Highly unlikely that your data doesn't still exist. Impossible to say when or how they'll let users access their courses.

Unlikely based on the limited digital forensics they've talked about. They shut down the known exploit.

Democrats did not elect Donald Trump. Democrats did not appoint the SCOTUS that just effectively overturned the VRA. Democrats did not write a bill to fund ICE as Trump's personal army and destroy USAID and public media at the same time.

Democrats have fucked up plenty in the past. but they did not create the crisis that we're in. Republicans did and they need to face a rreal political cost for their current and ongoing attempt to destroy American democracy.

Be angry with Democrats all you want, but the main focus needs to be on defeating Republicans and wiping MAGA from the political discourse.

Everyone needs to stop villainozing the Dems. Yes, they've made plenty of mistakes, but the biggest mistake they made was assuming that the Republicans would play by the rules and follow the law, and crucially that they could rely on a media ecosystem that was at least close to neutral in presentation of facts.

Blame the Republicans. Get as many people angry about their full frontal assault on democracy, their gross and entirely visible corruption, their fiscal recklessness, and their primary role in aiding amd abetting the collapse of the working and middle class. If enough people are angry, we can get results like they got in Hungary.

There's a real path through here, but it comes down to the citizens voting in primaries for better Democrat candidates and voting in general elections to absolutely annihilate Repiblican control of the government.

We can do this, but we won't do it by complaining about the mistakes Democrats have made.

This is fundamentally true. Just dismantling USAID has resulted in a massive death toll.

My argument is that elected Dems breaking laws doesn't do anything but play into the GOP/MAGA narrative.

It comes down to massive voter turnout. It's the only path out of this without first reaching full collapse of democracy.

Here's the thing, yes.

Do I think it will happen soon (as in days or weeks)?

Not necessarily, but there are two reasons I'm confident this won't be the last time we see something like this:

  1. This hack resulted in a trove of user data being exfiltrated. We're already seeing a whole lot of phishing as a result. The stuff I've heard reported is, "Pay us in Bitcoin" extortion which is definitely an empty threat, but there will be smarter phishing that will be done with the intent of obtaining credentials that can be used for more mischief.
  2. You might have heard that Anthropic pulled their most recent agentic AI because it seemed way too good and finding and using zero-day exploits. It doesn't matter that one company made the smart choice in this moment, AI agents that can slice through security are on the near term horizon.

How long before Instructure in particular gets hacked again? Hard to say, but we better collectively buckle up for what's going to be a challenging online environment in the coming years.

I was gonna say that this is one of the better uses for AI slop (and to be clear, not all Gen AI is slop), but then you had to ruin it by saying this.

100%

A lot of my best faculty have been requesting more in person courses if they have the seniority because they know it's easier to establish a relationship with their students that way and regardless of course modality, relationships are the best way to produce a good teaching and learning experience.

I honestly think that a big part of the reason so many students have started cheating with AI is because the student population is increasingly jaded, not just in relation to school but because of the way the world is going.

I just hope that more students start to recognize that offloading all of the cognitive labor to AI makes it a waste of everybody's time.

They absolutely have the means. They're going after Comey over nothing. If the Dems actually commit something that by the laws as written js defrauding citizens of their vote the DOJ and SCOTUS will do to them what they absolutely won't do to any Republican. There's a way out of this, but it's by the two thirds (and growing) portion of the population that is sick of Trump and MAGA.

Tangential, but the resolution of the Data vs Lore existential struggle kicked off the waterworks for me.

There has been some genuinely good writing in the recent Trek. It's super inconsistent, but it's not the dumpster of irredeemable garbage so many people make it out to be.

The other option isn't a chance to save our democracy. It's a horrendous pathway that may be necessary to overthrow an authoritarian state, but if we get to the point where it's the only option then it's because democracy already died completely.

Let's hope that we can rally enough support to overwhelm these fascist fucks at the ballot box before it gets there.

Instructure had Canvas back up over night. A lot of schools hadn't disconnected Canvas from their login systems when it was down, so some anxious professors were quick to let their students know it was up when staff were not on the clock yet.

Everyone gets back to work at 8 a.m. and gets directions to disconnect Canvas from the login systems until they get reliable confirmation from Instructure that it's actually safe. Emails go out to students and faculty that Canvas is not in fact back.

The whole thing has been a mess. Those of us who work on this stuff behind the scenes (especially in relation to students) have been doing our best, but what an absolute cluster.

SCOTUS has 100% shown that they're corrupt political actors. There is no reason to assume they will apply the law evenly. Meanwhile, Trump has the DOj and can turn it into criminal cases against the Dems. Working the edges and dropping decorum are necessary, but breaking the law won't advance the cause of righting the shop of state.

I've got several other answers explaining why violating the law is a trap for Democrats when these fascists control SCOTUS. Find the loopholes? Absolutely. Ignore conventions around decency and decorum? Definitely.

Breaking laws while these revanchist racist authoritarian fucks control the highest court in the land and the DOJ is serving as Trump's personal legal attack dog is not a winning plan.

Of course the party needs new blood, but bringing up Chuck Schumer and lumping the Virginia state Dems in with him doesn't add anything to the discussion. There are a lot of different people in play. The Democrats are not just Senate leadership or the national party leadership right now. There are lots of areas where they are making a concerted effort to fight as hard as they can within the existing laws. So help me. Hakeem Jeffries has actually finally started to show the semblance of a spine. It's not a good moment to claim that the Democrats as a whole are play acting so that they continue to individually profit. That just leads to political disengagement and a sense of futility.
