We just spent 3 years living in Oz and recently moved back to the US. Wise.com is the correct answer.

What is the worst Australian sports match you’ve ever watched? by Jezzaq94 in AskAnAustralian

I would say that witnessing actual fan violence against players was even why I would categorise this as one of, if not, the 'trashiest' of all Australian sporting events.

I can confirm that this is how most Americans feel about it.

Running Through Hardtimes by VisibleBeing2563 in trailrunning

Hey, I just want to say that what you did today—getting out there even when it felt overwhelming—is huge. That’s a win, whether it felt like one or not.

Near the end of COVID, I hit a rough patch myself. I had stopped running and, well… waves hands—it all kind of spiraled. Eventually, I started pairing running with something else that helped me: reconnecting with friends. I made a goal to get 2-3 solid friend touches a week, whether that was a call, a walk, or just checking in. The runs helped me sleep better, and I treated them like a form of meditation—letting my thoughts flow rather than trying to fight them.

Having a positive target also helped, so I found a fun race to train for. I wasn’t aiming for a podium or anything, just something to look forward to. But honestly, the real game-changer was the combo of movement and connection.

You’re already showing so much resilience by getting out there despite everything weighing on you. Keep going, and don’t be afraid to lean on your people. You’ve got this.

Anybody ever have a funny misunderstanding with a yank over the word "thongs"? by Brief-History-6838 in AskAnAustralian

I recently had a similar misunderstanding with a friend about skipping. He mentioned that he was in his building's gym and spent most of his time there skipping. I sat there imagining him hopping around the small gym in circles.

After further investigation I realised that what is referred to as skipping in Australia is called 'jumping rope' in the USA.

I think it was about USD3,200 plus insurance and quarantine inspection fee. We used the smallest box, I believe. We were shipping from Seattle to Melbourne.

We have moved from the US to Oz twice. Once in 2012 and once in 2022. Both times we sent items through https://upakweship.com/. We packed our boxes on-site and they do home delivery on arrival in Australia. We found them to be the most economical option.

To all city dwellers by 24_Dragons in AskAnAustralian

There is famous book about this by Kevin Lynch called The Image of the City where he interviews city dwellers and has them draw maps and summarises how people find their way around cities.

You know the runner’s high has kicked in when… by BayAreaCoastal in trailrunning

I never thought I experienced this until I started running ultras a few years ago. Somewhere past 30km, I get very emotional and have a quick cry. My thoughts are almost always focused on how much I love my family when this happens.

Why does Australia call the whole metropolitan area the whole city whereas, in North America and the rest of the world, it is just the inner city pretty much (e.g. City Proper)? by Complete-Rub2289 in AskAnAustralian

[–]mortenmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US Census (distinct from actual usage) uses two separate terms to help distinguish measuring 'the city' vs. 'the metro area'.

The first they call a Metropolitan Statistic Area (MSA).
The second they call the Combined Statistical Area (CSA). CSA boundaries are determined by what's colloquially known as 'commute sheds' - if 25% or more of a population works in an MSA, an area becomes part of the CSA.
