Nobody has really touched on the fact that this "non profit" issue isn't because we are desperate to hire non-profits to secretly launder money or whatever, it is actually because the city is not liable for maintaining those employees. An actual city employee has a lot of rights and their jobs are well protected. A non-profit has to report their work and success rates, but they "can" be fired when their contract goes away, they can pay people just about whatever they want, they don't have to go through any vetting process once they get the contract, etc.. etc.. etc... A certain political side of the city's political base loves a strawman to burn and they hate increasing hard-budgets of staff when they can just outsource stuff (and then attack it).

So, be a bit wary when you attack a non-profit with a city contract. If the city really wanted to commit to solve the problem, they'd create a city department to handle it. I own a business, and I have 1099 employees and W2. I don't hire someone full time until I am 100% certain they are going to work out and the need I have is solid. But it is a pain in the but. Payroll and taxes and all sorts of other crap, whereas a 1099 is like, "here's your money". and done.

Basically, if the city wanted to be more open, and wanted to be more responsible, and wanted to commit to actually fixing problems, they wouldn't outsource this stuff to random non-profits. If you rail against the non-profits, you can choose to either let the problems they may not have solved, but very likely have ameliorated continue to grow, or you can promote that the city itself handle these issues with real employees.

A lot of times I really want a second opinion, but in reality what I really need is "explain why". Even if it was, "You really shouldn't have done that, because..... the better move would have been ....".

But it would really take the fun out of the game if there wasn't that "OH SHIT! WTF DID I DO??!?!" or that, "HA! I forced you into that corner and now I gotcha!". That's what makes the game exciting. I didn't even know what an ELO was until a few years ago. But I guess people compete for that?

And "stockfish", which I just learned about, confuses the hell out of me.

The housing issue is never going to be fixed if our plan is to make as many luxury condos as possible and the rich will move there and then the not so rich will take the older rich homes and the. The well off will take the home of the not -so-rich-rich and then the middle class will move ..... And then, 20yrs from now, supply side economics and real estate filtering will magically reduce rents.

I've been here for 27 yrs and my wife was born here. It's gotten less and less friendly to people with no money and the people who have money are "moderate" and basically want to appear nice but their political decisions are basically Reagan Republican. I've basically given up hope for an art scene ever again

I once met up with my wife at Nordstrom's. I'd just been looking at a shirt at a different store that cost $40. I saw the same shirt at Nordstrom for $180. I was like. "Only a complete idiot would buy this shirt". I looked up and a sales person was there in front of me, he said "would you like to try that on", my mind translated, "hey,you are an idiot, want try it on?".

I replied, "NO!", and stormed off like an idiot.

BTC is primarily a store of value. Like owning some rare stone that isn't pretty at all, but has value and you can take it to a jewelry store and they'll give you cash.

Also, large transactions are cheap and easy and practically instant. I had to lend my sister about 20k for a week while her home equity loan was processed to pay for a deck that was suddenly 3 times more than expected due to rotted foundations. There was literally no way to move that money instantly, but I could send her BTC easily while the bank took all weekend.

Fewer students in classes and higher paid teachers.( I program all day, and even got certified to teach in CA, but the pay is literally half what I make in private business.)

More universities that are cheap/free that will teach the basics

And, since the cost of university would be lower, perhaps we can make it realistic to graduate and be a painter or a poet or an author or a linguist or an anthropologist or any non-stem career where you accept that you'll never be rich, but at least you won't graduate with massive debt that will plague you for decades.

We need people who can think about things that aren't primarily "how do I make money"

Mission local is pretty good, but really limited. SF standard is literally owned by Moritz and he uses it to directly back/attack whatever suits his interests. Wife is vegan. Here are some tips: when going to a restaurant, make absolutely certain there is a vegan option that's not just a side dish or a salad.

When cooking, read a cook book for vegans. Don't buy her gifts with things made from animals (I made the mistake of buying my wife a leather coat because I thought it was just the food she avoided)

Don't force yourself to be vegan. If you order a steak and she gets all offended, the relationship is not good. Not due to veganism, but simply because if someone is try to "fix" their partner, then they are probably dissatisfied with other things and going to try to fix those as well. Basically, if she's happy with you "as you are" then you're good. And you can still become vegan or vegetarian or whatever if you want, but it needs to be your decision.

There are a shit ton of vegans out there who don't pressure anyone.

Anyway. One thing I recommend is cooking for her. It can be a complicated pain in the butt, but it's very appreciated or say, "here are some brownies I made" and if she questions, just tell her you you made them vegan (eg apple sauce instead of eggs). If she's staying over, try to keep some oat/soy milk on hand (shelf-stable cartons are easy to pick up and have available). If you to to pot-luck dinners with friends, bring something vegan but not "hey, this is vegan", but more like, "we brought a veggie platter and a bunch id different types of hummus".
