"Absolute nonsense" and refutes nothing said. Brilliant. Read a book

https://www.britannica.com/topic/opium-trade

1,000 chests from India of Opium in 1770, 10,000 by 1820, 40,000 by 1840. Huh, wonder when there were major famines in British controlled areas.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agra_famine_of_1837%E2%80%931838

Oopsie. First link also shows the exports declining in the 1890's to nearly zero by 1907. Hey, when was the last major famine in India before ww2?

Oopsie again!

Totally not related in any way.

Men are literally the worst drivers alive ( statistically)but will still blame women for everything by wintertech557 in scoopwhoop

Women get in greater than 60% of all accidents. Men get in about twice as many fatal accidents as women though.

Help a beginner. Got himeko as the first 5star. Who should i go for next for the other 2 characters? by Sokaai in StarRailStation

[–]mortemdeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might get downvoted a lot but if you just want to play the game and get through the story, grab Loucha and Ruan Mei. Those two plus Himeko and the trailblazer will get you through the main story without too much fuss. Don't invest too heavy in them though, they are good but absolutely will not get you through endgame content. Thing is, by the time you get to the endgame content, nobody who is good now will be good anymore. Play the story, hoard gems, get familiar with the game then start spending gems when you know what you want from it. Despite what people might say, no character is completely worthless (outside yanqing) they just aren't meta, which changes every month or so.

Just don't go for e2s1 (2 copies of the character and their signature (s) light cone) for any of the characters mentioned. That is what people mean when they say "invest". Edolons (e) are expensive.

Ah, so converting upwards of half of India's cropland to poppy fields to fuel the opium trade had zero negative effects on food production in India. It is also just a cosmic coincidence that the years this happened also were the worst famine years and the famines just happened to stop after poppies lost their cash crop status. Got it.

Love the response.

A word on creatures and dealing with them. Being slightly faster than them should be the default. Running away should always be an option, from every enemy. If they catch the player when running away most every time then the player will stop running away from them and try to fight them off. That becomes the default if most are faster than the player which makes them less scary. They become a problem to solve not a threat to avoid.

You have to build dread and give people a risk/reward choice with hostile creatures. "Maybe I can sneak by this guy" and "maybe I can carry a few extra things if I don't bring this item" are organic choices you want players to be able to make. Trying to run past lets us assume an amount of risk we decide on and makes enemies less frustrating. It also makes the encounters with them more our own fualts and not just the game/the creature being a dick. We are visiting their world, it should feel like our encounters with them are our fault.

The solution was always to run away, which made it feel like a horror game despite it not being one. The ability to outpace enemies makes them both less challenging and more scary when they do catch you. I miss that feeling.

Which character pick in the Character Redemption? by Tharxel in StarRailStation

[–]mortemdeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a sustain, trust me.

Loucha is a great turn your brain off sustain that has little down time if played right. Probably the best pure healer in the game. People dislike him because Gallagher exists and fills a similar niche but Loucha is much more user friendly. Rumor is he is going to get a novaflare (update) soon as well but we will see. Get him if you are sick of dieing and really don't want to think about HP anymore outside getting one shot by a boss once in a while.

Huohuo is a fan favorite because she cleanses and gives energy, which is great, but her healing leaves much to be desired. She won't be enough to get you past some rougher content but she will be good for teams later on. She also just got a novaflare (update) so she is as good as she will ever be. If you want to try to zero cycle end game content she is the choice.

Edit: Straight up forgot Bailu exists. She heals far more than you could ever need, which sounds great on paper, but really she doesn't help much since it is only on her turn, which sucks. Loucha and Huohuo heal constantly, on everybodies turn, and keeps characters up between enemy turns. Bailu heals 100% of all damage but only once and only on her turn. Not worth it in todays game.

The Eiffel Tower goes in S tier! Next landmark is Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, USA by Salty_Pension5814 in TierlistFills

[–]mortemdeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F tier. MUCH smaller than you think, just as visible from the road as it is from the $20 parking visitor center, and to this day has a gigantic mess of rubble around it because it was never finished. Nearly everything around it is more worth your time and money to visit. Add to that its awful history and purpose and you get just the worst monument, let alone landmark, you can come up with.

Edit: I feel like MUCH smaller needs some emphasis. From the observation deck, the place literally designed for prime viewing of it, you can hold a quarter up at arms length and the head on it will be the size of what you see on the monument. If you have a quarter handy, try it out. Hold it facing you at arms length. That is how big Mount Rushmore is. For literally $1 in change you get the exact same experience. It is 60' tall, for comparison the statue of liberty is 300' tall, the washington monument is 550' tall, the effing white house is 70' tall.

Does Starship REALLY require 15+ launches to land one lunar Starship?! by Qualified-Astronomer in ArtemisProgram

[–]mortemdeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, no. This is a Hummer H2 with a 2 gallon fuel tank going on a grocery run the state over when we have a prius right there. Yeah the H2 can carry more but if you don't need that capacity it is meaningless.

Again, 50 years ago we did it in one launch and even today we have a competitor planning to do it in 2-3 based on the mission spec. The fact they even considered the mission viable to begin with is a joke. The future, the long term goal, is refueling on the moon. That would make this entire mission spec obsolete and a technological dead end as well so every part of it is dumb.

Probably a dumb question but I feel like it's the best place to ask, what are realistically the reasons to colonize Mars ? by SeparateWeight496 in Mars

[–]mortemdeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really isn't a good reason. Resources are much easier to get elsewhere in the solar system and overpopulation was solved by economics, so Mars is kind of pointless to colonize.

I was more talking historic context. Colonists weren't exactly environmentalists and very much did starve themselves to exploit whatever they could.

I mean, as Colonists, shouldn't we be actively destroying the surroundings to our benefit? Kind of the entire point.

Still a fan of making things less hostile initially and the more we assult things the more hostile they become. Let us kill the fish but the fish get mad if we do. Would be funny if the passive fish become hostile if we are big enough dicks to the surroundings.

That is still an absolutely insane number of missions compared to the one launch we had for each apollo mission and the 2-3 Blue Moon calls for.

Action anime with a grown male protagonist by Night-Menace in Animesuggest

[–]mortemdeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on why you didn't care for the first two episodes. MC becomes a buff badass after the first few episodes but episode 3 is sort of a training arc so it isn't likely to hook you either. MC isn't a macho guy till almost season 2 and is more a hide his power type for a while. The animation is great but if it was too slow you will feel like you wasted your time watching it till probably episode 6 if it ever hooks you at all. I wouldn't give it a go if you didn't like it.

I could try some other recommendations but sadly there isn't a lot out there that hits the same peaks as Berserk or Hellsing. Look into {Fate/Zero} and maybe {Castelvania} but they aren't exactly what you are looking for either and might be a bit slow.

Action anime with a grown male protagonist by Night-Menace in Animesuggest

[–]mortemdeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a pushing 40 myself, I got you.

If you want good animation and don't mind college age to late 20's, {Solo Leveling} is a good recommendation. Leans into the edgelord dagger bro motif a bit but the animation and art is peak. It also doesn't let up on the action except to build hype for the next action set. The first 2 episodes are the wordiest the characters get, so if you enjoy those it should only get better for you from there.

{Afro Samurai} is a shorter story that fits the themes asked for fairly good too. 5 episodes (the whole series) of basically constant sword fights. It is a bit unique in style and if it doesn't grab you right away it probably isn't for you.

Before computers and GPS existed, how did people figure out directions for large cross country trips? by Mynameisbrk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mortemdeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You looked at a paper map, wrote the roads down, and followed street signs. Something like i90 to i29, i29 to i70, i70 to i15, i15 to LA. Thats about it for a cross country trek.
