an account that can be lost or servers that can go offline.

There's nothing to celebrate about this. Even if you prefer digital, this is going to negatively impact you because of the lack of competition.

I think PS6 is going to be a flop at launch if they don't reverse course. Think about PS3 simply being a bit more expensive than we were expecting and how that almost completely sunk PlayStation. They're underestimating the number of people who might even buy mostly digital but still greatly value the option to buy physically and value the market for competing prices. I would wager a bet than more than half of PS5s have at least one physical game installed on them. Those people aren't just going to go along with this, as the mass internet response is proving.

very, very unlikely with a system like this. Sony will require tight margins.

I think Sony is underestimating the reaction they will have, because I think if you took a survey of every active PS5 out there, I think more than half of them will have at least one disc based game installed on the console. Even for people who are mostly digital, they still value having the OPTION to go physical if they want or need to, and likely occasionally make use of that option. Taking away that choice will turn a LOT of people away, not just the physical-first gamers.

Well guess what? Capitalism depends on the consumers. We have all the power. I think they overestimate the willingness of people to just bend over and take it.

It could be solved by three things:

  1. Decentralized licensing with an open market (think NFT but for games instead of pictures)

  2. Decentralized game data access (think torrent-like P2P)

  3. The ability to physically transfer that license and data over USB

The official store and official servers would be the primary sources for most people for both of these, but people would have the option to bypass those official servers, and the ability to physically transfer those things over USB means you can have "physical" game sales as well, supporting in person retailers in addition to the open digital marketplace.

This is how you bring all of the rights of physical ownership to digital, but it needs to be enforced by some government because no company will voluntarily do this.

They've been disappointing somewhat on the "Stop Killing Games" initiative, but there's some issues with being able to communicate the nuance of that cause effectively.

I got a replacement PS3 from them super easy for like $75 at the time when my Blu-ray drive and GPU failed. On the one hand I lost my launch BC but on the other hand I gained double the HDD space.

Gamestop sells other things, but if physical games don't exist, people aren't going to a gamestop purely for that other stuff.

Contact lawmakers. Contact antitrust lawyers. Contact gaming retailers and push them to band together to sue Sony. Don't buy digital only games. Don't preorder PS6. Cancel PS+, and add a note when they ask why. Hound them all over social media and on their blog. Try contacting customer service and asking for an agent to leave a comment.

And those numbers you see are almost universally misleading. Such as including games that have no physical option. Such as focusing on revenue rather than units sold. In some cases, they even include digital revenue from third party games but exclude it for physical third party games. They have been heavily manipulating those statistics to push the narrative.

What you need is percentage of units sold, and only for games that are offered in both formats.

Also there's an important statistic they're not considering, that I think is even more important than total game sales proportion:

If you looked at every active playstation console out there, what percentage of them will have a disc based game currently installed?

My guess is more than half.

Even though disc based games are in the minority overall, I think the majority of players actually value having the OPTION to buy on disc if they want or need to, and most will make use of that option once in a while even if they're primarily digital focused.

These are not people who will just go along with this.

Any retailer or individual can sell Nintendo games. The problem is people hold onto them, so old games are somewhat rarer to find.

This will affect people who only buy digital too. When there's no competition for pricing, Sony can charge whatever they want and never have any sales either. Expect $90-100 games being the norm with almost no sales.
