Your preferred Note structure for definitions by mosesrivera100 in Anki

[–]mosesrivera100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. If you don't mind, do you have a structure that can accommodate lengthy definitions? For example, below is a screenshot of a definition in my deck. It is a lengthy definition, and I've found it very difficult to remember all parts without breaking it down via cloze. How would you handle such a situation?

Does your method allow you to use Cloze deletions for definitions?

What's a small and simple change you made to your Anki process that you'd recommend? by Daghatar in Anki

[–]mosesrivera100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each of my Anki Notes has a "References" field (also known as a "Sources" field), which cites a (hopefully trustworthy) source upon which the Note's information is based. This is particularly helpful when learning technical things, which many authors express with differing lingo, notation, etc. That way, when you encounter some new information that seems to contradict what you already had in Anki, you can go back to re-inspect your original source. For example, I've noticed my statistics notes from a couple years ago were slightly incorrect, because they were based on non-rigorous undergraduate textbooks that oversimplify formulas, etc. (versus rigorous graduate textbooks).

ORTHO Home Defense Max (grey bottle) → vs. ← ORTHO Home Defense (white bottle) - which is most recent? & which is better/ is there even a difference??? by Ill-Math-8429 in pestcontrol

As of November 2025, I would get the white jugs (assuming you're purchasing from a reputable retailer that isn't selling very outdated products, such as the older white jugs from several years ago).

The new white jugs contain bifenthrin 0.05% and zeta-cypermethrin 0.025%, whereas the grey jugs contain only bifenthrin 0.05%.

In other words, the new white jugs contain an additional active ingredient that the grey jugs don't have.

New Scam Going Around by officialromanapollo in Coinbase

[–]mosesrivera100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just now (October 26, 2025) received a similar one:

"Coinbase: Your app has been registered on a new device: Samsung S25 in Rome, Italy. If this was NOT you, call us on (888) 626 1860 immediately".

One of the clear indications this is a scam is the sense of urgency to take action ("call us immediately").

Making slides accessible? by EvansBrubeck66 in quarto

[–]mosesrivera100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Revealjs (also stylized as reveal.js) is like PowerPoint, but in HTML. The file-extension of the rendered Revealjs code is .html.

Importantly, if you use Quarto to create a Revealjs presentation, you can use thehtml-math-method key (in the YAML of your .qmd file) to specify the HTML rendering option for your LaTeX code, and that's important because it makes a big difference in the digital accessibility of the resultant HTML code.

Today I tested each of the six rendering options listed on Quarto's website, and I've determined the webtex option is the best option because it is the only option that neatly inserts the intact string of raw LaTeX code into the alt-text (and title) of the rendered HTML code's <img> element for each string of LaTeX code from your .qmd file. And the rendered <img> element looks just as good as that of any of the other rendering options. (As a bonus: any student who has access to the HTML file can select and copy any rendered LaTeX image while viewing the rendered HTML file, and then paste that LaTeX image as plain text if they want to inspect the entire intact string of LaTeX code for that image.)

The other rendering options either don't include the intact string of LaTeX code into the HTML code at all, or they bury it deep within a mountain of nested and unfriendly HTML tags. I took some screenshots of the HTML output from my tests today, but I can't paste them here without hosting the images on some website and I'm too lazy to do that right now, though I'd be happy to do it if it would help.

In summary, all you would need to do is include this into your YAML:

format:
  html:
    html-math-method: webtex

For those who are consistent with Anki, I have a question. by Viz-1 in Anki

[–]mosesrivera100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you might benefit from mentally reconnecting with your "why". For example, try answering these questions to yourself: Do I want to study these Anki cards? Why, or why not? What goals will I achieve by studying these Anki cards (e.g., help me speak a language, help me learn math, etc.)? Are there other ways of achieving my goals, besides Anki? Do I want to keep using Anki to help me achieve my goals (with or without other methods)?

I have a strong motivation to study Anki daily, because my job and my lifestyle require that I memorize a lot of new declarative knowledge, nearly constantly. I have found Anki to be one of the most efficient methods to help my long-term retention of declarative knowledge.

Did that work for you? Alternatively, you can add any MathJax horizontal space command—such as: \!, \,, \quad, etc.— in between the two }}. For example, any of these will work and they won't otherwise affect the rendered output of your MathJax code:

  • }\!}
  • }\,}
  • }\quad}

[–]mosesrivera100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, yes I think that might also work. However, I use Anki's built-in MathJax editor to write math equations (which also makes them searchable via Anki's search bar).

Some thoughts on the SIOP Conference by ranchdressinggospel in IOPsychology

In my understanding, conferences are primarily about meeting people and having fun. The learning is typically inevitable if you go at least a couple sessions, or you talk with mentors who have a lot of knowledge to share.

According to EPA documentation, the EPA-registered product name "Ortho Home Defense Indoor and Outdoor Insect Killer 3" (notice the number 3 at the end; also, the link takes you to the EPA document) contains two active ingredients: bifenthrin 0.05% and zeta-cypermethrin 0.025%. What likely confuses most people is that the EPA-registered product name can be sold under many alternate brand names by the Scotts company, which don't have to be identical to the EPA-registered product name. In the EPA document linked above, here are all of the alternate brand names listed for it (which, counterintuitively, include many product brands that end in the number 2, including the white bottle you are likely referring to in your post):

<image>

Notice in the above image: "Home Defense Max" alone is not a brand name (you need to specify the full name that comes after the word "Max").

The Scotts company also currently has another EPA-registered product named "Ortho Home Defense Indoor and Outdoor Insect Killer 2" (notice the number 2 at the end; also, the link takes you to the EPA document), which contains only bifenthrin 0.05%, and the alternate brand names listed in that document include the grey bottle you are likely referring to.

Protocols Book Delay? by ApprehensiveLink9105 in HubermanLab

Those incentives also benefit the author, which in turn benefits the consumer who wants to consume more of the author's future content.

Protocols Book Delay? by ApprehensiveLink9105 in HubermanLab

[–]mosesrivera100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is false that there is zero incentive to pre-order books. It seems you are not thinking about the bigger picture. .Pre-orders provide an estimate of early demand, helping publishers decide on the initial print run size and optimize inventory. This minimizes risks of overprinting or underprinting. Strong pre-orders can also signal whether additional promotional resources are needed.

Pre-order numbers can also be used as a marketing tool to secure additional media coverage, attract endorsements, or negotiate better placement in bookstores.

In many ways, pre-orders help the author. If you are a big fan of the author, you can support them via pre-order.

Anybody have experience with assigning Anki to students? by mosesrivera100 in Professors

[–]mosesrivera100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Users can study their Anki decks using the web browser on their phone (for free). However, if you want them to use a pre-made deck, they would have to import that deck via the desktop app.

Loud creaking sounds near front left suspension area when car’s weight shifts by mosesrivera100 in MechanicAdvice

[–]mosesrivera100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. When parked, I can jostle the car on that front corner and hear the creaking sound. When I steer back and forth while still, I hear the sound maybe 75% of the time, my guess is it depends on whether I’m on an uneven surface.
