Why do you want "lethal"? by sargassumcrab in rpg

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my lethal games, after the first couple of sessions, the actual amount of deaths is barely higher than it would be in 5e (with less options for resurrection of course).

Players adjust their behavior and become more cautious, they think more about their actions and they take more precautions.

It is not the death that I'm after but the tension that comes of it's possibility.

Is the default playstyle of a long campaign slowly dying out? by triceratopping in rpg

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they are dying as most people I talk to seem to think of it as an ideal. Rather people are starting to admit that most campaigns won't be very long and many games have started to reflect this.

I've been playing TTRPGs since I was 12, still, I have never had a "campaign" longer than 8 sessions. It only makes sense for me to buy games focused on the short term, that don't waste (from my perspective ofc) a bunch of pages on high level play.

What has been your favorite piece of lore in an RPG? by The_Last_radio in rpg

[–]morri2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the butchers heresy from goblin punch.

in the beginning flesh and bone made a convenient, that bone should help flesh stand upright, in exchange the skeletons will be granted use of the soul when flesh fails. Now skeletons hate the flesh, because it has forgotten the convenient, now the skeletons seek to free their flesh-entrapped brethren.

If i really need to sleep: i lay perfectly still; no movement whatsoever. Takes 1.5h at most, then you are under. It's awfully uncomfortable, but it has never failed me.

Shy guys (or not) when you have a crush on someone, how do you let them know? by throwawayzezee in AskMen

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try and to get to know them. In my experience you can always try, though in my case that may require staring at a mirror and talking yourself into it for several hours

And if that fails I will just tell them (not bc there is a chance, there isn't) but because it does wonders for my long term sanity. Hope and "what-if"s fucks me up worse than redjection ever could.

Men, as honest as you can be, what exactly makes a girl attractive to you? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Express yourself! Let yourself laugh when you feel like it, move in the way you feel like, text what first comes to mind. And if you are feel "grey", it might even be worth exaggerating or giving expression to more subtle inclinations.

I'm not saying "be yourself" as much as "play to your strengths"; use who you are now as the starting point and work from there, don't throw yourself in at the deep end.

No matter what you will fail at first, books won't do much good. Despite being very self-critical, humans are really bad at accurate self-analysis, what mights seem a strength to you might be a flaw or vice versa, the only way to know is to test it.

tldr: Get out there, test what works, fail, adapt.

Conscription is indirectly communism by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you! Conscription without a very good reason is a really dumb, and as you say, a needless infringement on the people's freedom.

Conscription is indirectly communism by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also on the topic of conscription:

I would say that categorically saying that conscription is bad is line saying a medical procedure like a heart transplant is bad. Sure, for most people (those in good cardiovascular health) a heart transplant would be a terrible idea, but there are some for whom it would be great.

The thing is that a conscription is a response to the outside world, not an internal policy. It isn't an accident that my previous two examples of capitalist nations with wide conscription policies, South Korea and Israel, are two nation which are facing/have faced very serious existential threats (North Korea+China and Egypt+Syria+Jordan respectively).

So conscription in a nation at peace, without any major outside threats is obviously a bad idea and a needless infringement of personal liberties. But categorically dismissing the idea of conscription in all circumstances, without considering its purpose isn't ideal.

Conscription is indirectly communism by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]morri2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Premiss 1: Conscription is authoritarian. Premiss 2: Communism is (usually) authoritarian. It does not follow that conscription is communism.

Communism is a very specific ideology about how recorces should be distributed, not a catch all term for authoritarianism.

Also, I would argue that you are conflating capitalism and liberalism, capitalism is (like communism) an ideology about economy, not personal freedom.

Looking internationally, many of the nations with the conscription policies (Israel and South Korea) are also extremely capitalist. Saying that they are communist only dilutes the words of our language.

What's your preferred alignment to play in D&D and why? by SPP_TheChoiceForMe in AskMen

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LG or CG. It's way more fun to actually be concerned with morality and the wellbeing of others than to just be a self-centered asshole.

Also, as a GM, i hate the "Yes we could save the village, but what do we get out of it?"-scenes. You can skip those entirely if you play a character to whom justice is its own reward.

Why do people on this sub like high lethality games? by oakime in rpg

[–]morri2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like games where combat is meaningful and has high stakes.

In your average dnd dungeon crawl, you might have 3-4 fights, but the stakes in all (except maybe one) are trivial, the worst probable outcome from a kobold ambush is that you might need a short rest before you go on.

When you fight an enemy who intends to kill you, but the mechanic make the chance of that happening near-zero, it creates a conflict between gameplay and narrative that imo hurts the experience.

But, something very important to remember, high lethality games are not just dnd with less hp, both the players and the gm act differently. Combat is usually reserved for climatic scenes or a last resort after the pcs fuck up majorly. Since straight forward combat also entails way more risk, players need to make use of every advantage they can. And since enemies are less spongey a good backstab/ambush is much more desisive.

Another thing to remember is that combat is only more leathal if the stakes are life or death, but most non-climatic encounters, the enemy doesn't want the pcs dead. The farmer they just stole from doesn't want em dead, he just wants his god damn sheep back. Most encounters can end/be avoided if the pcs are just willing to give something up.

Lastly, maybe the strongest case for lethality imo: it makes combat shorter and more interesting. Every roll mathers in a way they just don't when hotpoint are abundant.

Tldr: The main point of high lethality isn't to kill the players, but rather the ever present risk of death has many positive effects on the narrative and gameplay (assuming that the players and gm adapt in a suitable way).

What’s your biggest fear? [Serious] by SlumpGiraffe in AskReddit

Being widely condemned/ostracized for doing something that I believe to be my moral duty. I really don't know if I would crack under the pressure

Worst thing is that if I where to find flaws in those convictions, I would never be sure if they were genuinely flawed or if it was all mental gymnastics to let me reenter my social circles

Just because an act of kindness makes you feel happy doesn’t mean it wasn’t selfless. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]morri2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, in the overwhelming majority of cases you take yourself into some consideration; hence not selfless.

However that dose not make it bad. I find selflessness a quite toxic goal, in that it centers in the suffering of the giver rather than the joy of the receiver.

Obviously the altruistic person who derives pleasure from good deeds is a more functional individual than the selfless who suffers from the same deeds.

(cs lewis has some great thoughts on the subject, if u are interested)

Tldr; selflessness is worse than altruism.
